Il me semble.

A Misconception About Civil Rights

It's about Christian songs, sung by a female busker, and an officer trying to make a difference for the worse.

The officer argued that she couldn't sing "outside of church grounds unless authorised by the church”.

The officer in question is actually enforcing sth totally different from modern laws about free speech.

Now, one could argue, she'd be enforcing what was the Medieval legislation. Well, during the Middle Ages there were no police officers. Cities and country-sides were policed by people doing a well ordered militia.

And during the Middle Ages, people would normally have been hearing Christian songs in Church a lot more than now, so, what the busker was trying to supply is a more recent need.

Kimberley Josephson Tried to Defend Mergers and Acquisitions

Assorted retorts from yahoo boards and elsewhere: Rothbart and Mises Have Some Things to Say on School, But Less So on Economics · New blog on the kid: Kimberley Josephson Tried to Defend Mergers and Acquisitions · Being Outspoken is a Virtue in a Writer

First, there is a thing I totally agree on:

Carl Menger once said that “Man himself is the beginning and the end of every economy” and Charlie Munger has asserted that “If you have a dumb incentive system, you get dumb outcomes.” I completely agree with both Menger and Munger and would like to add that if you have distorted incentives, you get distorted outcomes.

This agreement does not cover the title of the essay:

It’s Time to Stop the Prejudice against Mergers and Acquisitions
Saturday, January 27, 2024 | Kimberlee Josephson
https://fee.org/articles/it-s-time-to-stop-the-prejudice-against-mergers-and-acquisitions/

I'll quote her own summing up of this:

There is no justification for assuming from the outset that a merger or acquisition will be bad for consumers.

I take it that Kimberlee Josephson lives in the world of The Wind in the Willows. You know, where Toad of Toad Hall and the other animals can be consumers, without ever having to be producers. Or be associated with them. On the one hand, as C. S. Lewis stated, they have all the irresponsability of children, who never need to go to work. On the other hand, they have all the freedom of adults, who don't have to go to school or eat up a vegetable they do not like or wear a thing they don't appreciate the looks or feel of.

A man is usually enabled to consume by:

  • being a producer in association with sellers
  • being a seller in association with producers
  • being an employee of a seller or a producer or of the state
  • being an heir of a very rich version of any of the above, while he lived
  • receiving donations from any of above (for whatever service he does or is seen as doing by those giving)
  • being a dependent of any of above
  • being dependent on the state.

Which of the above do not need to take orders? Apart, obviously from "taking orders" on goods to deliver. Here is the list:

  • a producer in association with sellers
  • a seller in association with producers
  • an heir of a very rich man
  • one receiving donations from any of above (for whatever service he does or is seen as doing by those giving).

A very unusual case is obviously some very rich employees of the state known as kings and presidents. Another, somewhat less unusual, case is living "off grid" like anything between Robinson Crusoe and Bjorn Andreas Bull-Hansen. But the former can make sure they have no inconvenience as consumers, and the latter can produce their consumption in the nature where they get it from, so, neither of them is really concerned with this.

But we can all agree that a consumer who is enabled to consume by being a producer is overall freer than a consumer who is enabled to consume by being an employee, or even, God help them, a dependant on the State!

That's where mergers come in.

That's where acquisitions come in.

A bit more than two decades ago, I sent the now abdicated Queen of Denmark a letter complaining about Carlsberg, a major Danish beer company, enjoying the honorary title:

Leverandør til Det Kongelige Danske Hof*

The Carlsberg company certainly makes better beer than Pripps, and I have forgiven them a few years ago, but at the time, I was highly concerned about 1 factory of Pripps laid off and 100 workers with it. When a few years ago I figured it was time to forgive them, I considered that each of the 100 laid off workers had already either reached pension age or got another and decent job. None of them was any more incommodated by the layoff. I hope. So, back then, I recommended Her Majesty to make Faxe the Royal Court Purveyor° of beer instead.

However, there is a Swedish brewer that not only makes better beer than Pripps, but even than Carlsberg. When I complained about the first boys home at SSHL** I must add that none of the Spendrup siblings went there. They were some of my few good friends, and their concern is doing an excellent work of brewing beer. As my grandpa was a distiller at Vin & Sprit back in the day, and the trade union also covered brewers, I am obviously partial to the subject.

And I think that the executives and owners of Spendrups are freer than the former executives of Pripps, before they got bought up. Obviously, while Spendrups now are Swedes, their ancestors were Danes. What did you expect of good brewers? OK, if you live in Bree and are named Barliman Butterbur, or if you are a Belgian monastery, you might decently compete with the Danes. I thought Spendrups were a bit smaller than they were, they actually sell more than Carlsberg in Sweden these days. But they do have two microbreweries. I was not totally off.

If we go from Nordic beer to Central European wine, you may have heard of the "Austrian wine scandal" ... what you may not be aware of is, the offender was not one of the small vinyards, like the Heurigen around Vienna. The offender was one of the biggest or I think the single two biggest vinyard owners, and they were selling to German supermarkets.

So, my counterargument would go:

  • smaller companies allow more people to be producers
  • smaller companies are less likely to lay off the employees they have
  • smaller companies (like the Austrian Heurigen) are less likely to fall for a get-rich-quick scheme like the ... well, Austrian wine scandal.

If you think this problem only exists in alcohol, Benfluorex, sold in France as Médiator, and Talidomid, sold in Sweden as Neurosedyn, have contributed to malformed babies, with no genetic reasons for the malformation, they just disturbed the normal process of gestation. Neurosedyn has also contributed to still born babies. Sorry, I had actually misunderstood Médiator. It was not affecting gestation, as far as I understand, it affected health, and killed between 1 500 and 2 100 patients, according to the allegations. The reason for my misundestanding is, when I tried to tell a Frenchman about Neurosedyn, he immediately thought I was talking of Médiator.

It's ironic, as I might be developing a diabetes type two, that, when I try to self medicate alcohol before going to bed, and lots of coffee the rest of the time, both of them being diuretics, and therefore helping to pee out excessive blood sugar, or whatever it is that keeps me awake those nights when I need to pee at 2am, and can't get to sleep before 6am, a lady in the neighbourhood told me to get to a doctor. She was precise that a doctor would not necessarily prescribe insuline, there are medications for that. Now, guess what Médiator was? Well, a medication prescribed for weight loss and for diabetes type two. Some people have religious prejudices against alcohol, and religiously motivated over confidence in doctors, and those doctors would have been likely to prescribe me Médiator up to recently. Which is chemically speaking "second cousins" of amphetamine.°° And some doctors serving big pharma, and sharing one of those religions, may have an interest in stamping me as an alcoholic.

Companies the size of Servier and Astra (now merged into Astra Zeneca since 1999) can afford to either sue or otherwise silence whistleblowers. Just as they can give gilded edges to the incomes of state hired doctors. The point of Kimberlee Josephson was that a state could produce distorted incentives and get distorted outcomes. I agree in principle, though not on the application. The point is, very big companies can also give incentives and produce distorted outcomes. One obvious point in case is, big companies can force masses to consume mainly things that come from big companies. If most of the masses are employees of one big company or another, it means that these employees can be so paid that the big companies perpetuate themselves as a kind of manorial lords over the masses. They guy who makes cheap margarine or at best cheap butter needing perhaps to buy cheap bread, from another big company, because he cannot afford the bread from a baker. And the company that produces so much bread that bakeries go broke (already happened in Sweden, where small bakeries are much less common than in France) may be paying the employees so low wages that they can only afford butter or margarine from the other big company. And when low wages are no longer the bread and butter of big business, rationalisations, and layoffs become so. The guys who currently are not earning their money, but live off severance packages, unemployment funds, welfare and so on need to make their money last longer and can also be relied on to provide big business with lots of consumers for daily merchandise. Very big companies are like small or even medium sized, states. Coca Cola Company of Pennsylvania arguably has a budget exceeding the state budget of the smaller countries like Liechtenstein or Luxemburg.

Justice being taken away, then, what are kingdoms but great robberies? For what are robberies themselves, but little kingdoms? The band itself is made up of men; it is ruled by the authority of a prince, it is knit together by the pact of the confederacy; the booty is divided by the law agreed on. If, by the admittance of abandoned men, this evil increases to such a degree that it holds places, fixes abodes, takes possession of cities, and subdues peoples, it assumes the more plainly the name of a kingdom, because the reality is now manifestly conferred on it, not by the removal of covetousness, but by the addition of impunity. Indeed, that was an apt and true reply which was given to Alexander the Great by a pirate who had been seized. For when that king had asked the man what he meant by keeping hostile possession of the sea, he answered with bold pride, “What thou meanest by seizing the whole earth; but because I do it with a petty ship, I am called a robber, whilst thou who dost it with a great fleet art styled emperor.”

St. Augustine states that kingdoms without justice are mere robberies, and robberies are like small kingdoms; but large Empires are piracy writ large (5th C)
https://oll.libertyfund.org/quote/st-augustine-states-that-kingdoms-without-justice-are-mere-robberies-and-robberies-are-like-small-kingdoms-but-large-empires-are-piracy-writ-large-5th-c

This is also true of certain big companies. This fact or observation, or if you prefer opinion, doesn't mean I prefer Soviet style Socialism. Socialism just makes the state a very big company, instead of making it a fairly neutral overseer over companies big and small. And I am no fan of Big State either. It lives off big taxation, and big taxation lives off big companies rather than many small ones.

* While both a Leverandør til Det Kongelige Danske Hof and a Kongelig Hofleverandør send merchandise to the Danish court, the former is a larger business, with which the court has indirect relations. The latter is a smaller one with which it has direct ones.

° Not sure whether Royal Court Purveyor covers Leverandør til Det Kongelige Danske Hof or Kongelig Hofleverandør or both, just using it as a convenient well known approximate translation.

— Thus wiki.

The problem, unlike these stories of bullying, in one case rape, in one case a "game" which was basically physical assault, ending in hospital, both my bullies and my friends and my houseparents wanted one thing. Get me away from Jesus Christ. Get me to doubt Christianity and Christian morals. Get me to see religions, including "my own" (which in that case it would no longer have been) in a relativistic way, that should not interfere with our functioning in society.

On some level, the school had a connexion to a movement within the Lutheran state Church, the "Ungkyrkorörelsen" ... the Sigtuna Foundation and its Library were still very much more about that, and were keeping this up. Old teachers, on the school, like the assistant director, nicknamed "the Torch" or the teacher of Home Economics (a noble lady, who was basically told, when I absented from Lutheran Church, by some, that I was getting away from Christianity, it was some relief to her that I was "just" converting to Catholicism — she had been my sponsor at the baptism at age 15), such old teachers were partly still about that. Some others, also old, already weren't. The younger teachers mostly weren't (I'd venture that the music teacher was actively Lutheran).

The home parents weren't.

A certain widow of a freemason, and back then lover of another (she later married him, when this no longer interfered with the then abolished widow's pension), and a restaurant owner, were the house parents at Ängsbacken. I had been sent there by the social services, them paying, because I had been bullied in another school. At SSHL there was somewhat less bullying in the school yard, but it was more intense in the home, instead. Some of those who didn't bully me, who were in fact pretty good friends, were trying to make me "think critically" of Christianity. I'd now consider that as a "good cop / bad cop" routine.

I was on one level pushed into the role of permanent apologist for my Christian and on some basic levels very pro-Fascist views, as well as pro-Medieval, because everyone around me, with one exception, from another home, and who got accused of sexually abusing me (not the case), was attacking that.

On another level, I was pushed into the role of permanent self doubt, especially before the girls, and consequently sexual dissatisfaction and ... the solitary perversion. Back then. I was accused of worse perversions than that — by an older and much stronger boy who preferred people to answer "yes" with a moan. Not necessarily that he was homosexual, simply, he approved of "self knowledge" and "exploring one's homosexual side" and when I took such things like a personal insult, and tried to revenge myself, he would hit me very hard in the stomach. I have few doubts that he made a successful carreere as a psychiatrist or sth.

He also got personally angry, and felt personally insulted, when I defended Christianity. Even when Fascism was out of the discussion.

I do not think that Collège Stanislas equals this. But whether it does or not, it overtly does not stand for the same things my actual bullies did. And obviously, at Mediapart, they are if anything trying to stop any possible bullying that could be going on there, but they do stand for the things my bullies stood for.

As I said, they tried to make me ditch Christianity, those first two years. It didn't work out that way. I became a defender of Christianity on an intellectual level (trying to sway those guys on an emotional level would have been useless for me), and as a result needed to look up where my Christianity came from, historically. Evangelical Christianity was some third or fourth generation products indirectly of the Deformation.* Lutheranism was a more direct product of it. And Lutheranism and all other sources of Evangelicals, came from Catholicism. I either had to deem Christianity false — not on my to do list — or Catholicism (or possibly Orthodoxy) true. I took the latter course, but came to the Catholic Church already broken by the school./HGL

Why Not Just "Submit to the Magisterium" on CCC § 283?

Dr. Gavin Ashenden is making a really good point:

Gavin Ashenden and Larry Chapp discuss the state of Catholicism today

6:18 — 6:35
so I would say it took about seven or eight years for the fog to clear and when when it did clear and I realized that what I was trying to do which was effectively draw together five or six Anglican constituencies the absence of a magisteria made the whole process completely fatal

And again:

7:53 — 8:00
I think the stakes are really quite High uh and so returning to Catholicism is not a matter of personal preference or not a matter of choosing one Church which is better than the other uh it's a way of of being obedient to the will of Christ as he talks about it in John 17

So, on this view, the logical conclusion for me would be to:

  • consider John XXIII, Paul VI, John Paul I, John Paul II, Benedict XVI, Francis as Popes
  • precisely as Pius IX, Leo XIII, St. Pius X, Benedict XV, Pius XI and Pius XII
  • and to consider a persistent utterance of any of these as magisterial,
  • which would by now certainly include Catechism of the Catholic Church (three of the first list, since 1992)
  • and therefore also § 283 as true, however distasteful its content might be to me personally.

Let's be clear, the CCC, if the last three in the first list were (and for the last is) Popes, fulfils the conditions of the ordinary infallible magisterium.

While the Catechism of Pope St. Pius X was Young Earth Creationist or at least definitely compatible, it could be seen as having a back door to Day Age theory or Gap theory, but not to a mankind that's several tens of thousands or evn close to half a million years old or beyond, it was also a catechism which he imposed only on Italy. The Pope is the primas of Italy, precisely as the archbishop of Lyons is the primas of Gaul, the archbishop of Utrecht the primas of the Netherlands, so also the Pope himself is the primas of Italy.

The Catechism of Pope St. Pius X was endorsed by the saint in his quality of primas of Italy.

The "Catechism of the Catholic Church", as it is called, was imposed by "John Paul II, Benedict XV and" (so far) "Francis" as (supposedly) Popes of the Church universal.

In other words, if the "last three Popes" are really successors of St. Peter, then § 283 trumps the Young Earth Creationist passages in Catechism of St. Pius X.

Does it trump the Bible, though? A different question. I'll come back to it.

Now, let's suppose as a given of Roman Catholic doctrine that "the ordinary magisterium of several successive Popes cannot be heretical", logically two options exist. First, syllogism I:

  • The magisterium of several successive Popes cannot be heretical
  • (The magisterium of) John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis are (is the magisterium of) several successive Popes
  • The magisterium of John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis cannot be heretical
  • § 283 is (integral part of) the magisterium of John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis
  • § 283 cannot be heretical.

Or, syllogism II:

  • § 283 is the magisterium of John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis
  • § 283 is heretical
  • The magisterium of John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis is heretical
  • The magisterium of several successive Popes cannot be heretical
  • John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis are not several successive Popes.

In the light of this, Catholic doctrine allows two conclusions from "John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis" endorsing § 283.

  • § 283 is not heretical
    or:
  • John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis are not a series of Popes

Now, someone might say, the point of the papacy is there should be someone to submit to when the actual position of the Church, the actual truth of God would to some seem like a heresy.

Not totally wrong, but not necessarily right for most cases. The most submissions are not to something that seems like heresy, the most submissions are to things that seem already OK as dogma or at least as an optional doctrine that is OK. Then there are submissions from "I didn't think so myself, but I would not have called it heretical either" ... only a tiny and extreme case selection of submissions to the papacy are over "I thought that was total heresy, but now that the Pope says so" ... in most cases when someone thought something was total heresy, he was not going to be swayed by a Pope saying so either, in some cases, he didn't believe in papal infallibility (which was arguably already explicit in the acts of Nicaea II or even Ephesus) and in some cases, he continued in his heresy, ditching papal infallibility.

Döllinger may or may not have believed Papal infallibility prior to 1854. But he did believe the Immaculate Conception was total heresy. That's not a very typical belief in Catholic areas prior to 1854, and Döllinger was indeed from Bamberg, born in a Holy Roman Empire which had been religiously divided since 1648. He met with John Henry Newman while the latter was still an Anglican. He was a Catholic who upheld a kind of show before Protestants "no way, yes, there are some aberrations in popular devotions in that way, but no way this is becoming Catholic dogma and it certainly isn't now" .... or so I thought.

In fact, when I look it up, though Old Catholics do not believe the Immaculate Conception, the opposition of Döllinger was more against Ultramontanism as a politico-religious system. In Döllinger's works, on wikisource, I do not find any opposition against this dogma, prior to his excommunication or indeed any work of his after it. Here is wiki about the preambles to his schism:

He was vocal about his convictions, speaking among other places at a Catholic congress at Mechelen for a liberal solution to the problem of the relations of church and state. Pius IX ordered the assembly closed after four days of debate. In response to Döllinger and others, Pius IX issued the famous Syllabus Errorum in 1864, harshly criticizing liberalism and scientism.

This purports to be taken from:

Lias 1911, pp. 390–391.
Lias, John James (1911). "Döllinger, Johann Joseph Ignaz von". In Chisholm, Hugh (ed.). Encyclopædia Britannica. Vol. 8 (11th ed.). Cambridge University Press. pp. 390–392.

The point is, the typical application of the dogma is in fact not "I thought this was total heresy, but now that the Pope says so ..." and the typical outcome of thinking something total heresy and the Pope declaring it dogma, and I mean actual Popes, is, frankly, schism. Changing one's mind about a thing one considers total heresy just because the Pope says so, is not the normal reaction of the human mind. It doesn't become the normal reaction even when it is the human mind of a Catholic.

But given the Catholic dogma, and given that "John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis" to many seem to be Popes, isn't it disingenious to pick the second syllogism, Syllogism II, rather than the first of the two above? Isn't it a betrayal of Catholic policy, if not a direct logic contradiction of Catholic dogma?

In fact, the Döllinger / Syllabus conflict backs up my position that "John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis" are not Popes. The whole line from "John XXIII to Francis" have fallen on Döllinger's side, rather than the Pope's on the political side of the Syllabus. Ratzinger admitted that Dignitatis Humanae and the Syllabus are in contradiction, this means that he indirectly admitted he was on Döllinger's side, not the Pope's.

The part where the Syllabus condemns Scientism is where it would probably be pretty easy to see how it condemns, in advance, § 283. Here are a handful:

2. All action of God upon man and the world is to be denied. — Ibid. [=Allocution “Maxima quidem,” June 9, 1862.]

8. As human reason is placed on a level with religion itself, so theological must be treated in the same manner as philosophical sciences. — Allocution “Singulari quadam,” Dec. 9, 1854.

9. All the dogmas of the Christian religion are indiscriminately the object of natural science or philosophy, and human reason, enlightened solely in an historical way, is able, by its own natural strength and principles, to attain to the true science of even the most abstruse dogmas; provided only that such dogmas be proposed to reason itself as its object. — Letters to the Archbishop of Munich, “Gravissimas inter,” Dec. 11, 1862, and “Tuas libenter,” Dec. 21, 1863.

13. The method and principles by which the old scholastic doctors cultivated theology are no longer suitable to the demands of our times and to the progress of the sciences. — Ibid.

14. Philosophy is to be treated without taking any account of supernatural revelation. — Ibid.

Now, the form of the syllabus is that of a syllabus. A syllabus is a list. But the full title is not "a syllabus of truths" it is "a syllabus of errors" or The Syllabus of Errors (Latin makes no distinction between definite and indefinite forms of nouns or adjectives).

To include § 2 of the syllabus may seem a stretch to some. There are other parts where CCC definitely affirms that God does provide some action on man and the world, so, globally, CCC would definitely not be condemned by this point. However, the method behind accepting Heliocentrism has in several debates since 2001 been shown to hinge sooner or later on "there is no God who turns the universe around earth, therefore earth turning around its own axis is the only possible mechanism" or "there are no angels that turn planets, Sun and Moon in orbits around earth, specifically Tychonian ones, therefore the only possible mechanism is the one that hinges on gravity and intertia, the Newtonian definition of an orbit, which excludes Sun from being what orbits Earth" ... so, specifically § 283 is at the very least in a kind of syncretistic relation with § 2 of Syllabus Errorum.

No scholastic would have fallen for the arguments by which Heliocentrism and Deep Time and Man Evolving from Subhuman Species / Nonhuman Species (like Ardipithecus, if that's still on the agenda), is promoted as proven fact. The idea of proving them hinge heavily on denying the supernatural, which definitely sidesteps supernatural revelation. The § 283 explicitly puts the knowledge of scientists on par with Solomon's knowledge from God, in the revelation that Wisdom constitutes. The idea also involves getting at "the origin of man" or "the greatness of the universe" from a purely reasoned conclusion, at the expense of taking a look at what God's word actually says on the topics from the standpoint of God's omniscience and obviously experience of doing what He did. I think I have shown a contradiction, more or less direct between the orthodoxy Pius IX upheld against §§ 2, 8, 9, 13 and 14, and the supposed "orthodoxy" of § 283. Tell me if I missed one.

So, the question is, whether it's more apparent that "John XXIII, Benedict XVI and Francis" are a series of Popes, or more apparent that § 283 is heresy. This brings us to the Bible.

Now, it may be a surprise to some, the Catholic Church in fact professes to believe the Bible, to be the guardian of the Bible as divinely revealed. The Bible is not irrelevant. There are parts of the Bible that are obscure, as St. Peter said about the Epistles of St. Paul. This doesn't mean that all of the Bible is so obscure that the only way to know with reasonable certainty what it really means is to believe the Papal magisterium. If that were the case, what a bad luck for converts. As per their previous confession, they weren't believing the papal magisterium, and therefore they had no way of knowing that Matthew 16:16—19 or John 21:15—17 mean that Jesus made Peter His Vicar on Earth, promised to do so, before the Crucifixion, and actually did so after the Resurrection, on the third appearance.

It would be really hard on us, if the idea we had Scriptural proof that this was so, was an illusion, because we had so far no position from which to believe the Papal magisterium. And therefore no way to know this as the true meaning of those texts as it is the magisterial one. Or that Ephesians 2:8—10 proves (with texts in the Gospels, both Matthew 25 and Luke 16) that works of righteousness are indispensable for salvation, not as preceding initial justification, but as a necessary means of staying justified. And so on and so forth.

But this is not how the Church traditionally sees our reading of such texts. On the contrary, even the Vatican II Sect in Lumen Gentium teaches that access to Bible texts is one way in which non-Catholic Christian denominations contribute to Salvation. Please note, it never says in so many words that someone can ordinarily be saved in his death hour if remaining in them. The way they become means to Salvation is, for instance, preparing someone to become a Catholic. It says there is a plan of salvation which includes such and such, but doesn't say such and such can be saved while yet such and such rather than Catholics. § 15 which introduces the non-Catholic Christians doesn't even include the word "salvation" ...

It doesn't make much sense to:

  • on the one hand profess that "The Church recognizes that in many ways she is linked with those ... many who honor Sacred Scripture, taking it as a norm of belief and a pattern of life, and who show a sincere zeal," and
  • on the other hand pretend Sacred Scripture is so obscure that no non-Catholic can have any clue of what it means independently of first submitting to the Papal magisterium.

Unless the "sense" is supposed to be one of hypocritical tactics.

Because, if even non-Catholic Christians, by the fact of having the Bible text, even if they in fact make some mistakes that preclude them from salvation, are accessing salvific truth, that would definitely mean that a Catholic can have access to salvific truth simply by having the Bible text. By the magisterium of the ages, he is preserved from most or all of such mistakes. And that means, you'd have to argue very subtly or convincingly before getting me to acknowledge that Bible and Church fathers don't prove § 283 wrong.

Hence, yes, I'm proving from the Bible that Papal infallibility exists, and I am drawing the canon from infallible Popes, like St. Damasus or Paul III, no, the circle is not vicious, and yes, I am also proving from the Bible that § 283 is heresy. It follows that the men who have upheld § 283 were and are not Popes. There is however no explicit mention in the Bible of them being Popes, so, the Bible should be a sufficient standard from which to conclude that they aren't.
