I can't say Mahmoud Abbas is a great light either, but he's Muslim.
Here is from National Geographic:
Both Israeli and Palestinian politicians claim the region of Israel and the Palestinian territories is the ancestral home of their people, and maintain that the other group was a late arrival. “We are the Canaanites,” asserted Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas last year. “This land is for its people…who were here 5,000 years ago.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, meanwhile, said recently that the ancestors of modern Palestinians “came from the Arabian peninsula to the Land of Israel thousands of years” after the Israelites.

Let's tackle Netanyahu first:
Some Muslim Palestinians - there are Christian Palestinians too - have ancestry traced to Mohammed, to the Kaleef who conquered Palestine, and so on. On at least one line of ancestry. But those arrivals did not replace the Palestinians who already were there, they just adjusted from Aramaic to Arabic.
Aramaic should ring a bell ... why is part of the Talmud written in Aramaic? Well, because that is a language spoken by Jews. The Jews who became Christians between Christ and Abu Bakr, between Christ and Omar, also spoke Aramaic.
Those who then became Muslims continued to do so at first, but after a century or so had mastered Arabic and so did the Christian Palestinians. That's why Palestinians speak Arabic. It seems, so do some Oriental Jews, or did to recently. This does not mean they came from the Arabic Peninsula.
Mamhoud Abbas in his turn forgets that there is at least as much Israelite as earlier Canaanite heritage in either split of the one Hebrew people of two thousand years ago (ok, there was anoother split back then, Jews and Samaritans - both areas and peoples did often become Christians). Among Muslims, it may be fashionable to imagine that it was Abu Bakr rather than Joshua who freed the land from Canaanite child sacrificing and perversion celebrating idolatry (obviously, Joshua was not a typical modern Jews from Tel Aviv).
The article has its own problem in thinking proven that all the 73 individuals are of Canaanite and not Abrahamic extraction. The earliest is carbon dated to 3500 BC. If this date were correct, this would be one and a half millennia before Abraham, who was born in 2015 BC. However, when he was c. 80, that is in c. 1935 BC, an event involved En Geddi, recorded in Genesis 14, and archaeology has shown reed mats outside En Geddi, clearly related to the evacuation of Genesis 14, of its temple treasures, carbon date to 3500 BC. So, 1935 BC carbon dates to 3500 BC.
I find it not proven that these were of pure Canaanean ancestry.
