One way is, abortions per 1000 live births.
Counted this way, Russia was a few years ago (2018 or 2019) fifth worst.
Another way is, abortions per women in fertile age (usually counted 15 to 49).
These stats* are down to and including 40 abortions per 1000 women fertile age, 2019 and 15–49 for others, but 2022 17–64 for Greenland:
Vietnam | 64.00 | 1,630,000 | Pakistan | 43.00 | 2,240,000
Madagascar | 60.00 | 376,000 | Kenya | 43.00 | 551,000
Guinea Bissau | 59.00 | 26,600 | Uganda | 43.00 | 418,000
Cuba | 55.00 | 147,000 | Samoa | 43.00 | 1,800
Cape Verde | 49.00 | 7,100 | Peru | 42.00 | 353,000
India | 48.00 | 16,600,000 | Liberia | 42.00 | 47,600
Trinidad and Tobago | 48.00 | 17,100 | Maldives | 42.00 | 4,700
Greenland | 48.00 | 870 | Nepal | 41.00 | 348,000
Cambodia | 45.00 | 195,000 | Gabon | 41.00 | 21,100
Sierra Leone | 45.00 | 82,600 | Mozambique | 40.00 | 277,000
Barbados | 45.00 | 3,000 |
Neither Russia nor the US are on top, but lots of poorer countries are.
United States | 14.40 | 930,160 | 2020 | 15–44
Russia | 13.10 | 553,500 | 2020 |
Yet another is, absolute number of abortions. Again, I'll not specially mark those that say 2019 and 15—49. Russia had no age specification and the year 2020. The same is true for Nigeria. For China it's 2021. Egypt as well as US count 15–44, US 2020 and Egypt 2015. Here I count down to 500 000 abortions in the year mentioned.
India | 48.00 | 16,600,000 | Egypt | 23.00 | 1,050,000
China | 28.00 | 9,700,000 | Mexico | 31.00 | 1,040,000
Pakistan | 43.00 | 2,240,000 | Philippines | 36.00 | 973,000
Nigeria | 33.00 | 2,000,000 | United States (12) | 14.40 | 930,160
Brazil | 32.00 | 1,830,000 | Ethiopia | 24.00 | 632,000
Indonesia | 25.00 | 1,770,000 | DR Congo | 33.00 | 593,000
Vietnam | 64.00 | 1,630,000 | Russia (15) | 13.10 | 553,500
Bangladesh | 35.00 | 1,580,000 | Kenya | 43.00 | 551,000 |
On this one, however, pre-Dobbs US and Russia do make it to fairly high positions. Ukraine was not high either in abortions per 1000 women or in overall number, giving fresh statistics now:
Ukraine | 6.00 | 64,893 | 2020 |
Has Russia been world leading in abortions? Yes. UNPD_World Abortion Policies_2007, 2004 for the federation and 2003 for US**
Russian Federation | Female 15-44 yr | Abortions per 1,000 women | 53.7
United States of America | Female 15-44 yr | Abortions per 1,000 women | 20.8 |
What Dobbs has meant is not yet on the statistics I have access to.
Either way, it seems that the hugest killer is the idea of "responsability" and keeping the poor without the children they "can't afford," so that they get no occasion to beg for their children. And if we look for a country, look for the one exporting them that idea. In many cases, it would be the UK.
Counted in abortions per 1000 live births, Romania was ahead of Russia (and obviously of Poland). Counted in absolute numbers and in abortions per 1000 women, it's not quite the same story.
Poland | 10.00 | 93,000 | 2019 | 15–49
Romania | 6.70 | 31,889 | 2020 |
Obviously this means that Romania has lots fewer children than Poland. While this is not the same evil as abortion, it is also not a good thing. It is partly due to Neo-Himerite Orthodox since the 1970's becoming accepting of Contraception. A lesser sin than abortion, but still mortal. And one which is driving down pension funds to bankrupcy, or devaluating what they will give the oldsters.
Take a look at this though:
Sweden | 17.00 | 37,300 | 2019 | 15–49
Austria | 1.30 | 1,800 | 2021 |
I think this latter statistic reveals a huge mental divide between Sweden and Austria. I am a Swede and I am born in Austria. I was raised in Austria during part of my late childhood. Returning to Sweden in 1980 was the beginning of a roller coaster of more and more bad will and misunderstandings. I am glad to be out of Sweden.

PS. UK had an even higher abortion rate than Sweden. 18.60 per 1000 women./HGL

In overall population, the US has abortions rarer than in Russia!
It seems the only first world country to be worse than UK is South Korea, counted in abortions per 1000 women, that being 21 for SC.
