Perspective on the Children's Crusade

Assorted retorts from yahoo boards and elsewhere: Spidey Fallacy Two Debunks · New blog on the kid: Alex Yordanov Objected · Perspective on the Children's Crusade

Lateran III, 1179
https://www.papalencyclicals.net/councils/ecum11.htm

Canon 18

Since the church of God is bound to provide like a mother for those in want, with regard to both the things which concern the support of the body and those which lead to the progress of the soul, therefore, in order that the opportunity of learning to read and progress in study is not withdrawn from poor children who cannot be helped by the support of their parents, in every cathedral church a master is to be assigned some proper benefice so that he may teach the clerics of that church and the poor scholars. Thus the needs of the teacher are to be supplied and the way to knowledge opened for learners. In other churches and monasteries too, if anything in times past has been assigned in them for this purpose, it should be restored. Let no one demand any money for a licence to teach, or under cover of some custom seek anything from teachers, or forbid anyone to teach who is suitable and has sought a licence. Whoever presumes to act against this decree is to be deprived of ecclesiastical benefice. Indeed, it seems only right that in the church of God a person should not have the fruit of his labour if through self-seeking he strives to prevent the progress of the churches by selling the licence to teach.

Lateran IV, 1215, three years after the Children's Crusade
https://www.papalencyclicals.net/councils/ecum12-2.htm#1

Canon 11

On schoolmasters for the poor

Zeal for learning and the opportunity to make progress is denied to some through lack of means. The Lateran council therefore dutifully decreed that “in each cathedral church there should be provided a suitable benefice for a master who shall instruct without charge the clerics of the cathedral church and other poor scholars, thus at once satisfying the teacher’s needs and opening up the way of knowledge to learners”. This decree, however, is very little observed in many churches. We therefore confirm it and add that not only in every cathedral church but also in other churches with sufficient resources, a suitable master elected by the chapter or by the greater and sounder part of it, shall be appointed by the prelate to teach grammar and other branches of study, as far as is possible, to the clerics of those and other churches. The metropolitan church shall have a theologian to teach scripture to priests and others and especially to instruct them in matters which are recognized as pertaining to the cure of souls. The income of one prebend shall be assigned by the chapter to each master, and as much shall be assigned by the metropolitan to the theologian. The incumbent does not by this become a canon but he receives the income of one as long as he continues to teach. If the metropolitan church finds providing for two masters a burden, let it provide for the theologian in an aforesaid way but get adequate provision made for the grammarian in another church of the city or diocese.

In other words, the Latin West at this time had a distinct problem of analphabetism, which was being remedied, but was not yet remedied.

At the same time, this was little more than a century after other popular Crusaders had run amuck. Partly in the same region, as Cologne is on the Rhine.

Therefore the Children's Crusade is perfectly credible. It kind of became to the Middle Ages what Altamont was to the Hippies. In 1312 or 1412, it would not have been credible, and a single not fully grown crusader ended on a bonfire.

1324 vs 2024

1324
under some ideal conditions, a boy of 14 could be a married man (having a wealthy father, being the owner of newly cultivated land — though that was more like 25 to 50 years earlier — being the shepherd or goatherd of the village)

2024

Can One Wear a Capuce Without Being Dominican (Or Franciscan)?

Here is a Dominican who explains why Dominicans wear them:

Why Do Dominicans Wear Harry Potter Capes? #AskAFriar (Aquinas 101)
26th April 2022 | The Thomistic Institute
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aM8A3Dndq8c

While a habit of a Dominican or a Franciscan has to involve a Capuce, a Capuce can exist outside a religious habit.

Let's look at how the article linked to describes the capuce and the cappa:

The capuce is a hood attached to a circular piece of cloth that falls over the shoulders and comes down to a point in the small of the back. This hood used to be simply attached to the scapular (like a Carthusian’s habit) but at some point it became detached from the scapular and evolved into a rather elegant shoulder-cape with hood.

The black cappa, from which we get the name Black Friars, is just a large cape that covers most of the white habit. It was worn for warmth and when travelling. This too had a hood that became detached, resulting in a black capuce.

Let me quote once again the description of the cappa:

It was worn for warmth and when travelling.

There are obviously other ways to have warm clothing. But when travelling, you are exposed to different temperatures. A cape is useful, because you can wrap it around you when it's cold and throw it back when it's warmer.

A hood (or capuce) is useful, because you can put it up whan it's cold and - throw it back - when it's warmer.

There is no law of the Church saying that cape and capuce may not be worn by laymen, unless obviously impersonating an existing monastic or religious habit. So just having a capuce similar to a habit doesn't count. Mine is a gaudier colour and has Robin Hood-like "shoestrings" below the neck.

For my part, I wear breeches of the renaissance type, like the Swiss Guards. I am very certain that no religious order ever had such as visible clothing or as part of the habit.

My cape is also not of the monastic cappa model, any more than of the 30's French policeman and 70's French ladies' model. It's like the pelisse - in Hungarian it is called mente.

Hungarian hussars wore a pelisse as well, which was a short-waisted over-jacket similar to the dolmány. This piece of clothing was worn on only one side most of the time, so it was held on by an ornate cord.

Like the cape thrown back, the pelisse worn on one side is cooler than a cape tucked around or a pelisse worn as a jacket. Again, fits varying temperatures.

You don't only have that when travelling (especially on foot), but also as a homeless person. And I've found it so useful, I think I will keep it even if I get a home.

And, as with the late renaissance breeches, the pelisse is very clearly not a part of any religious habit (the pelisse and capuche of the Templars look different, there the pelisse is not in fact a jacket, but closer to the actual cape, the cappa described for Dominicans in the quote). So no, the clothes I wear, unlike the Dominican habit, are not an "elaborate version of the wedding ring" and that one tying me to God.

Will Africa be Self Sufficient in Clean Water?

Such self-sufficiency involves two things:

  • sufficient humidity overall, as opposed to dehydration;
  • accessing the water as ground water through wells.

Before going to each, I will go to the European Middle Ages. 1400 AD even the Portuguese were not involved in Africa. It is a period from which I will highlight two technologies.

  • windmills
  • water pumps.

Windmills were invented in pre-Islamic Persia but were of another type. And they were used for irrigation. They came to Europe, in the modified form we now know, through Crusaders. In the Netherlands, they are not just used for grinding wheat flour or other cereal products, they are also used to drain polders of water. You know the polders? The ground there is below the sea surface. Why are they dry? Well, they are surrounded by walls, shielding them from the sea, and they are pumped empty of water (draining to dykes accessible to windmill powered water pumps).

Water pumps have an Islamic past too, but were put into normal use in Europe around 1400. Arguably in a simpler form. Normal people with shovels and pickaxes can dig a well, and normal blacksmiths create what is needed for a pump.

The first project would be to create big dykes* from the Mediterranean to the South of Libya (ideally the conflicting tribes ceding land to the project and gaining shares in it), pump water through them on several levels, by windmills, as international powers that be are not likely to accept nuclear power (as Ghadaffi and LaRouche wanted), then let the sea water evaporate from salines in the Sahara, giving both salt, as in La Camargue, and more rain.

Some care should be taken to avoid the Mediterranean is drained too much at a time, the Straits of Gibraltar should ideally not become a waterfall.

The other project would be to allow Africans from different countries to study Medieval pump making and well digging techniques.

At present, a charity for water is offering to dig wells supplied with pumps, with modern drills and with pumps probably made in Europe for the African use, or perhaps in South Africa. With the know-how for Medieval pumps, Africans would be free to do it themselves.

Regardez maintenant ceci:

By carrying out autopsies of polio victims, Sabin was able to demonstrate that the poliovirus multiplied and attacked the intestines before it moved to the central nervous system. This also suggested that polio virus could be grown in other tissues besides embryonic brain tissue, leading to easier and cheaper methods of vaccine development.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Sabin

Et l'article donne comme sources:

"Jonas Salk and Albert Bruce Sabin". Science History Institute. January 8, 2017. Retrieved June 15, 2020.

et Wilson, Daniel J. (2009). Polio. Santa Barbara, California: ABC-CLIO. pp. 95, 123–125. ISBN 9780313358975. Retrieved 15 June 2020.

De la première source, je cite:

A year later he returned to the United States, having accepted a fellowship at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research. There Sabin developed an interest in poliovirus. In 1936 he and a colleague were able to grow poliovirus in brain tissue from a human embryo.

et

From this finding Sabin was able to prove that polio first attacked the intestinal tract before moving on to nerve tissue. This discovery suggested that the virus could be grown in non-nerve tissue, a feat later accomplished in tissue culture by the Nobel laureates Enders, Weller, and Robbins. Growing poliovirus in non-nerve tissue culture was more practical than Sabin’s previous achievement of growing it in brain tissue from embryos.

musicalia : Rosa rorans
https://hglundahlsmusik.blogspot.com/2016/05/rosa-rorans.html

http://www.bibleenligne.com/commentaire-simple/commentaire/ap/1690-apocalypse-13-1-18.html

Until recently it was believed that Anglo-Saxon settlement initially avoided the area immediately around Londinium. However, the discovery in 2008 of an Anglo-Saxon cemetery at Covent Garden indicates that the incomers had begun to settle there at least as early as the 6th century and possibly in the 5th. The main focus of this settlement was outside the Roman walls, clustering a short distance to the west along what is now the Strand, between the Aldwych and Trafalgar Square. It was known as Lundenwic, the -wic suffix here denoting a trading settlement. Recent excavations have also highlighted the population density and relatively sophisticated urban organisation of this earlier Anglo-Saxon London, which was laid out on a grid pattern and grew to house a likely population of 10–12,000.

During Justinian I's reign, the city's population reached about 500,000 people.[47] However, the social fabric of Constantinople was also damaged by the onset of the Plague of Justinian between 541–542 AD. It killed perhaps 40% of the city's inhabitants.[48]

If Electricity Goes Down - What do You Do?

Electricity could go down for various reasons. Sabotage by terrorists, violent climate change (too much solar activity might cut out electric currents) or simply disuse.

The latter, gradual, getting out of a dependance that might be bad in more catastrophic situations, is of course my preference, but I don't think it is all that likely, right now.

Now, the question is, what would you do?

Well, the Middle Ages are a very well documented example of what one can do without electricity.

Green Book and Medieval Conditions

Citing the Green book of Muammar al-Qaddafi (p. 59):

EXAMPLES OF WAGE-LABOUR: FOR THE SOCIETY, FOR PRIVATE ENTERPRISE, AND SELF-EMPLOYMENT:

  • First example:
    • (a) A worker produces ten apples for society. The society gives him one apple for his production and it fully satisfies his needs.
    • (b) A worker produces ten apples for society. The society gives him one apple for his production which does not satisfy his needs.

  • Second example:
    • A worker produces ten apples for another person and gets wages less than the price of one apple.

  • Third example:
    • A worker produces ten apples for himself.

  • The conclusion:
    • In the first example (a), because the worker’s wages are limited to one unit which satisfies his needs, he has no incentive to increase his production. Thus, all the labour force that works for society is psychologically apathetic.
    • (b) The worker has no incentive even to produce because he cannot satisfy his needs from the wages. However, he continues working without any incentives because generally, like all members, he is forced to acquiesce to the working conditions of the society.

    • In the second example, the worker works basically to get wages and not to produce. Since his wages cannot satisfy his needs, the choices are either to look for another master to get a better price for his work, or be forced, as a matter of survival, to remain where he is.

    • In the third example, the self-employed alone is the one who produces eagerly and voluntarily.

If a Medieval peasant produced ten apples, how many did he keep? I'd say, nine.

OK, perhaps not always apples - but ten sheaves of wheat, he arguably kept eight to nine.

Why?

Because peasants were 9 tenths of society, and because expert was low.

This means, he arguably kept most of what he produced.

Producing for others is limited to:

  • needs of others in society
  • needs of exporters

Now, as to export, arguably the price of sales abroad went to a high extent to his lord.

As to needs of others (non-peasants, not even related as family), this included the lord, and this went through the lord, he arguably kept rather much of this part, if not as needing it himself, at least as selling it for others.

It seems I recall - but you had better verify with Régine Pernoud - that the peasant even if he was a serf, kept all he produced on one piece of land, the glebe, while the lord kept all his serfs produced on the demesne. This means, if the peasant had a surplus, he could at least sell it locally and thereby improve his conditions as to assets he was not growing on his glebe.

Yes, I think this means, conditions were rather benign for the Medieval peasant.

Today, farmers have lots more machinery, but, they are much more of a minority in each country and also much less selfsupporting in diversity of needs, and therefore much more individually dependent on markets. This means, today the example of a farmer producing ten apples and keeping one is in fact realistic.

This also means, they need much more fuel to transport what they produce and to buy what they don't produce.

While I am Glad Freedom from Communism ...

... I was going to add "was achieved" but then asked myself "was it?"

Anyway, some things are not quite as they should in post-Communist states.

"Education is the fundament to social cohesion, which is also the fundament of security in the country," said Anna Novosad, a senior official at Ukraine's Ministry of Education and Science. She attributed Russia's annexation of the Crimean peninsula in 2014 partly to the disintegration and linguistic isolation of the local, mainly Russian-speaking population from the rest of Ukraine.

From mail dot com : Ukraine's Hungarian minority threatened by new education law
https://www.mail.com/int/news/europe/8850588-ukraines-hungarian-minority-threatened-education-l.html

I am sorry, there are two problems here.

  • 1) Hungarian minority and Russian minority are not the same thing. Ukraine has a border with Hungary, but it's the second smallest. Hungary is also much smaller than Russia.

While Crimea is not on the land frontier between Russia and Ukraine, there is a very small strait between Cape Fonar and Kerch on Crimea and Krasnodar and Sennoy in undisputed Russia. In practise, all of the Azov sea can be viewed as a frontier between Russia and Crimea.

Also, Hungary was not as well militarised in the East Block as Russia and is not as militarised now. "23 October until 10 November 1956" are dates that should tell you something of Russian weakness and Hungarian strength? No, the opposite. And Ukraine and Russia these days share the heritage of the military of Soviet Russia back then.

So, drawing conclusions from Russians on Crimea and applying them to Hungarians near Hungarian frontier would seem somewhat ... distrustful (I hate it when the pseudo-diagnosis "paranoid" gets into my head whenever I look for these words).

  • 2) But even supposing there were a real long term I will not say threat but risk, the method is wrong.

"Education is the fundament to social cohesion, which is also the fundament of security in the country,"

19th C Prussia rehashing pre-Roman Athenian and Spartan educational totalitarianism. Also even amplified in France by Ferry-Combes (if some Bretons sided with German invaders, bad memories of Breton forbidding schools under Third Republic contributed), and by Hitler's Reichschulgesetz of 1938, which recently made the Wunderlich family refugees from a Germany reputedly heir to the free West Germany.

Rome as well as the Latin Middle Ages did not require certain educations for all citizens, nor even (until near the end one country, Scotland) of all nobles. Parents were free to educate as they wanted. In positions were the taking over was not hereditary a specified education could be required - but it was a specialist one, not one which was imposed by administrational decree on all citizens (though the clergy were in a position to impose its contents by influence - as nowadays often the teachers are).

This means, apart from heresy (Albigensians were not allowed to send Albigensian* children to Albigensian schools, they were not allowed to be Albigensians in the first place and fairly rightly so - but Jews were only allowed to send their children to Jewish schools), parents were basically free to chose their children's education, including the choice of language. And obviously, the children were raised in their religion as well.

There was no official telling any parent "no, use your language at home if you like, but your children are getting taught in my language, not yours". There was also no official telling any parent "you send your children to school, or we will take them away from you" (apart perhaps from Catholic catechism to children whose parents were officially penitents after having been Albigensians and having abjured that). I cannot guarantee that the Jews in those days had similar freedoms individually in relation** to their Jewish community, but Christian citizens in Christian countries did.

So, the problem is that Anna Novosad's solution to a probably imagined raher than also real problem is so much of a Communist solution. And, yes, the upholding of such a solution is part of why Gaudium et Spes does not strike me as a real document of the Church or the man principally signing it as either a real Pope or a real canonised Saint.

This is one reason why I try to take on Medieval details*** in my dress, by resewing. I don't have gender dysphoria, it's not cross dressing, but I definitely have chronological dysphoria. Perhaps many had in September 1968 when I was born, after Soviets marched into Prague ....

* Since some fairly ill versed in history people are saying things like Albigensians and Waldensians are the bridge between Primitive Church and Protestant Churches, no, they only existed some centuries after year 1000, and Waldensian remnants later officially became Calvinist, for support against Catholicism. ** I rather suspect they hadn't, as a post-Christ but pre-Destruction of Temple High Priest made education compulsory. Too bad for them.

If You Get a 13 Year Old Girl Pregnant ...

... you should normally have life time sentence. It should be pronounced by a priest, if you are both Catholics, an Imam if you are both Muslims, a Rabbi if you are both Jews and so on. And you should be happy about it.

But, some people believe you should have a few years in gaol, the baby death penalty for having you as father, or rather, for having the 13 year old girl as mother and that she should have life time (or whatever time may suit) with shrinks over the trauma of seeing you in gaol and aborting.

One good thing about Putin's Russia is, some teens have given birth:

5 Cases of Youngest Russian Girls Giving Birth at Very Early Age
Posted on July 23, 2017 by tim
englishrussia.com/2017/07/23/5-cases-of-youngest-russian-girls-giving-birth-at-very-early-age/

But one of the fathers tried to deny it, one of the girls had to fight her mother in order to not abort, one of the fathers could not marry the mother of his baby because of being sentenced to 8 years over having an affair with her. These things remind me so much of ... Communism.

But suppose that the girls could legally have married (one married by having connections), wouldn't some have got better husbands, wouldn't the teacher have said simply "sorry, I can't teach her since I am going to marry her and am father of her child, can you get another teacher for her?" and wouldn't there be lots fewer abortions?

There is something wrong with a country in which a 12 year old girl cannot marry but can abort if she gets pregnant. There are lots of things that are wrong with lots of other countries as well, including this one. It was not wrong in the Medieval society.

Kentucky and Marriage

Status quo, as resumed by a blog post:

Currently, teens under 18 in Kentucky can marry at age 16 or 17 with a parent’s permission. Teens under 16 can marry with a judge’s permission in case of a pregnancy, though critics say if a girl under 16 is pregnant, it is evidence of a sex crime because she would have been too young to consent to a sexual relationship.

First of all, a pregnant woman should be able to marry the father of the child unless it would involve incest, adultery, sacrilege of vows of chastity (if the father is a priest or the pregnant woman a nun, since in the case a "marriage" would be invalid and involve further sacrileges beyond the one already done), or disparity of worship (if one is baptised and other is not baptised and won't get baptised).

Second, a sex crime can be amended by precisely culprit marrying victim if she so wants to.

Third, in Medieval Latin Christendom, a girl of Twelve was legally capable to marry, even without parental consent. She was also legally presumed capable of consent to fornication and adultery (which in Christendom were not punishable by death), except if she was a virgin, in which case the crime stuprum was a kind of equivalent to statutory rape, except it depended on her being virgin, not on her being 12. So, a widow of 12 and a half could legally consent to fornication. A virgin of 15 or 17 could not, but the culprit was free to make up by marrying the victim. Parental consent was customary except where already married and widowed or already sham married and annulled. It was not a legal requirement.

These are the rules that the Catholic Church upheld, these are the rules that should be upheld.

Making courts capable of forbidding marriage even with parental consent, as proposed by some legislators of Kentucky*, fulfils dire Biblical prophecy:

"[1] Now the Spirit manifestly saith, that in the last times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to spirits of error, and doctrines of devils, [2] Speaking lies in hypocrisy, and having their conscience seared, [3] Forbidding to marry, to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving by the faithful, and by them that have known the truth."
[1 Timothy 4:1-3]

Obviously, the "marriage at 18 and parental consent for no one" rule would involve some evil spirits coming some places earlier than others.

In 1870, it was imposed on Former Papal States, I suppose, as they were annected by the Kingdom of Italy. If not, Kingdom of Italy got involved in that game after offending Papacy. Either way, while Pius IX ruled in Rome and Romagna, including Nettuno, a twelve year old girl could certainly marry. By early 20th C. it was 18, as I read in Dummrath.

A bit later this evil change came to Russia, in the case of 18 in the Russian Revolution.

In this context, consider that while 616 is not the number of the beast, since it belongs to Nero rather than to Domitian**, it is still bad enough. How does this relate? Well, in Russian, both Vladimir and Ilich would have been very valid ways to refer to a certain Ulianov. He was quarter Swedish and in sweden his last name is spelled Uljanov. Now check IULJANOV. Even so, Czars had previous to that deviated from the Catholic standard.

This is a reason why Kentucky should not deviate from it further than they already did.

** How does 666 belong to Domitian? Well, if you take Latin vocative "Domitiane" and spell it DOMITIANE or French phrase "à Domitien" and spell it ADOMITIEN, you only need to add up ASCII values for each letter, there are no accented ones, especially not in the Latin vocative (French tend to omit accents in capitalisation, but this is optional), so the 26 standard letters go in upper case 65 for A to 90 for Z.

"I could understand in the medieval ages how the papacy manipulated Christians into thinking that the pope is the key to heaven just so they can monopolize on religion & politics at the time,"

Why? I could for one not understand how papacy could have done that without at least fairly good Biblical support.

Especially as they were NOT monopolising politics.

"but today is a different age yet a lot of people cannot think for themselves?"

You seem to have little talent for thinking for yourself if that is how you contrast Middle Ages with today.

  • thinking for oneself has not become easier by mass education, since it is a compulsory one;
  • thinking for oneself does not mean thinking what you would want someone thinking for himself to think.

I would say that on Arabic Peninsula, it was a reaction against Jewish vs Christian feuds, as imported from Ethiopia into Yemen the century or centuries before Muhammed.

But in a more general way, I don’t know. Why would it be?

I spontaneously came to think of Der Bundschuh.

It was some league which had lost its banner, and the banner keeper or sn else made an improvised banner of one of his shoes. They won the battle and the shoe was accepted as their new banner.

However, that is not a shuriken style weapon, it is if anything a shuriken style banner.

As for weapons, I don’t know.

Not mean to be harsh, but are you being sarcastic or “shuriken” has meanings others than the weapon?

I consider the terms of the question misleading.

Evolution belief is not an “understanding of evolution”.

It is not an understanding of genetics, mutations, epigenetics and natural / by breeder / selection.

And creationism is not a complete fixity of species either.

I will give an example : Isaac de la Peyrere was a Jew who converted to Catholicism.

France has a way of honouring Evolutionists even if they are not orthodox Darwinists or Neo-Darwinsists. Therefore, it is not surprising that streets are named for him.

So, I had to look him up.

He wrote a book stating that there were human people before Adam and which seemed to indicate for instance Black Africans or Red Indians were really not Adamites but pre-Adamites.

His book was condemned, as it should.

So, this story shows that in condemning Evolutionism, I am taking my stand with the Church of back then, with the Church of the Centuries and indeed Millennia (close to two of them by now, just counting the Catholic Church without the predecessor Jewish Church as existing between Aaron and Kaiaphas, or its predecessor the Patriarchal Church).

I think James Hough and another friend of mine already answered, namely Catholicism.

Next question is : what is the true Catholicism, Orthodoxy or Roman Catholicism?

I’d say, and I think they said, Roman Catholicism.

NEXT question is, what is true Roman Catholicism, who is the true Pope?

Can you trust “Francis” or “Benedict” or both, or should you look around between Pope Michael, Palmarians, Alexander IX, Feminist Colinists in Canada …? I say the second and have submitted to Pope Michael.

Catholicism is the only religion which was established by God, in person, and guaranteed by Him. It is the only one that He sent the Holy Spirit to guide, the only one He promised to be with it until the end of time. Catholic Christianity is His Body in a very real sense, and His Bride, and He does not have multiple bodies, and he is not a polygamist.

Protestantism is a collection of various religions which were made up by disaffected Catholics who LEFT Christ’s Church to found their own “churches”. They may call themselves Christianity, they may rewrite the Bible to agree with their teachings, and they rewrite Christianity itself to be palatable to their followers, but the only Church that Christ established and guaranteed, the only Church that has been here for 2,000 years, and the only Church which will be here at the end, REMAINS the Catholic Church, and no amount or redefining terms or rewriting history or the Bible is going to change the fact that there were no other Christians for hundreds of years, and there will no other Christians in heaven.

On that last statement, please note that since the Catholic Church IS the Body of Christ (see Acts (9)) anyone who is saved is saved through the Catholic Church even if they are not a visible member of the Church. Thus a baptized non-Catholic Christian, IF they are saved, are saved through the Catholic Church. And even a non-baptized person who is genuinely searching for God, and trying to lead the best life possible in their circumstances would still be saved through the Church.

Does this mean that people do not need to become Catholic, or that Catholics do not need to evangelize? By no means. Everyone who is saved dies in a state of grace - with no unforgiven mortal (serious) sin on their soul. The only normal way for sin to be forgiven is through the sacrament of penance.

Can God save someone outside the Church who has never heard of Christ? Can God save someone who was raised with an animus towards the Catholic Church which makes their conversion all but impossible. Sure, He can. Does He? We don’t know. The only thing that we know for sure is that He established His Church - the Catholic Church - for men’s salvation. Everything outside the visible Catholic Church is mere speculation on our part.

Interesting view, I always heard Catholicism was established by a power hungry emperor, Constantine, who presided the council in 325, and used much violence (inter alia melted lead poured into the throats of unwilling bishops) to form his church into a suitable instrument for his power politics. He himself was no Christian by the way, he was only baptized when he died. If you think there has been 2000 years of Christianity, you calculate badly. 2000 years ago Christ was just an adolescent, and had not even entered his ministry. Let`s see if your church will pass this milestone yet.

Hi Mr. Nijhof,

The fact that you never heard of commonly accepted history just proves that you were educated in a Protestant influenced education system.

It’s not my view, it has been the infallible teaching of the Catholic Church since the beginning. Everyone who has taken a Church history course knows when Constantine was baptized, and knows exactly how “Christian” he was. Which has exactly nothing to do with a church which was already nearing its third century mark at that point - after having surviving atrocious treatment by the Roman Empire.

The ridiculous theory that Catholicism was established by Constantine is just a red herring, one among many, concocted by Protestants to try and give themselves validly by attacking Christ’s Church. Won’t work, Christ had guaranteed His Church and kept it around for 1,500 years at that point, anything they come up with is just ridiculous at that point.

2,000 is just a round number referring to two millennia of Christianity, I’m not using a calculator.

First, you have left out the entire Eastern/Orthodox church in terms of churches having a 2,000 year history.

Second, ou disowning all other Christians reminds me of Paul telling the believers that the eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you.”

The Reformation was finally touched off (it had been brewing for a while) when the Roman Catholic church, in an effort led by a Dominican Friar named John Tetzel, was selling forgiveness of sins and release from purgatory to fund the refurbishment of St. Peter’s Basilica. Martin Luther tried to ask questions and point out theological problems with this process (read his 95 Theses) but the response of the Roman Catholic church was to put a price on his head. Martin Luther did not want to start a new church. He wanted to call the Roman Catholic church back to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who would never have sold forgiveness. He didn’t even sell healing. “Freely you have received, freely give.” I would be willing to have a discussion in much greater detail if you are interested. I am being intentionally brief because if Quora has a fault, it’s that some of the answers posted are very long.

Hi Mr. Rallison,

As I have gotten older, what is important has become much more important to me; and I strive each and every day to know and do the Will of God in my life. I find it extremely sad that so many people over so many centuries have tried to come up with their own versions of Christianity.

Although we are all called to be evangelists in our own particular field, and none of us can walk away from that, nevertheless, I find myself overwhelmed with just caring for and educating the converts right in front of me. I do find it interesting and necessary to answer questions when I can spare a few minutes, but I must always draw the line if it threatens to tear away time from those whom God has given to me to take care of.

I don’t know if any of us can ever be described as “comfortable” while we are away from the Lord; this life was never ever meant to be comfortable, it is a time of decision, and time of fighting for Him and His Kingdom. Anytime I start to feel comfortable, I know that I am sliding the other way, away from my God and what is asked of me.

Does that make sense?

Oremus pro invicem,

James

There is little I can add to James Hough’s answer.

On the other hand, it appears that many answers here are written as a shopping guide: “this part is good, that part is bad, pick one”. That is not a serious approach. Religion is not a club, not an object of art and not a lifestyle choice. The purpose of religion is simple: to teach you how to have eternal life after you die.

Anyone interested in salvation should avoid facile answers stemming from the falsehood that one is saved by faith alone and is instructed in salvation by scripture alone. These were gross simplifications of faith, and these both simplifications are contradicted by the Holy Scripture itself:

…wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

Was not Abraham our father justified by works, offering up Isaac his son upon the altar? Seest thou, that faith did co-operate with his works; and by works faith was made perfect? And the scripture was fulfilled, saying: Abraham believed God, and it was reputed to him to justice, and he was called the friend of God. Do you see that by works a man is justified; and not by faith only? And in like manner also Rahab the harlot, was not she justified by works, receiving the messengers, and sending them out another way?

For even as the body without the spirit is dead; so also faith without works is dead. (James 2:20–24)

Faith is necessary for salvation, but so do good works. In fact, faith, as this passage teaches, cannot be separated, let alone seen in opposition to good works. We are saved by both; and indeed even though the scripture praises faith a good deal, nowhere does it say that we are saved by faith ALONE as Protestantism teaches.

Neither is the scripture alone is the Rule of Faith. If it were, then it would have said it somewhere. It doesn’t. The Holy Scripture is praised many times, but nowhere does it formulate that unfortunate Protestant dogma. And indeed:

...if thy brother shall offend against thee, go, and rebuke him between thee and him alone. If he shall hear thee, thou shalt gain thy brother.

And if he will not hear thee, take with thee one or two more: that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may stand. And if he will not hear them: tell the church. And if he will not hear the church, let him be to thee as the heathen and publican. Amen I say to you, whatsoever you shall bind upon earth, shall be bound also in heaven; and whatsoever you shall loose upon earth, shall be loosed also in heaven. (Matthew 18:15–18)

Here you go: the Church and not the Scripture is the Rule of Faith; it is the Church that resolves disputes among Christians.

And who rules the Church?

Invisibly, Christ does; He said that the “gates of hell” shall not prevail against “His” Church. Not “your” church, “His” church. (Matthew 16:18).

But visibly, the Church is hierarchical:

Take heed to yourselves, and to the whole flock, wherein the Holy Ghost hath placed you bishops, to rule the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. (Acts 20:28)

ordain priests in every city, as I also appointed thee (Titus 1:5)

Think about it.

Because they don’t have the Catholic Tradition behind their positions.

And that means they don’t have the Apostolic Sucession behind it either.

And THAT means they are not the Church described in Matthew 28:18–20.

This refers to Protestantism.

With Eastern Orthodox, it can be a bit delicate as in the time when schism broke out both sides accused each other for inventing novelties and claimed to be only applying what had always been taught.

Finally, Eastern Orthodox don’t have as good a case as they think, but they have a better one than Protestantism.

That would be like calling XXth C. the Dark Ages just due to 1918 flu pandemic. Or just due to AIDS. Or just due to Ebola. …

If you mean a Catechism which is truly of the Catholic Church, I think any would give this answer:

  • if the stakes are so low that stealing would be a venial sin, taking what you win on gambling is a venial sin;
  • if they are so high that stealoing would be a mortal sin, taking what you win on gambling is a mortal sin.

Note that by gambling you mean not a production or service with risk taking in the part of repayment, but an agreement to hoard money or other things, including future purchases of coke bottles (would not be mortal!) in a lump, and decide that whoever wins on sth truly related just to chance, normally, like the roll of dice or the playing of cards (which means : including where the chance element is most basic, even if there is a tactics element to it too), gets the lump.

If you mean the non-Catholic work termed “Catechism of the Catholic Church”, I think it would say the same, even if I have not checked : it is non-Catholic on other items, such as possibility to prove existence of God or perhaps also literal inerrancy.
