On December 6 [1934], a messenger from the town's magistrate came to the Stams at 8:00 am and warned them that the Communists were approaching the city. At 9:30 am, they received a message that the Communists were within 4 miles (6 km) of the city.[8]: 67 After John confirmed this, the Stams prepared to leave. However, the Communists quickly overran the city, came to where the Stams were staying and broke open the gates to the compound. They demanded all the money the Stams had and it was handed over. The Communists then arrested John and took him to the city prison. They left Betty, baby Helen, the maid and the cook in the Stams' house.
One could argue, the war began, in the East, with the Communist rising in China.
In the West, one could actually exchange the rising of Sanjurjo, Mola and Franco for the earlier rising which Franco helped to put down in ... 1934. That at least was the pov of Henri de Fersan who wrote in Rivarol for their Summer issue.
1934 was still under the Pontificate of Pius XI.
And I'd say it went on up to 1990. Viet Nam war, Korean War, battles like the Spanish and Chinese civil wars, World War II partly inverting the general trend, as anticommunists there were antiwestern.
