Apartheid

In the 1980s Falwell said that sanctions against the apartheid regime of South Africa would result in what, he felt, would be a worse situation, such as a Soviet-backed revolution. He drew the ire of many when he called Nobel Peace Prize winner and Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu a phony "as far as representing the black people of South Africa".[42] He later apologized for that remark and claimed that he had misspoken.[43] He also urged his followers to buy up gold Krugerrands and push U.S. "reinvestment" in South Africa.[44]

Civil rights

On his evangelist program The Old-Time Gospel Hour in the mid 1960s, Falwell regularly featured segregationist politicians like Lester Maddox and George Wallace.[30] About Martin Luther King he said: "I do question the sincerity and nonviolent intentions of some civil rights leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Mr. James Farmer, and others, who are known to have left wing associations."[31]

In speaking of the Brown vs. Board of Education ruling, he said, in 1958:

If Chief Justice Warren and his associates had known God's word and had desired to do the Lord's will, I am quite confident that the 1954 decision would never had been made. The facilities should be separate. When God has drawn a line of distinction, we should not attempt to cross that line.[32]

In 1977, Falwell supported Anita Bryant's campaign, which was called by its proponents "Save Our Children", to overturn an ordinance in Dade County, Florida prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, and he supported a similar movement in California.[3]

Twenty-eight years later, in an appearance on MSNBC television, Falwell said he was not troubled by reports that the nominee for Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, John G. Roberts (whose appointment was confirmed by the U.S. Senate) had done volunteer legal work for homosexual rights activists on the case of Romer v. Evans. Falwell told MSNBC's Tucker Carlson that if he were a lawyer, he too would argue for civil rights for LGBT people. "I may not agree with the lifestyle, but that has nothing to do with the civil rights of that part of our constituency," Falwell said. When Carlson countered that conservatives "are always arguing against 'special rights' for gays," Falwell said that equal access to housing and employment are basic rights, not special rights. "Civil rights for all Americans, black, white, red, yellow, the rich, poor, young, old, gay, straight, et cetera, is not a liberal or conservative value. It's an American value that I would think that we pretty much all agree on."[33]

Ensuite l'anglophone:

Falwell set out in his Christian ministry as a Fundamentalist, having attended a conservative Bible college and following strict standards of ecclesiastical and personal separatism; he was thus known and respected in IFB circles, being praised in far-right publications such as The Sword of the Lord. Though he never officially stated his rejection of this movement, the evidence of his life from the late 1970s onwards indicates he moved toward a conservative Evangelical standpoint to the right of mainline Protestantism or "open" Evangelicalism but to the left of traditional, separatist Fundamentalism. It was reported that he had refused to attend parties at which alcohol was served early in his life, but relaxed this stricture as he was increasingly invited to major events through the contacts he developed in conservative politics and religion.

His foray into national politics appears to be a catalyst for this change; when he established the Moral Majority which joined "Bible Christians" (Independent and conservative Southern Baptists) in a political alliance with Charismatics, Roman Catholics, Jews, Mormons and others he rejected the level of separation preached by most movement Fundamentalists. Bob Jones University declared the Moral Majority organization "Satanic", holding that it was a step toward the apostate one-world church and government body as it would cross the line from a political alliance to a religious one between true Christians and the non-born-again, as forbidden by their interpretation of the Bible. David Cloud's Way of Life Literature also criticizes Falwell for associations with Catholics, Pentecostals and liberal Christians, tracing his alleged "apostasy" back to his role in the political Religious Right.

Though he never wavered in his belief in the inerrancy of the Bible (except for moderating its alleged view of racial differences, significance of baptism, and other concepts relative to his theology) and the doctrines conservative Christians widely see as essential to salvation, his rhetoric became generally more mellow, less militant and comparatively more inclusive from the 1980s onward. Cultural anthropologist Susan Friend Harding, in her extensive ethnographic study of Falwell, noted that he adapted his preaching to win a broader, less extremist audience as he grew famous. This manifested in several ways: among them were no longer condemning "worldly" lifestyle choices such as dancing, drinking wine, and attending movie theaters; softening rhetoric of apocalypse and God's vengeful wrath; and shifting from outright Biblical patriarchy to a complementarian view of appropriate gender roles. He further mainstreamed himself by aiming his strongest criticism at "secular humanists", pagans or various liberals in place of the racist, anti-Semitic or anti-Catholic rhetoric common among Southern Fundamentalist preachers but increasingly condemned as hate speech by the consensus of American society.[64]

Falwell has also said, "Labor unions should study and read the Bible instead of asking for more money. When people get right with God, they are better workers."[63]

Mark Shea tries to explain Indulgences to Protestants

Link:
What is the Story with Indulgences?
by Mark Shea 01/15/2016
http://www.ncregister.com/blog/mark-shea/what-is-the-story-with-indulgences/

Quote:
Most Catholics live and die blissfully unaware that the Church even offers indulgences anymore. (A Catholic friend to whom I mentioned I was writing this article said, "They went out with Vatican II, didn't they?") Practically no Catholic gives much thought to them.

Comment:
That is your "middle of the road US Vatican II accepting Catholic". It is not you "middle of the road Catholic". My Polish priest who received me told me of indulgences, and was satirical about Paul VI abolishing the non-plenary ones "perhaps the treasury of the Church is lessened, or sth?" - and he was obedient to John Paul II, accepting Vatican II, accepting New Liturgy. One Norway resident Spaniard or Latin American told me there was a plenary indulgence attached to the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.

Quote:
Catholic theology has an incorrigible knack for obscuring marvelous insights in confusing terminology. Thus, for instance, she speaks of "temporal punishment for sin" which sounds to Protestants as though Jesus didn't do enough and you still have to endure extra torture so you'll be fully "punished" in addition to the 80% or 90% of the punishment He took for you. In reality, "temporal punishment" is just Catholicese for what Protestants call "chastisement." That is, it is pain unto life such as Scripture refers to when it tells us God punishes all those he loves as his children. (Hebrews 12:5-6).

Comment:
In German "punishment" and "chastisement" are both Strafe, alternatively, chastisement can be Bestrafung. In Swedish they are both straff, alternatively chastisement can be bestraffning. Luther who spoke German cannot have mistaken "Zeitliche Sündenstrafe" for the punishment of Hell any more or less because it was involving Strafe, since chastisement is anyway Strafe. Even paying a fine involves that word in German. And especially, "zeitlich" should have tipped him off it didn't mean "eternal". Zeitlich means "temporal". Actually, the idea of chastisement, as now (on Mark Shea's words, at least) accepted by Evangelicals, was not extremely popular with Reformers, as far as I can see.

Quote:
What is "merit"? Well, it isn't "extra righteousness earned by particularly nice people who pitched in to help our well-meaning but inadequate Savior's effort at redemption" (which is what many people think "merit" means). Rather "merit" is an old-fashioned term whose modern equivalent (according to theologian Hans Urs Von Balthasar) is "fruitfulness." ... Christians, as all Protestants know, are graced to bear fruit by the work of Christ (John 15 and all that). We are commanded by God to bear grace to the world and to each other. For as C.S. Lewis observes, God "seems to do nothing of himself which he can possibly delegate to his creatures." We are thus to bear fruit by acting as agents of grace, doing the will of God and generally "wielding our little tridents."

Comment:
Fruitfulness of this kind was not extremely popular with Reformers either. OK, one more thing : they DID deny that difference of fruit/merit in this sense involves different degrees of bliss in Heaven. We do affirm it. CSL seems to have been here quoted from Letters to Malcolm, unless my memory fails me. And Letters of Malcolm is miles from Luther and a few arms lengths from the Catholics of Luther's time. It helped me become Catholic, nearly as much as Tolkien and Chesterton.

Quote:
An example: I, a man with a bad temper, get baptized, calling on the Lord to be saved. What does that make me? Usually it makes me a Christian man with a bad temper since the gift of new life is grace, not magic. Baptism is not an instant cure-all. It is a gate into the transforming grace of God which, with our cooperation, can eventually heal our brains, hearts and bones.

So then, I come home from baptism full of transforming grace and, finding you did not give me the chocolate Easter bunny I wanted, break your window in a rage. I repent. I am forgiven by God and you. All my guilt is taken away by the blood of Christ the instant I repent. But I still must pay for the window and I still, by grace, have to do something about my temper. Moreover, I am strapped for cash (since I have several broken window lawsuits pending which did not magically disappear when I was baptized). But (asking for God's help) I do what I can to pay you back. You (a Christian with the gift of mercy) forgive the remainder of the debt and even give me a little something so I can afford anger management counseling and legal fees.

Comment:
Let me highlight:

// so I can afford anger management counseling and legal fees. //

Some Protestants have said that Catholic Church (the one back then) was "buying and selling souls" by indulgences. False, of course. But the Vatican II Sect and at least some Trads seem to be way closer to that horrible state by simply cooperating with things like anger management counseling. Anger Management with Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson is a horrible film, say I only based on reading the idea.

Quote from wiki:
After a series of annoyances from the flight attendant and a sky marshal cause Dave, who repeatedly wanted a headset to watch an in-flight movie suggested by Buddy, to lose his temper, the sky marshal, who also mistakes Dave for a racist, tasers him, and Dave is arrested for assaulting the flight attendant, and sentenced to anger management therapy. The therapist happens to be Buddy. Buddy's unorthodox techniques cause Dave to lose his temper, and Buddy tells Dave he recognizes his problem as passive-aggressive anger. After Dave gets into a bar fight caused by another of Buddy's patients, Chuck, Dave is sent back to court and Buddy intervenes on his behalf, choosing to move in with Dave and shadow him in his life as part of more intensive therapy. Failure to comply will result in a year of jail time for Dave.

Comment:
I can relate to a black man mistaking someone for a racist*, but shouldn't he have taken one year of gaol instead**?

I was sentenced to 42 months, officially by court. I went out supposedly a free man 2000, after doing two thirds. Someone seems to have inofficially sentenced me to anger management therapy as well, and I am still being provoked after more than 210 months. Now read:

Quote within my essay:
In the words of a Lombard monk of Monte Cassino, the combination of civil war and Arab marauding were devastating southern Italy even as the shipment of Italian slaves had the opposite effect on the enemies of Christendom: "the places across the sea are bolstered by the male and female captivi of our race."

Quote from my own essay:
Is there an application for us, today? Well, if psychiatry is a place where your young ones may have to confront witches, both discrete ones in parts of personnel and stupid ones among fellow patients, and lots of other doctrinally aberrant people, the loss of Christendom may not be to "transmarina loca" but to something alien to Christendom being bolstered in our very midst - by the wrath of people having a hard time forgetting they were betrayed there by fellow Christians. Indeed, often enough by their family or parish, meaning only well as the phrase goes.

What was his visit to Sweden for ...

Bergoglio is "to travel to Sweden for joint Reformation commemoration".

What will he say?

Deplore that Laurentius Petri* when reforming the liturgy for ordination or even episcopal consecration made it clear that henceforth one was not "ordaining sacrificial priests" and therefore the Apostolic Succession vanished at his hands (no ordination he made after that statement, which is very official, I forgot which year, can have had a valid intention)?

But if so, why would he be welcomed by Swedish former State Church for such an occasion?

Or will he ignore that issue, like he did with the similarily non-extant Apostolic Succession for Anglicans, when he buried his friend Tony Palmer like a Catholic bishop is buried?

If so, he is spitting on the memory of the rival claimant to archbishopric of Uppsala, namely Laurentius Magni*. He was archbishop of Uppsala in exile.

He is spitting on the memory of martyrs too. Georg Ursinus was royal secretary. Zacharias Anthelius was mayor of Soedertelge. They became Catholics. They were killed as "traitors" for that sole act on order of the usurper Gustavus Adolphus (yes, of 30 Years War ill-fame**).

He is spitting on the anguish of those who conformed against their conscience to the very tyrannical reformation, because they would have been punished if confessing and hearing Mass with Heinrich Schacht S. J., the priest for whom Ursinus and Anthelius converted. Or his predecessors, who went to Poland with King Sigismund.

He is spitting on the valour of peasants who opposed the Reformation, and notably on that of Niels Dacke*** who was beheaded for trying to save churches from the pillaging of Gustaf Wasa.

He is spitting on the freedom of press, since the first printing press first belonged to Carthusians, who printed a manual about how to pray the Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary and THEN Gustaf Wasa took this away from them and gave it to the Petri brothers°.

He is to say the least, not extremely respectful to converts from Swedish Lutheranism to the Catholic Church. Unless one should say that what I converted to was in fact a counterfeit Catholic Church, though my priest was old enough to be validly ordained and certainly had the right intentions with sacraments, unlike the Petri brothers, unlike perhaps a few Novus Ordo priests as well.

And so, he is not very respectful to those who were in the Catholic Church still extant in full before 1962 or before 1950, who were keeping the faith when I came in to join them.

As I declared once when Bergoglio "canonised" Wojtyla, Bergoglio cannot be a Catholic, Bergoglio cannot be my Pope or any other Catholic's real Pope.

** The then Danish Scania hardly has a motive to like him better than Catholic Bavaria. My ancestors are from Christianstad, which was built a little away from the Væ which Gustavus Adolphus had ravaged, though that was obviously before the 30 Years War. Ursinus and Anthelius are obviously latinised surnames, we still have some in Sweden.

*** Yes, this peasant's name is not latinised at all!

° Laurentius Petri was the pseudo-archbishop, perhaps validly, but uncanonically consecrated, certainly not ordaining validly himself. His brother Olaus Petri (the Magni brothers also included an Olaus or Olof) was the preacher and Lutheran "theologian".

Aberration and Parallax

1) Does the First Diagram Makes Sense? · 2) Aberration and Parallax

If the stellatum, at one lightday away*, were moving annually same distance as the Sun, it would have an overall per se measurable parallax, since a triangle with a side 90 times smaller than the two other** sides is not too skinny to measure, but rather a triangle the kind of which, I suppose, is pretty often used by surveyors. So, one would be measuring a parallax of about 4° or sth like that (hasty oversight, 360° being full circle, divided by factor 90:1, equal 4°). So, if I am right***, stars are not annually moving the distance of the Sun.

Can a smaller movement than that be responsible for the aberration, supposing, as at least Sungenis does among Geocentrists° it is the kind of phenomenon that Heliocentrics since Bradley suppose it to be?

Aberration is held not to contain any information about the distance to the stars. I suppose therefore that the distance of stellar annual movement in relation to us, by Bouw and Sungenis as by Heliocentrics and as relevant to aberration, is taken to be the same as that of the Sun simply because it is a distance attributed (though not by Bouw and Sungenis) to Earth rather than to Sun and to Stars. The movement of one body needs to be self identical, the movement of two independent bodies can be of diverse size. Then the speed of light is calculated from that distance of Earth and angle of aberration.

In that case, another movement, like a larger and a smaller one, of the Sun and of the sphere of fixed stars is annually possible, but then adjustments must be made for speed of light, since it is calculated from angle of aberration.

However, speed of light is calculated by other methods too, which do not seem to totally agree, only very largely so.

So, is annual movement of Stars as large as that of the Sun, but then the stars by far further off than just one light day?

Or should stars be showing a parallax of 4° annually, which has been misread by astronomers, while surveyors manage to read it? After all, surveyors are cautious to have fixed landmarks, and astronomers like a view on the sky free from obstacles?

Or - again a possibility - is "angle of aberration" largely due to the actual annual movement of stars, as angle between two real positions rather than as angle due to real aberration-of-light processes, and this annual movement caused by angelic movers, which I anyway hold, with St Thomas Aquinas, of being responsible for movements of individual celestial bodies insofar as they differ in angle around Earth from the daily circuit of the Stars?

This last laternative is what I have anyway considered to be the actual truth, for very long. Once I discussed this with Sungenis and he responded "aberration and parallax are different angles". In the heat of discussion, I took this to mean "angles along differnet axes" or "angles on axes that are different angles from us" or sth, and I replied, without absurdity but less to the point than here, that in that case angels could be making somewhat complex dance moves. But what he meant was probably simpler: the measured value of angle is different.

Aberration is an angle uniform for all stars, at least in theory, of 20 arc seconds or 25 arc seconds or whatever.

Parallax is an angle, in the positive field (there is a negative one as well, when one looks closely) of maximum 0.75 or sth arc seconds.

However, this does not preclude that "both angles" are of the same movement (same axis of rotation even) for each of the stars.

"Aberration" (as usually called, I am referring to the angle value) is the medium angle common to all.

"Parallax" of any given star is a kind of aberration (! pun intended !) from that medium value.

So, supposing that - which I do not know°° - aberration counts as 20 arc seconds exactly, and - which I don't know either°° - aberration and parallax go same direction, α Centauri would be actually measured as moving concretely each year 20.75 arc seconds, deduct 20 arc seconds for "aberration" (since uniform) and you get a positive "parallax" (for the individual star) of 0.75 arc seconds°°.

But if 63 Ophiuchi has somewhat less annual movement concretely observed than the 20 arc seconds, it is of course measured by a negative parallax. Heliocentrics do register this, for keeping their records accurate with observations actually seen, but they do so as a preliminary to further on, hopefully, finding out why there was a false measure and how to correct it and then they hope to correct the slightly negative parallax value for 63 Ophiuchi to a slightly positive one.

While the angels directing the movements of α Centauri and 63 Ophiuchi in their turn are awaiting, I presume, perhaps Doomsday to explain that they were both doing about 20 arc seconds of the parallel circle in the sphere of fixed stars, but were avoiding to coincide exactly so as to show they were not seen as doing a 20 arc second parallax due to only Earth moving. And astronomers might then be replying : "how were we supposed to know that! To understand it we would first have to admit you exist!"

And as angels take themselves lightly (that is why they can fly, as Chesterton said), they'll have a good laugh.

However, whether the astronomers might join the laughter or not depends on why they discounted angelic movers. If they did so out of habit, while believing angels in other contexts, well, possibly they were Christians and will have gone to Heaven. But if they discounted the mere possibility because of a clear, decided disbelief in "angels, demons, that sort of thing", well, they are Sadducaeic, Modernistic or Atheistic Apostates and Pagans, and will unless regretting that be heading for a fire where laughter is not very easy. Angels take themselves lightly, that is their persons, their egos. We must not take their existence lightly. It is clearly testified in the Word of God.

Notes:

* I had previously misjudged the distance of a lightday away by a factor of thousand, but fortunately this does not affect my calculations on how big Kepler so and so is, since the comparison was with how many light years it was away, and I was obviously wrong by exactly the same factor of thousand about the light years - or hadn't calculated them - so that, irrespective of my mistake on the distance of "one light day" expressed in km, 26 million instead of 26 billion, the proportions between so and so many light years and the light day are the same.

** Why is twice the distance to the Sun or the annual axis of the Sun 1/90 of the distance to the stars, if they are a light day away? Simple distance to Sun is 8 light minutes, double must be 16 light minutes. 16 min / 24 h = 16 min / 1440 min. 16:1440 = 8:720 = 4:360 = 2:180 = 1:90!

*** I have expressed elsewhere that the probable distance to the stars is one light day. By an even number of light days stars were shining in the same position we see their light now and where they are again. Three light days or more, Adam and Eve would not have been able to see the stars their first evening, how unromantic, so max 2 light days. One more probably than two, as so the birds also could see stars on their first evening, and as each day that way each star is going 2pi light days, more than six light days, but much less than seven light days distance around their periphery around Earth.

° I think Gerardus Bouw too. But they count on stellatum being mechanically tied to Sun and therefore the displacement of stellatum annually to be as great as that of the Sun. Which I do not.

°° Look up your exact values yourselves, in a science book! Dito for if ordinary parallax is augmenting or diminishing it. And also do look up if 0.75 is closer to parallax of α or to proxima Centauri. That is the kind of thing one should be able to trust scientists on.

Jeschua
Ha-Notzri
Ve-Melek
Ha-Jehudim.

À quoi me répondit mon hôte:

Il me semble pourtant

Does the First Diagram Makes Sense?

1) Does the First Diagram Makes Sense? · 2) Aberration and Parallax

I

No, this diagram above does not make sense. If angle to star is in same direction, supposing that "straight up" is the neutral one for a star showing any kind of parallax, then sun and earth should also line up in same direction. In either the Heliocentric or the Geocentric interpretation.

So, the following is a diagram of ordinary parallax. Up and down are opposite seasons. Left is Heliocentric interpretation, right is Geocentric interpretation.

II

As said, left is heliocentric, star has no proper movement involved, angle is fixed by observation, therefore the length of line between Earth and star is fixed as to what lines up with star having same relation to Sun all year through. That some stars do have proper movement diagnosed as such is not here taken into account. Earth is earth, both in relation to Star and in relation to Sun.

Right is geocentric interpretation. In this case, the star has a proper movement not diagnosed as such by heliocentric astronomers, it need not be as big as that which the sun has, same time, same direction. Star and Sun are not the same, neither in themselves nor in relation to Earth. Therefore the annual orbits could be smaller with the star.

But does above, first diagram suggest anything to you?

Yes, in it the left is Geocentric and it has star opposite side of Sun, in their annual orbits.

This does at least for extremely small parallactic angles occur, as they are measured. 63 Ophiuchi is an example.

So, supposing this is NOT a measurement error. What does this so called "negative parallax" look like if analysed according to the diagrams?

III

That is right, even in Heliocentric interpretation you need to have star have a movement of its own, not that of Sun (supposed not to have one, at least not one taken into account in annual relations of Sun to stars), and not that of Earth either.

Therefore giving no information about distance to star either.

If ALL stars showing parallax were indeed showing only positive parallax, as in diagram II, then one could say ALL stars were stationary in relation to Sun, at least excepting the proper movements which are non-annual and non orbital, as far as as yet observed..

But if some stars show negative parallax, even on Heliocentric terms that means a proper movement which is annual and orbitting. Either a mechanci link to Sun - or a voluntary act on part of sth like an angelic mover, as the Scholastics very unanimously thought when considering the subject of movement of celestial bodies, other opinions being marginal (and mechanic causes being less common than either animated stars, that is stars that have their own life and souls or than God alone moving each directly).

New blog on the kid : Russie 108, France 3
http://nov9blogg9.blogspot.com

Φιλολoγικά/Philologica : Russie (derrière les États-Unis) 18, France 10
http://filolohika.blogspot.com

Triviū, Quadriviū, 7 cætera : France 7 (derrière les États-Unis)
http://triv7quadriv.blogspot.com

deretour : France 9 (avant les États-Unis)
http://hglundahlsblog.blogspot.com

Under a status of a Catholic ex-FB friend* whom I "talked" with earlier and who is now denouncing me:

I unfriended him long ago, I don't remember precisely why, but certainly it was in part because I discerned a certain level of bizarreness in his writings that wasn't sufficiently explained by his lack of fluency in English.

Was he in fact attributing to my supposed "lack of fluency in English" (which seems to have become a topos** among certain circles) what he would otherwise have attributed to my "bizarreness"?

Either way, it was a very great idea, if avoiding a confrontation of ideas was his goal, to attribute it to either./HGL

I did read your full exchange, and you treated Prthvi both uncharitably and most strangely. Your point seems to be that Catholics in the US are acting as Protestants if they follow US law in not permitting 14-year-old girls to marry. That is both non-sensical and contrary to Catholic teaching on the observance of a nation's laws. And it is simply bizarre that you think Prthvi's labeling of people in pictures is either suspicious or has anything at all to do with YOU. I urge you to pray and examine your conscience about your conduct.

HGL
No, that was HER interpretation of my point. If you read my work through again, you will find I said Protestants act BETTER than Catholics, and that US law does not require this violation of canon law.

"That is both non-sensical and contrary to Catholic teaching on the observance of a nation's laws."

But look at the real laws:

http://www.jewsnews.co.il/2015/04/27/un-official-we-should-make-every-effort-to-depopulate-the-planet-2/

Now, I suppose the video verifies the quotes attributed to Christiana Figueres, and if so, she needs the debunking she gets here.

And especially losing the power she now wields as UN offical.

Here is what God said about population:

Genesis 1: [26] And he said: Let us make man to our image and likeness: and let him have dominion over the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the air, and the beasts, and the whole earth, and every creeping creature that moveth upon the earth. [27] And God created man to his own image: to the image of God he created him: male and female he created them. [28] And God blessed them, saying: Increase and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it, and rule over the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the air, and all living creatures that move upon the earth. [29] And God said: Behold I have given you every herb bearing seed upon the earth, and all trees that have in themselves seed of their own kind, to be your meat: [30] And to all beasts of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to all that move upon the earth, and wherein there is life, that they may have to feed upon. And it was so done.

I am taking this from a Catholic Bible, and if Glazerson was right about this year being numeric equivalent of passages about returning to God, then we might see the author of the article as a Catholic (but not a Bergoglio style one), within a year. Best wishes for conversion, if that is what God has in mind for you!

A Murderer Who Goes to Confessions Presumably Agrees Not to Murder Again

One Ross Douthat has said a few things about the so called Pope Francis (a k a Bergoglio). This has sparked some dissent, in support of "Pope Francis" or of what Ross Douthat suspects him of.

I'll pick the first letter:

To the Editor:

Re “The Plot to Change Catholicism” (column, Oct. 18):

I was stunned by Ross Douthat’s negative view of Pope Francis. The phrases “ostentatious humility,” “maneuvers” and “plot” really jump off the page. The pope’s humility in rejecting limo rides and the swanky papal apartments is not ostentation but a genuine expression of his personal vocation.

He chose Francis as his name and honors St. Francis of Assisi by emulating his rejection of wealth and privilege and in his outreach to the poor, the ill and God’s creatures.

Furthermore, I have never understood why a murderer has only to go to confession to receive the sacrament of the Eucharist, while a divorced and remarried Catholic, or a Catholic who marries a divorced person, is barred from receiving the sacrament in perpetuity.

And how is a divorce so different from an annulment?

I also don’t understand how a more welcoming church is viewed as a threat by pious Catholics.

Jesus told us to forgive seventy times seven, so the church’s inability to forgive divorced Catholics runs counter to that spirit. Pope Francis is nothing but consistent in adhering to Jesus’ calls for forgiveness and love.

SARA STEVENSON

Austin, Tex.

Now I'll go into detailed answers:

Sara
I was stunned by Ross Douthat’s negative view of Pope Francis. The phrases “ostentatious humility,” “maneuvers” and “plot” really jump off the page. The pope’s humility in rejecting limo rides and the swanky papal apartments is not ostentation but a genuine expression of his personal vocation.

HGL
If his personal vocation is poverty, perhaps he should have turned down papacy.

Sara
He chose Francis as his name and honors St. Francis of Assisi by emulating his rejection of wealth and privilege and in his outreach to the poor, the ill and God’s creatures.

HGL
But giving an indulgence for following him on Twitter (account Pontifex) was perhaps not emulating his desire to be forgotten?

Sara
Furthermore, I have never understood why a murderer has only to go to confession to receive the sacrament of the Eucharist, while a divorced and remarried Catholic, or a Catholic who marries a divorced person, is barred from receiving the sacrament in perpetuity.

HGL
As said in title: a murderer who goes to confession presumably agrees not to murder again. If a remarried person agrees to take a one way train ticket after confession and try to patch things up with real spouse, presumably that remarried person will not be blocked from receiving the Blessed Sacrament.

Sara
And how is a divorce so different from an annulment?

HGL
A divorce was under Jewish law and is under Secular law a kind of makeshift. It does NOT give a Catholic any right to marry someone else and does NOT belong to the Canon Law of the Church.

An annulment is like: you find out your spouse was adopted, she does some research, she finds out her birthmother is the woman you also honour as a mother, you realise she is your half sister. Now, half siblings cannot marry, therefore you realise you have a cause for annulment. Even secular and Jewish courts would grant you annulment in that case.

You only need the documents to prove it.

Or you find out that when your spouse married you, her father was held captive, and he was released when you had your wedding night, and she is sad about not having had the opportunity to marry her real love, who is still unmarried, since he rejected the mafiosi related girl who was your wife's rival. The Church will fix that, if you have something like a court verdict against the mafiosi, or perhaps a sworn statement from your father in law. Your consent to marriage is not valid if given under a threat.

In such a case, a secular court would also probably annul the marriage licence as opposed to granting you divorce, supposing that mafia intrigue had been proven in court.

Sara
I also don’t understand how a more welcoming church is viewed as a threat by pious Catholics.

HGL
If his version of "more welcoming" is extending annulments so as to make them hard to distinguish from divorce, and you seem to have some problem with that, with making the difference, then he is not respecting Church law and indeed not respecting the Gospel. Christ made indissolubility of marriage a prime item on Christian morality.

Sara
Jesus told us to forgive seventy times seven, so the church’s inability to forgive divorced Catholics runs counter to that spirit. Pope Francis is nothing but consistent in adhering to Jesus’ calls for forgiveness and love.

HGL
I seem to recall Protestants of Lutheran confession saying same thing, or even of Non-Conformist ones, back when I was recently converted to Catholicism.

Christ forgave an adulteress. But he told her to go and sin no more. He told the truth to a Samaritan woman - that truth being a remarriage is not a marriage, or in other words, the husband she then had was not her husband.

John 4: [17] The woman answered, and said: I have no husband. Jesus said to her: Thou hast said well, I have no husband: [18] For thou hast had five husbands: and he whom thou now hast, is not thy husband. This thou hast said truly.

John 8:[10] Then Jesus lifting up himself, said to her: Woman, where are they that accused thee? Hath no man condemned thee? [11] Who said: No man, Lord. And Jesus said: Neither will I condemn thee. Go, and now sin no more.

In other words, you must realise the truth and decide to sin no more in order to be forgiven.

Now I will quote Douthat:*

... And Francis himself, in his daily homilies, has consistently criticized Catholicism’s “doctors of the law,” its modern legalists and Pharisees — a not-even-thinly-veiled signal of his views.

(Though of course, in the New Testament the Pharisees allowed divorce; it was Jesus who rejected it.)

And yet his plan is not necessarily succeeding. There reportedly still isn’t anything like a majority for the proposal within the synod, which is probably why the organizers hedged their bets for a while about whether there would even be a final document. ...

  • davantage d'école qui soit davantage obligatoire et davantage laïque - j'ai vu une pancarte avec le texte "trop d'enfants [ou jeunes?] déscolarisés dans les griffes des fous de Dieu", ce qui renvoie à ceci;
  • davantage de rigolade sur tous les thèmes, surtout religieux (Marianne);
