Can a Continuous Miracle Be Possible? Why Would God Suspend His Laws for Matter Day after Day?

Can a Continuous Miracle Be Possible? Why Would God Suspend His Laws for Matter Day after Day? · Could All Scientists Get NATURAL LAW Wrong?

He doesn't. The laws that apply to matter is not how it receives causation, but how it performs causation.

Matter is always free to receive causation as to movement by created spirits, provided they are free to cause movement in that matter (I cannot scratch the neck of someone ten yards away, but that's because I have my causation as to movement tied to my body, and an angel or demon would normally not be allowed to scratch someone's neck).

God is always free to provide change of any kind in created anything, provided it is consistent with His goodness.

Here are three levels of causation and natural science only studies the last of them:

I would say there are three levels of causation.

1) God perfectly rules everything created, mind or matter.

2) Created minds rule matter.

a) angels have no body attached to them and move any material body they like (within God's permission or appointment)
b) human minds rule the own body within certain limits.

3) Matter moves matter.

Only the third type of causality is studied and described as "natural law". (I dispute that studies in psychology could be termed "natural law" and I definitely hold that it's anyway not studying the question at hand, mind having a power to move matter or that power being different for a human soul and an angel).

This being so, God is not suspending any laws when working a miracle. God is just interrupting the normal result which anyway in some part is a direct result of His will, rather than of causes that are described by natural law. This is the Thomistic position, C. S. Lewis got it a little wrong when thinking in terms of chains of causation reaching back to creation *.... precisely as Paley got it a lot wrong when thinking in terms of a watchmaker and the watch. St. Thomas considered God as both building the universe like an instrument and performing on it./HGL

* Apart from that and from belief in Evolution, his Miracles: a Preliminary Study is brilliant.
