Why "Labyrinth"?

Φιλολoγικά/Philologica: Suppose ONE Single work by GKC had Inspired Lord of the Rings ...? · New blog on the kid: Why "Labyrinth"?

Some flippant guy may pretend David Bowie wanted to cosplay as an actor.

There is something else to it. I saw a video which complained that Labyrinth was basically just yucky, a fifteen year old girl being the object (more than half of the time) of sexual attentions from either David Bowie, sorry, Jareth, or less reputable and delicate males clearly older than herself.

Perhaps there was some point in that. I recall that as the magic spells were spelled out as saying, if she had lost her purity, she would have forgotten about her brother whom she wanted to save, and so, she would have betrayed. I recall rooting for her to keep her purity. In the eighties, this was a time period in which the élite wanted to sensitise people against paedophilia. And perhaps this was the way to do it. Show a peach with a worm in it. Show a fifteen year old pulled between a real duty to care for a brother and a so fake attraction to the lure of sexual maturity in men and sexual pleasures waiting around the corner, never directly imagined, but never quite forgotten.

Make the public squirm at every second when she grows closer to falling for Jareth, make the public cheer when she recalls her purity.

The result of the campaign has ultimately been the opposite of saving brothers. So many fifteen year old girls are now deprived of the right to marry (as happened in France 2006) or to marry next year (as happened in England and Wales following suit after Scotland). Girls are being told it's quite OK to train for motherhood in babysitting, but not OK to actually become mothers. Someone quite as deadly as Jareth is hinted at being, but lots less charming was waiting for babies that were made when mothers that age showed by becoming mothers that they didn't get the memo.

But the film was an actual work of beauty, a real piece of art. Not just because of Jennifer Connelly, but because of the actual story. What inspired it, on the plane of story, as distinct from one very probable message in the context of the age?

We should be startled if we were quietly reading a prosaic modern novel, and somewhere in the middle it turned without warning into a fairy tale. We should be surprised if one of the spinsters in Cranford, after tidily sweeping the room with a broom, were to fly away on a broomstick. Our attention would be arrested if one of Jane Austen's young ladies who had just met a dragoon were to walk a little further and meet a dragon. Yet something very like this extraordinary transition takes place in British history at the end of the purely Roman period. We have to do with rational and almost mechanical accounts of encampment and engineering, of a busy bureaucracy and occasional frontier wars, quite modern in their efficiency and inefficiency; and then all of a sudden we are reading of wandering bells and wizard lances, of wars against men as tall as trees or as short as toadstools. The soldier of civilization is no longer fighting with Goths but with goblins; the land becomes a labyrinth of faërie towns unknown to history; and scholars can suggest but cannot explain how a Roman ruler or a Welsh chieftain towers up in the twilight as the awful and unbegotten Arthur.

This could have been to Labyrinth what the following may have been to The Lord of the Rings:

As we crossed a tilt of the torn heath I saw suddenly between myself and the moon a black shapeless pile higher than a house. The atmosphere was so intense that I really thought of a pile of dead Danes, with some phantom conqueror on the top of it. Fortunately I was crossing these wastes with a friend who knew more history than I; and he told me that this was a barrow older than Alfred, older than the Romans, older perhaps than the Britons; and no man knew whether it was a wall or a trophy or a tomb. Ethandune is still a drifting name; but it gave me a queer emotion to think that, sword in hand, as the Danes poured with the torrents of their blood down to Chippenham, the great king may have lifted up his head and looked at that oppressive shape, suggestive of something and yet suggestive of nothing; may have looked at it as we did, and understood it as little as we.

This also was by Chesterton, it was from the essay Ethandune.

Borrowing from Chesterton is no shame. He made a rich production and he was also able to live off it. But it would perhaps have been better if Sarah had been able to marry someone when returning to the human world, it is a little bleak to imagine the soldier of civilisation who fights goblins (and not goth chicks!) basically fighting to prolong celibacy while already by nature of marriageable age.

And it is perhaps not the utterly best taste to get her exposed to guys she absolutely couldn't marry, since that was not their game, even if it was only for the imagination. On the other hand, for Hollywood, this may have been a very healthy cautionary tale. But that may say more of Hollywood than of the ultimate impact of the film. Can it be redeemed? Perhaps yes.

Kudrowophobe? Phoebephobes? You should have a talk about the term ...

Stan Lee probably neither Free Mason nor Satanist · Kudrowophobe? Phoebephobes? You should have a talk about the term ...

Lisa Kudrow ... I came across a man who could be described as typically phobiac of you or of Winona Ryder. Would you take a talk with Jennifer Aniston on what to call such a man?

No, I didn't talk to him personally. It's just a video on the internet, so I don't even know if it's a man or a woman. Anyway, I am annoyed that such a thing as Lisa-Kudrow-as-Phoebe-phobia should ... btw, I'm waiting for your and Jennifer's verdict on terminology, that's the kind of thing you were discussing on Friends ... infect a man who presumably was trying to do a good turn in fighting against the bad influence of Soros or sth.

I am not against people taking offense at George Soros, I do myself. I am not against taking offense at Hollywood directors dissing Christianity, promoting Aztek idol worship as at least partially a solution ...

Jack frees Will and duels Barbossa, while Elizabeth and Will fight off Barbossa's crew. Barbossa stabs Jack, but the latter is revealed to be under the curse, having taken a piece of gold from the chest of Cortés. Jack then shoots Barbossa, and Will drops both coins into the chest, with his and Jack's blood on them. The curse is lifted, causing Barbossa to die from Jack's gunshot; the rest of Barbossa's crew, realizing that they are no longer immortal, surrender and are arrested.

... as I said, promoting Aztek idol worship as at least part of a solution and lambasting Jerry Bruckheimer (who's German Jewish) for Curse of the Black Pearl.

But someone who was trying to prove Mel Gibson's point for him, somehow missed Jerry Bruckheimer and of all people focussed on naming as many as possible, including you, Lisa Kudrow!

Friends is set in New York. It has six main characters including the bar tender, only two of them are played by Jewish actors and that is about as exotic as using two Italian actors born in France for something set in Marseille!

You are one of them. Now, I might be a kind of Antisemite (a bit like Brother Nathanael, if you know who I mean, but I am not a monk). But I am not a Phoebephobe. If I want to have respect for Christianity, I don't complain about your playing Phoebe, I sign a protest against the Comedian Canteloup who made a gross joke about the Holy Family. I don't care if he's Jewish or not Jewish : the point is he's disrespected Christianity. And probably some Jew had a bit too much of a chuckle at that. And probably (unless you are very unlike your screen character) that Jew is not you. So, why would anyone have any kind of trouble with you having played Phoebe?

I mean, is the guy trying to make Antisemites look bad? Or something? Just when one was kind of coming over the memories of a certain man who should have remained a painter (don't you agree, he was a marvellous painter, nearly better than Chagall?) in comes Mr. ... well, you discuss with Jennifer what to call such a guy ... and makes Antisemites look bad again! Do you think it's a Jewish shill actually trying to?

PS, arguably Verbinski who has collaborated with Bad Religion four times over could be as responsible as Bruckheimer. And Verbinski doesn't seem to be Jewish ... I mean for Black Pearl, responsible for Black Pearl. I need a coffee./HGL

PPS, for other readers, no, the other Jewish actor in Friends is not Jennifer Aniston, she's Greek and god-daughter of Telly Savalas (Aristotelis Savalas). The other Jewish actor is David Schwimmer, who played Dr. Ross Geller./HGL

PPPS - how about Cudroviphobe? Kudrophobe?/HGL

PPPPS - while on topic of Verbinski, Gurewitz is Jewish, but so is Weintraub. I think Karate Kid is as well known if not better than Bad Religion. I also think Karate Kid is not bad culture. Living up to a line like "I am the man who will fight for your honour" is hard, but attacking it as immoral is impossible./HGL

Was Rowling Thinking of John Todd?

You know, I never read Rowling.

An issue or two of Mitteilungsblatt des deustchen Distrikts der Priesterbruderschaft Sankt Pius X (or possibly even three or four issues, it was some time ago) warned me against those particular books.

But I nevertheless was right now looking into a series of different looks between book illustrations (or descriptions) and the film actors.

I will not meddle with the copyright to images of "Sirius Black", but you can look him up. I mean the actor in the films, not the paper illustration.*

Here is another image** which sprang immediately to my mind:

On Hollywood Actors and Such Losing Favour with Hollywood

  • Hollywood won't cast Elisha Cuthbert any more, two of her films flopped.

  • Hollywood won't cast Taylor Lautner any more, Twilight hype died.

  • Hollywood won't cast Tom Welling any more, he was too busy with Smallville. He missed out on acting beside the TV series.

  • Hollywood won't cast Ashley Greene, the film which was supposed to kickstart her carreer didn't give all of the budget back.

  • Hollywood won't cast Reed any more, because she has sth other to do, apparently.

The last reason seems fairly legitimate. But the rest of the reasons for the rest of the actors, that is a kind of judgemental and shall we say superstitious attitude one could well do without in work, including media work, outside Hollywood. And perhaps inside Hollywood too.

A film which flops at box office can give returns later on video. Even if it didn't give all the budget back.

An actor with little experience can have roles that are simple enough. There is a story by Chesterton about a theatre company and an actress who is upset because she doesn't get the right role. An outsider can't understand that, he thinks she got the most attractive one - er no, says Father Brown, she got a role which was an insult to her capacity as an actress!

And if Twilight hype has died (perhaps a very good thing per se), the people who were involved might at last be forgiven that and allowed to do sth better!

Credits to the site Nikki Swift for several stories I browsed. Not sure some might not have been from Zergnet, too.

More credits, after above, to Atlas Obscura article here:

Keeping the Art of Knot Tying Alive
A guild of knotters won't let this historic craft die.
by Eric Grundhauser February 23, 2017
http://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/knots-guild-igkt-craft-art-maritime

It set me zapping between the articles, but it is a good story in itself.

Some members of the Guild prefer to focus on the related craft of rope-making, which in and of itself is a very particular art. Byfleet told us that he knows of Guild members whose focus is on church bell ropes, which need to be made in such a way that they stretch when pulled, making the sound of the bell less harsh and more musical.

Sam Gamgee would second that. So would his author John Ronald, I suppose!

But back to the actors. If Hollywood won't hire them, they can band together to make a cinema in some other studio and be off Hollywood managers. If they like. And if nobody stops them.

And a discredit to Grammarly which has been installed in Nanterre University Library. "Might at last" is underlined red to get me writing "might, at last," even while I am using "at last" more as an adverb to might than as an interrupter, "knotters" and "roles" are underlined with suggestions I might mean "knitters" and "rules", no, as human readers of this post can imagine, and especially "knotters" was a word I had not even chosen myself, had it been a misspelling. But one more thing. I was in Sweden taught British spelling, and Grammarly being an American spellcheck, it ticks off British spellings as faulty. It underlined "theatre" with the suggestion "theater". To me "teater" is Swedish, "Theater" is German. And "theater" would be my respelling of Swedish as per my personal rule of respecting loan giving languages more than Swedish standard spelling. The "th" goes back to Greek θ. If I want English, it is, as I learned it in school, theatre. And the thing can't be turned off either. It just even misanalysed part of my quote. Bell belongs to "sound of the bell" and less to "less harsh". Nevertheless, a non-extant phrase "bell less" was underlined suggesting "bell-less". Churches fortunately aren't exactly that, they have not recently gone through the brutal Reformation of Gustav Wasa!

PS, Hollywood sth to go with Judaism? See here:

According to Shahak, classical Judaism is inspired by the image of Sparta as it appears in Plato's Laws 942. Judaism adopted the objectives Plato described in the following passage. (Shahak, p.13)

The principal thing is that no one, man or woman, should ever be without an officer set over him, and that no one should get the mental habit of taking any step, whether in earnest or in jest, on his individual responsibility. In peace as in war, he must always live with his eyes on his superior officer...In a word, we must train the mind to not even consider acting as an individual or know how to do it.

Shahak says the words "rabbi" and "officer" are interchangeable. In Communism, the sons of rabbis built a new worldly religion that mirrored the fanaticism and oppression of classical Judaism.
