In Sweden, it was not just about forbidding things, though ma forbidding or discouraging self abuse was maybe on the agenda too.

It was even about my ma allowing me things, like liking Hitler* when I was in that period (ended when I discovered Franco, age 15).

And it was about my ma teaching me things, outside the domain of the will, inside the domain of the intellect, like Young Earth Creationism.

If I wanted to study at home, if ma wanted to let me do so, Swedish CPS threatened to take me away from ma, because I was not integrating in the social interactions promoted by the school (which "just as a side effect" included bullying), so, I was taken away from ma for the school year, not the whole year.

I got some friends from the boarding school I went to. I have some friends on FB from there. But most, no, and Harry Potter, I could not read the series set in a boarding school. If you ask me, a boarding school with four houses has the houses Slytherin, Slytherin, Slytherin and Slytherin, at least as for the boys' homes. No, not quite true. I was actually bullied two years more at Slytherin**, before getting to be tolerated at Hufflepuff.
