Une histoire et les voyages de Christophe Colomb (The Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus), 1828
Les Compagnons de Colomb (Voyages and Discoveries of the Companions of Columbus), 1831

Right when I left the cyber and went to the library, where I can't answer, Alex Yordanov made these points:

And why are you telling me this?!? A lot of fictional stories are taken as history, specifically atheist history like the baby crusades. Just saying, it's meant to be history, is ...

That's completely different text. You made the claim that,, Fictional writing doesn't explain institutions ", which I used this comment to say that you are wrong. I...

Ah, why didn't he say so earlier.

No, I didn't make the claim that fictional writing doesn't explain institutions. I made the claim that fictional stories don't explain real institutions. As an example, Spiderman features a newspaper called The Daily Bugle. If Spiderman had instead had Peter Parker as journalist on New York Times or New York Herald Tribune, Spiderman would have had to deal with real life owners and real life famous journalists on these papers. In 1941, or 1963, instead of J. Jonah Jameson, one would have had to deal with James Reston:

After working briefly for the Springfield, Ohio, Daily News, he joined the Associated Press in 1934. He moved to the London bureau of The New York Times in 1939, but returned to New York in 1940.

In 1942, he took a leave of absence to establish a U.S. Office of War Information in London. In 1945, following the end of World War II, he rejoined The New York Times as a national correspondent in Washington, D.C..

In 1948, he was appointed diplomatic correspondent.[5] In 1953, he became bureau chief and columnist.

Reston served as associate editor of The New York Times from 1964 to 1968, executive editor from 1968 to 1969, and vice president from 1969 to 1974. He wrote a nationally syndicated column from 1974 until 1987, when he became a senior columnist. During the Nixon administration, he was on U.S. president Richard Nixon's list of political opponents

Or with Ogden Mills Reid, Whitelaw Reid (one of his sons), Ogden Reid / Ogden Rogers Reid (who was also in the House of Representatives and an Ambassador to Israel), and John Hay Whitney (an Ambassador to the UK).

Of course the fictional writing in Spiderman could have included and explained either of these papers, but as their real story was already well established, Marvel Comics couldn't have replaced that real story with a fictional one. They would have had to give the real story or an approximation, or a conspiracy theory for which the real story could be presented as a front, credibly, they couldn't just make up a fictional story instead of the real one.

So, even in a fictional writing, there would be no fictional story to explain the real institutions of New York Times or New York Herald Tribune.

Now, Alex Yordanov (wonder if he's a Bulgarian politician*) made two claims that are visible in this preview. By the way, if he is that politician, I resent a man of 74 talking down to a man of 57 with comments like "your childish game" and things. I also find it less appropriate in a debate that cares for precise nuance, as mine does, to get intercepted by someone who is obviously using google translate.** Or not. I tried to translate and backtranslate, didn't give his resumé, so I'll assume he's simply resuming what he thought I meant. But here are the claims:

1) I'm wrong that fictional writing does not explain institutions (I presume he means real ones), no example given.
2) A lot of fictional stories are taken as history, example given the Children's Crusade.***

Now, it would seem the Children's Crusade is not actually a fiction. It may be fake news, or history that got distorted, according to the Dutch scholar Peter Raedts, but it isn't a fictional story that was then mistaken as a true history. If anything other than true history, it is a distortion of real history, and I never claimed real history never gets distorted.

The event is purported to take place in 1212, and the sources are, by Peter Raedts divided into:

  1. Contemporary sources written by 1220;
  2. Sources written between 1220 and 1250 (the authors could have been alive at the time of the crusade but wrote their memories down later);
  3. Sources written after 1250 by authors who received their information second or third hand.

This obviously means, even according to an extreme sceptic of the story, there were contemporary sources. In other words, it is not fiction. After Peter Raedts one scholar came forward with this claim:

At least one source, that of a man simply known as Otto the last puer, was written by an individual who claimed to have participated in the Children's Crusade.

Sourced: Dickson, Gary (2008). Children's Crusade: Medieval History, Modern Mythistory

I don't know if Otto ultimus puer came forward before or after 1250, but obviously even if he had come out after 1250, given he was child or young teen in 1212, he could have been one participant who was still alive.

So, no, the example doesn't work. The Children's Crusade isn't a fictional story that got taken for real history, and the origin is not actually atheists trying to bash Medieval Christendom. Now, back to Peter Raedts:

It is only in the later non-authoritative narratives that a "children's crusade" is implied by such authors as Vincent of Beauvais, Roger Bacon, Thomas of Cantimpré, Matthew Paris and many others.

Vincent of Beauvais died in 1264. Even if his account is after 1250, he was a contemporary. And Beauvais and Cloyes, where Stephen of Cloyes started out, are both just a little further off from Paris than suburbs, Cloyes not too far from Orléans. Thomas of Cantimpré was about the same age as Stephen of Cloyes, but he was in Belgium. Cambrai is to Cologne, where Nicholas started a thing, a bit over 300 km, while Beavais is to Cloyes a little less than 200 on the shortest route. Matthew Paris, again, contemporary. Died 1259. Peter Raedt writing in 1977 wanted us to believe they understood an event of 1212 less well than he writing centuries later.

No, the Children's Crusade is not fiction, even if it has been abused by Atheists and even if some very legitimately wanting to counter them have claimed it is fiction.

His other point, I can only guess what institutions he meant. As said, I couldn't read his entire comment.

If he's a Christian, he might not mean the Catholic Church and Gospels + Acts, as an Atheist would. But he could mean things like Book of Mormon, Golden Plates, Rome founded by Romulus. I'll briefly deal with each.

The Book of Mormon is no more an origin story for the Mormon Church than the Gospels are. Mormons may claim both American Christianity up to Moroni and Apostolic Christianity as remote past history, but they do not claim either as direct origin contemporary to the start of the Church. By origin story of Mormons, I mean Joseph Smith, his claim to receive visions, his claim to receive Golden Plates.

Now Golden Plates. The claim could be totally fraudulent, it could also be demonic, it is nevertheless part of the real story of the origin of Mormons that the claim was at least made.

And Rome founded by Romulus, as a Catholic Christian, I must insist, in respect for St. Augustine and the Martyrology for Christmas Day:

Hebdomada sexagesima quinta, juxta Danielis prophetiam; Olympiade centesima nonagesima quarta; ab urbe Roma condita, anno septingentesimo quinquagesimo secundo; anno Imperii Octaviani Augusti quadragesimo secundo

And City of God, book III, chapter 3:°

There is no ground, then, for representing the gods (by whom, as they say, that empire stood, though they are proved to have been conquered by the Greeks) as being enraged at the Trojan perjury. Neither, as others again plead in their defense, was it indignation at the adultery of Paris that caused them to withdraw their protection from Troy. For their habit is to be instigators and instructors in vice, not its avengers. "The city of Rome," says Sallust, "was first built and inhabited, as I have heard, by the Trojans, who, flying their country, under the conduct of Æneas, wandered about without making any settlement." If, then, the gods were of opinion that the adultery of Paris should be punished, it was chiefly the Romans, or at least the Romans also, who should have suffered; for the adultery was brought about by Æneas' mother. But how could they hate in Paris a crime which they made no objection to in their own sister Venus, who (not to mention any other instance) committed adultery with Anchises, and so became the mother of Æneas? Is it because in the one case Menelaus was aggrieved, while in the other Vulcan connived at the crime? For the gods, I fancy, are so little jealous of their wives, that they make no scruple of sharing them with men. But perhaps I may be suspected of turning the myths into ridicule, and not handling so weighty a subject with sufficient gravity. Well, then, let us say that Æneas is not the son of Venus. I am willing to admit it; but is Romulus any more the son of Mars? For why not the one as well as the other? Or is it lawful for gods to have intercourse with women, unlawful for men to have intercourse with goddesses? A hard, or rather an incredible condition, that what was allowed to Mars by the law of Venus, should not be allowed to Venus herself by her own law. However, both cases have the authority of Rome; for Cæsar in modern times believed no less that he was descended from Venus, than the ancient Romulus believed himself the son of Mars.

Let me highlight the last sentence:

However, both cases have the authority of Rome; for Cæsar in modern times believed no less that he was descended from Venus, than the ancient Romulus believed himself the son of Mars.

In other words, it's not Patristic tradition to doubt Rome was founded by Romulus.

PS, excuse an oversight, here is the article on Children's Crusade:

PPS, next day I'm able to access the full comments:

That's completely different text. You made the claim that,, Fictional writing doesn't explain institutions ", which I used this comment to say that you are wrong. I also said in my previous comment that CONTEXT IS VERY IMPORTANT. You did something I like to call , target change. We know Joseph Smith existed since there are historical records of him outside the Book of Mormon, just like there are outside records confirming the Bible. If anything Joseph Smith not understanding events of which he is outside observer as much as anyone else, (a lot of people didn't know the official date of Independence) , proves he wasn't fictional character, we never made claim it PROVES HIS WORD. You are attacking a claim we never made. Testify himself saying multiple times in the video ,, That's not prove", the video never was trying to prove anything, it was answering why the Spiderman falacy was illigatimate.

1) I was not attacking the idea that historicity proves the divinity of Jesus, since I didn't find it, I was just distinguishing what a good grasp on my answer to the Spiderman fallacy can and can't establish, historicity in a general sense, yes, inerrancy or divinity, no.
2) The thing is, Joseph Smith is part of the Mormon account of how the Mormon Church as such, as distinct from the Apostolic Church and the supposed American covenant people, came about. The content of Book of Mormon is irrelevant, like the Gospels, because it's not about immediate origins, but about supposed predecessors in the far off past. Mormons are as restorationist about Nephite Church as they are about the Apostolic Church, affirming unbroken continuity with neither.

And why are you telling me this?!? A lot of fictional stories are taken as history, specifically atheist history like the baby crusades. Just saying, it's meant to be history, is unnecessary to say , It's obvious, but I guess pseudo-intellectuals with nothing important to say must always point obvious factor we all see . The Baby crusades is also meant to be taken as history, does this give it any credit.

Again missing a distinction of mine. Fiction is in fact not meant to be taken as history. Real history is, fake history is, fiction isn't.

Children's Crusade may or may not involve a gross misunderstanding, but is not even fake history, it's real history.

Then there is "taken as history by the first [known] audience." If the first known audience about the Children's Crusade had been pupils in Communist Bulgarian schools, the fact it was taken as history would not have mattered, it would not have made any argument for the history being real. But when the thing taken as history is either close to (purported) events or the origin story of the audience taking it for history, when that audience is a community, it matters. Vincent of Beauvais was close enough in time for fake history to be a tour de force needing explanation in the case of the Children's Crusade. Earliest known late OT readers and commenters on Genesis viewed this as the origin of the people which from Exodus became their own. Gospels fit both criteria where "meant as history" makes "fake history" hard to argue. Book of Mormon fits neither./HGL

https://fr.quora.com/Avez-vous-d%C3%A9j%C3%A0-pens%C3%A9-%C3%A0-la-civilisation-qui-existait-avant-le-d%C3%A9luge/answer/Michel-H%C3%A9via

Year of the World 1656, Year before Christ 2348." Ou 2348 av. J.-Chr.

Ounas
https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ounas

1. The first man (or god) in Egypt is Hephaestus, who is also renowned among the Egyptians as the discoverer of fire. His son, Helios (the Sun), was succeeded by Sôsis; then follow, in turn, Cronos, Osiris, Typhon, brother of Osiris, and lastly Orus, son of Osiris and Isis. These were the first to hold sway in Egypt. Thereafter, the kingship passed from one to another in unbroken succession down to Bydis (Bites) through 13,900 years. The year I take, however, to be a lunar one, consisting, that is, of 30 days: what we now call a month the Egyptians used formerly to style a year.

2. After the Gods, Demigods reigned for 1255 years, and again another line of kings held sway for 1817 years: then came thirty more kings of Memphis, reigning for 1790 years; and then again ten kings of This, reigning for 350 years.

3. There followed the rule of Spirits of the Dead and Demigods, for 5813 years.

4. The total [of the last five groups] amounts to 11,000 years, these however being lunar periods, or months. But, in truth, the whole rule of which the Egyptians tell — the rule of Gods, Demigods, and Spirits of the Dead — is reckoned to have comprised in all 24,900 lunar years, which make 2206 solar years.

Book I | Fr. 1 (from the Armenian Version of Eusebius, Chronica). Dynasties of Gods, Demigods, and Spirits of the Dead.
https://penelope.uchicago.edu/Thayer/E/Roman/Texts/Manetho/History_of_Egypt/1*.html

  • des "grands savants" (comme Newton) l'ont dit ;

L'extrait
du dialogue tel quel :

Moi
Well, learn up on how we know historic facts further back than the last few generations and specifically further back than the printing press.

L'autre
If historians dealt only in facts, then we would all be using the same history books. While books would be read and studied at the appropriate level and location, they would not differ from one country to another. i.e. in science, we learn that the Sun is at the center of our Solar System, no matter what the catholics proclaimed for centuries after it was known. In science, we understand that new data could upend that knowledge, no matter how unlikely. Now you are trying to convince me that "we" "know" history"? We except that many people and places have existed, but of those, how many of those is the evidence rather weak?

Moi
"If historians dealt only in facts, then we would all be using the same history books."

They certainly deal also with analyses, and emphasis. No one disputes Wellington and Blücher between them beat Napoleon at Waterloo, but Prussians and English traditionally differ on who of the two was most important.

"i.e. in science, we learn that the Sun is at the center of our Solar System, no matter what the catholics proclaimed for centuries after it was known."

Oh dear ... it's "known" because all countries these days have text books that say so ... as with historic facts, I'd encourage you to look out for how something is supposed to be known. In history you are over-sceptic, in natural sciences you are over-dogmatic, how about getting into the gritty nitty stuff of how one deals with evidence?

"In science, we understand that new data could upend that knowledge, no matter how unlikely."

In the case of Heliocentrism, I think recalling some old data is pretty sufficient. Take a day off this debate, and then get back on how you would prove Heliocentrism to a Theist who had never heard of it, but who had heard of God turning the visible universe around us each day and of angels moving the single celestial bodies in it, apart from the daily motion.

L'autre
"Take a day off this debate, and then get back on how you would prove Heliocentrism to a Theist..."

It seems that Aristarchus of Samos figured it out in the 3rd BCE using math and observations. Getting many theists to listen to science is beyond me.

Moi
"It seems that Aristarchus of Samos figured it out in the 3rd BCE using math and observations."

And Ptolemy who knew of him wasn't convinced?

"Getting many theists to listen to science is beyond me."

You are treating science as a religion. And Theism as a heresy. How about treating Theism and Atheism as two explanatory paradigms and Heliocentrism and Geocentrism as two astronomic ones?

(3 ans 1/4). Allemand un an mi-temps = 1/2 an plein temps (3 ans 3/4).

Imposable.

A Real Modern Counterpart of Savonarola?

I was reading up on the Catholic Encyclopedia.

Here is a passage which reminds me of what I already knew of another clergymen, when joining his followers, about two decades ago:

These efforts of Savonarola brought him into conflict with Alexander VI. The pope, like all Italian princes and cities, with the exception of Florence, was an opponent of the French policy. Moreover, Charles VIII had often threatened him with the calling of a reform council in opposition to him. This led Alexander VI to regard all the more dubiously the support that Florence under the influence of Savonarola gave the French king. Furthermore the Dominican preacher spoke with increasing violence against the pope and the Curia. On 25 July, 1495, a papal Brief commanded Savonarola in virtue of holy obedience to come to Rome and defend himself on the score of the prophecies attributed to him. Savonarola excused himself on the plea of impaired health and of the dangers threatening him. By a further Brief of 8 September the Dominican was forbidden to preach, and the monastery of San Marco was restored to the Lombard Congregation. In his reply of 29 September, Savonarola sought to justify himself, and declared that, as regards his teaching, he had always submitted to the judgment of the Church. In a new papal Brief of 16 October written with great moderation the union of the monastery of San Marco with the Lombard Congregation was withdrawn, Savanarola's conduct was judged mildly, but the prohibition to preach, until his vindication at Rome, was maintained.

In the meantime Savonarola had again entered the pulpit on 11 October in order to rouse the Florentines against Pietro de Medici and on 11 February the Signoria of Florence actually commanded the Dominican to preach again. Savonarola now resumed his sermons on 17 February and was thus unjustifiably disobedient to ecclesiastical authority. In these Lenten sermons he violently lashed the crimes of Rome thereby increasing the passionate excitement at Florence. A schism threatened and the pope was again forced to interpose. On 7 November, 1496, the Dominican monasteries of Rome and Tuscany were formed into a new congregation, the first vicar of which was Cardinal Caraffa. Even then Savonarola refused obedience and again during the Lenten season of 1497 preached with uncontrolled violence against the Church in Rome. On 12 May, 1497, he was excommunicated. Under the date of 19 June he published a letter "against the excommunication" as being fraudulently obtained and sought to show that the judgment against him was null and void. The Florentine ambassadors at Rome probably hoped to prevent any further measures on the part of the pope, but their hopes were unfounded, especially as Savonarola became more defiant. Notwithstanding his excommunication he celebrated Mass on Christmas Day and distributed Holy Communion. Moreover, disregarding an archiepiscopal edict, he began again on 11 February, 1498, to preach at the Cathedral and to demonstrate that the sentences against him were void ...

Have we seen any Catholic recently try to show that certain disciplinary measures against him were void the last decades? 1988?

And here is a passage which reminds me of what I have painfully found out later:

A brotherhood founded by Savonarola for young people encouraged a pious, Christian life among its members. Sundays some of this brotherhood went about from house to house and along the streets to take away dice and cards from the citizens, to exhort luxuriously dressed married and single women to lay aside frivolous ornament. Thus there arose an actual police for regulating morality, which also carried on its work by the objectionable methods of spying and denunciation. The principles of the severe judge of morals were carried out in practical life in too extreme a manner. Success made Savonarola, whose speech in his sermons was often recklessly passionate, more and more daring.

My experience of St Nicolas du Chardonnet is precisely this:

  • they have tried to regulate my life into non-writing;
  • they are severe judges of what I am doing as a homeless man or have been so, at least too severe to have allowed me an income as a writer unless I first make penance for my "faults" as a homeless man;
  • and the young do include some brigades which among other things have picked away cardboards with my blogs so as to avoid Church goers from reading the URL's on the cardboards and thus being able to read my blogs.
  • and they seem connected to the blog "La Question", where not just sedevacantism, but also reading Tolkien ... sorry, checked that, wrong ... well sedevacantism and modern pagan lifestyles at any rate are being rejected - and where Saint Thomas is considered to have made an ontological rather than "mythological" approach, because (?) he had to respect the laws of being.

This latter point merits consideration.

What exact kind of mythological approach is it which goes against the laws of being? That of Manichaeans and Gnostics where souls are trapped in bodies by the workings of a lower god (Gnosticism) or of a devil (Manichaeanism) who did create bodies, not souls, after God or "the good god" or whatever had created "souls, not bodies" - sure, that at least goes against such laws of being that the soul is the form of the body or that evil has no substance in itself and material substance as such cannot be evil.

But "mythological approach" is really a rubber term. It is very elastic. If I agree with Saint Thomas that the celestial bodies (he doesn't mention sun or moon or planets or fix stars separately, just celestial bodies) are directed by angelic beings (but not ensouled, P1, Q70, A3), that sun worshippers are "confusing a well clad valet" (giving valet the full value of a creature endowed with conscience ceremoniously serving someone higher, in this case serving God, quote is from his popular sermon on the Creed) with the King whom the valet serves (that King being God) - is my approach ontological or mythoogical?

Obviously, one can say it is not quite purely ontological, since I am not giving a detailed reasoning of why the Sun has to be itself not ensouled (the ontological reasoning given by St Thomas in P1, Q70, A3 is actually contradicted by later discoveries).

Obviously, one can say that it is a mythological approach in the sense that Pagan mythologies tend to agree with St Thomas on visible Sun being moved by someone else (who is really someonbe), though they agree more with Riccioli than with St Thomas.

To St Thomas, the daily motion has a westward component entirely taken care of by God (which is the basis of Prima Via in its most classic form, in Summa Contra Gentes, also resumed in P1, Q2, A3, first section after the brief intro), (which Riccioli denied, thereby preferring the Cartesian and Anselmian proof over the Thomist one), while the angel of each body only takes care of the smaller motions, like the yearly motion eastward, much slower than the daily one westward, for the Sun, or the monthly motion eastward, also slower than the daily motion westward, of the Moon.

To Riccioli, as to Pagan mythologies, as to Book of Henoch (where extant state of astronomical book seems incorrect about length of year, one reason not to have it in canon), the angelic movers take care of all the westward movement concretely. God is not moving Sun and Moon westward, they are moving westward as moved by angels, but God has just directed the movements in good synchronisation, in His instructions to these angels.

So, let us hope that the things like this quote are not directed at my view of astronomy:

Within parentheses is given the name (Saint Thomas d’Aquin). To someone not familiar with Saint Thomas, it would even seem as if it were a quote from Saint Thomas, while probably it rather is about him. Perhaps by Garrigou-Lagrange, but

Actually, I did find one work of Savonarola placed on the index:

In the beginning Savonarola was filled with zeal, piety, and self-sacrifice for the regeneration of religious life. He was led to offend against these virtues by his fanaticism, obstinacy, and disobedience. He was not a heretic in matters of faith. The erection of his statue at the foot of Luther's monument at Worms as a reputed "forerunner of the Reformation" is entirely unwarranted. Among his writings mention should be made of: "Triumphus Crucis de fidei veritate" (Florence, 1497), his chief work, an apology for Christianity; "Compendium revelationum" (Florence, 1495); "Scelta di prediche e scritti", ed. Villari Casanova (Florence, 1898); "Trattato circa il Reggimento di Firenze", ed. Rians (Florence, 1848); further letters edited by Marchese in the "Archivio. storico italiano", App. XIII (1850); poems edited by Rians (Florence, 1847). The "Dialogo della verita" (1497) and fifteen sermons were placed later on the Index.

But the passage here alluded to in the Catholic Encyclopedia also states "He was not a heretic in matters of faith."

And I think that moderate "Obedience Absolutifiers", moderate "Half Conservatives" and so on, have said exactly the same thing about Monseigneur Lefebvre.

If you think Marcel Lefebvre was a Saint, remember Saint Philip Neri considered Savonarola a Saint.

If you think it wrong not to canonise him, remember Savonarola is not canonised.

For both, as far as I know, it seems that miracles are lacking.

Citing Saint Nicolas du Chardonnet as a miracle is like citing the Florence under Savonarola as a miracle which is like citing Vatican II as a miracle.

Movements of great zeal which are not against the faith (debatable about certain texts of Vatican II, but at least arguable about the general impression some got of it) but neither absolutely essential to it cannot be considered uncontestable miracles in the sense like the curing of a leper is incontestably a miracle.

As for working miracles, it is unclear if the suggestion that Savonarola should walk on coals was made as a proposal of a miracle or of an ordeal.

Walking on coals is per se not always miraculous, even with naked feet without getting hurt. An atheist scientist (I think a Swede) has performed the "miracle" and said why it worked.

Walking on coals as a kind of appeal to God's judgement is an ordeal. And Judgement by Ordeals were prohibited by the IV Lateran council.

As a Dominican, Savonarola probably knew the latter very well. If he was a prophet, he would have known that walking on coals need not be a miracle. Hence, one cannot consider his refusal to walk on coals as either a refusal to prove his prophecy by miracle or a refusal to be judged by the Church. This should be kept in mind when reading how he was trapped:

In Florence itself the opposition to Savonarola grew more powerful, and an adversary from the Franciscan Order offered to undergo the ordeal by fire in order to prove him in error. Savonarola himself did not want to take up the challenge, but some of his ardent adherents among the Dominicans declared themselves ready for it. The ordeal for both sides was to take place on 7 April, 1498, before a large public gathering. Everything was ready for the test, but it did not take place. The people now turned against Savonarola. There were outbreaks and the monastery of San Marco was attacked; Savonarola and a fellow-member of the order, Domenico da Pescia, were taken prisoners. The papal delegates, the general of the Dominicans and the Bishop of Ilerda were sent to Florence to attend the trial. The official proceedings, which were, however, falsified by the notary, still exist. The captured monks were tortured; Savonarola's following in the city fell away. On 22 May, 1498, Savonarola and two other members of the order were condemned to death "on account of the enormous crimes of which they had been convicted". They were hanged on 23 May and their bodies burned.

I was going to say, see above, that La Question had condemned reading Tolkien. False. It was actually another site, this one sedevacantist, which had done so.

Namely very briefly under the heading Esotérisme – occultisme. Here we have a real case for a Sedevacantist being in agreement with Savonarola.

If you scroll down to the subheading Néo-paganisme ... are cited:

Then is further cited as example:

Considering Owen Barfield or Charles Williams as de facto initiates (as per following) is not quite controversial. Owen Barfield Junior (grandson of the Inkling) has taken some distance from that side of his grandfather.

But the problem is when Inklings as such are considered to be initiates. And therefore Narnia chronicles considered as "filled with paganism" (in a very obvious sense, yes), "magic" (this is debatable), "and idolatry" (only if, contrary to authors explicit explanations, you stubbornly consider Aslan as non-Christ and therefore worshipped "instead of Christ" - you can say the portrait was not quite correct, as you can say with the Crucifix speaking to Don Camillo, also intended as a portrait of Christ, but you can't say it really means some other person). Bacchus is there and not adored. River gods are there and not adored. The faun who lamented being damned because pagans adored his likes (see St Jerome's life of St Anthony) would have rejoiced for not being adored by any pagans in Narnia. Tash is indeed an idol and indeed adored - but by the Calormenes, which are intended to be seen as precisely Pagans.

Lord of the Rings is described as "a Satanic fable" (a description better suited for fables meant to be believed, like Manichaean cosmogony or like Evolution with Big Bang, or for fables with a content proning rather than just describing in warning terms the Satanic), "filled with magic" (depends on what is meant by that term) "idolatry" (not by the good guys : the worship at Meneltarma is meant as being a worship of the true one God, having occurred in a fictive pre-Christian age, while Sauron's perversion of it is precisely denounced as "heathen" - an adjective again used in Lord of the Rings, I was here looking at prequel Akallabeth, but again used for describing worship of entities proning despair or even for the despair of those worshipping such entities), "and esoteric symbolism" (which is per se not denounced by either Deuteronomy 18, 10-12 or V Lateran Council, Session 9).

Both works may be popular among neopagans, but so is wine and cheese! Tell a Frenchman he is committing neopagan idolatry each time he is drinking wine with his cheese plate and see how he reacts! And Inklings were precisely a literary and not precisely an esoteric circle. One reason I would want John Todd out of psychiatry if still alive, is so he can be cross examined about what I consider to be false witness. Literary means literary : each meeting a member or invited person reads a chapter then they discuss if it was enjoyable and if it was well written. Runes were, contrary to what some accusers of Tolkien are saying, a very commonplace knowledge among people who were studying the past of the English and Norse Middle Ages, especially early Middle Ages.

And citing the Jerusalem Bible, well, Tolkien did the book of Jonah into English and I don't think any of his notes to it (if any) was modernist. Member of Vatican II Sect? How many English Catholics were NOT accepting Paul VI as Pope back in 1973? Indeed, for laymen, being Evolutionist and Heliocentric would for that generation clearly be excusable. For priests or especially bishops, not so if giving definite assent, as mentioned about Pacelli/Pius XII in relation to his allocution from 65 years ago, as it will be in one week.

If you cite Joaquín Sáenz y Arriaga S.J., he was neither English (Tolkien's own country), nor even Spanish (a country he had visited and loved), he was Mexican. He can have become noted in 1972 when excommunicated by the Vatican II Sect, but that was the year before Tolkien died. And he had worldly worries. But even very much more devout Catholics dying in England in 1973 would hardly have given Sedevacantism a second thought.

And if you say that a Catholic has no business having wordly worries at all, well, then you are the kind of Sedevacantist who really is like Savonarola. To the Church in general, there is such a thing as bearing 30-fold fruit. JRRT could have been ultimately bearing 60-fold, since he died a widower.

1787
3 ... 41/43 non
nombre premier

1791
:3=597
:3=199
199, nombre premier? Oui, j'ai vérifié!

Les deux autour de ça, donc?

1786
893=19*47

1792
896
448
224
112
56
28
14
7

Loi du 22 floréal an VI

...

The Jourdan Law of 1798 (French: loi Jourdan) effectively institutionalised conscription in Revolutionary France, which began with the levée en masse.

It stipulated that all single and childless men between the ages of 20 and 25 were liable for military service.

Exemptions existed however for the clergy, industrial workers essential for the war-effort, students from selected Grandes écoles, and public office holders.

The law discriminated against the poor and large peasant population through the legally sanctioned practice of 'replacement', which allowed anyone who was able, to purchase someone to enlist in their place.

It was named for the French General Jean-Baptiste Jourdan.

The Queen of Sheba as Queen of the South?

I think this is a part of Arabian Peninsula. I also think the King of the South mentioned in Daniel is on stage.

I may be wrong, I am not a prophet, and I am basing the part about 444 being the number of the King of the South on someone else who also is not a Biblical Prophet. William Tapley likes to call himself "third eagle of the apocalypse" and "co-prophet of the end-times", but he does not claim to be an actual prophet, and he does claim to be studying prophecy as a scholar, partly in the light of unfolding events, as they fit ancient prophecy.

Now, he believes Barack Obama is NOT the Antichrist or King of the North, because he believes Barack Obama can be identified as King of the South. However, he also takes a hint from number of verses on diverse themes in both Daniel and Matthew 24 as indicating that the number of the King of the South is 444. And he ties this with Obama being the 44th President of the USA.

I think we have a better candidate for the King of the South. Look at SALMAN, in the Latin transcription, and the ASCII Code values.

The reason I am saying this is that the Queen of Shebah needs not be the Pharao Hatshepsut. Whether they were contemporary or not, that is not my concern. Velikovsky seems to have identified them on the basis of them being contemporaneous and of her apparently having power also over ... sth South of Egypt, identifiable, loosely, as Ethiopia, even if the Meroë capital back then is not identical to the Aksum capital where Neguses were claiming to descend from Menelik, son of King Solomon and Queen of Sheba.

The fact is, Ethiopia (not necessarily same frontiers as either today's Ethiopia, or even including Erythrea) and Arabia had a very lively exchange even later. The century before Mohammed, South Arabia (the presumable power basis of Queen of Sheba) was divided between three religions, the star worship which centered on idolatrous Mecca (even Mohammedans think it was idolatrous before Mohammed changed that), the Judaism which was shared with Ethiopian Falasha Judaism, and the Christianity which was very clearly Ethiopian Christianity, depending on the Patriarch of Ethiopia who in his turn depended on the Pope of Alexandria, Monophysite lineage. The Wars between Jews and Christians in Ethiopia (where Christians to this day have bad memoraies of the Falasha Queen Judith) had spread to the Southern Part of Arabian Peninsula. Obviously, that may have contributed to Mohammed, while rejecting idolatry per se, being edgy about taking sides by becoming either a Jew or a Christian. After which, he "saw the angel Jibreel" and founded a new religion.

Not quite unlike a Joseph Smith who was also edgy about chosing between Presbyterians and Methodists, Baptists and whatever not, simply because the Protestant religious map of US was such a complete map of division. After which he in his turn "saw the angel Moroni" and even "the Trinity" (no, I don't think he really saw the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost, I think someone was posing, as with Moroni, as with Jibreel).

How could this come up?

Obviously, I agree with Velikovsky that the Hyksos were Amalekites. But this does not make me a disciple of Velikovsky, and having to reject, with some probability at least, the identification of Queen of Sheba with Hatshepsut does not in the least make me regret identifying Hyksos with Amalekites taking Egypt after the Exodus. You see, I am NOT treating Velikovsky as "a prophet" and thus "either a true prophet" (if everything he says is true) "or a false prophet" (if anything he says is false, in which case the rest must be rejected too and cannot stand as prophecy). I am treating him as a scholar, whose idea has been taken up by another scholar.

And I read and agreed with that other scholar and still do.

This does not mean I reject the claim of the Kings of Aksum to descend from Menelik and of this Menelik having been the Son of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. His mother need not have been a Queen of all Ethiopia (and I am not sure Hatshepsut reigned over Ethiopia either, not due to uncertainty in general of subject, but only due to my personal ignorance of it), supposing that Queen of Sheba was NOT Hatshepsut (though if she was Candace of Meroë, she might have ruled Sheba or Sabaea too), supposing she was not even in any other way a Candace of Ethiopia, that she was JUST the Queen of Sheba. It does not follow that the claim of the Menelik line is false. Very easily, if power structures in those areas were anything like those of Medieval Europe, i e Feudal, a Queen of Sabaea (which may have been not today's Yemen only, which may have extended into today's Saudi Arabia, see the gematria on SALMAN), may have also been owning a fief in Aksum under Meroë. And later Meroë lost power and Aksum rose to be the Imperial city of the Negus.

However, I am writing this in answer to an article where this claim of Velikovsky about Hatshepsut was discussed. It takes up a line of thought which I find worth answering.

Herodotus estimated that Homer lived 400 years before his own time, which would place Homer at around 850 BC. The consensus is that the Iliad and the Odyssey date from around the 8th century BC. Over the past few decades, some scholars have argued for a 7th century BC date. Taplin believes that the conclusion of modern researchers is that Homer dates to 750 to 650 BC. Solomon, by comparison, is securely dated to the 10th century BC, along with the Queen of Sheba. With the consensus ruling that Homer is 8th century or later, the mathematics of Homer being a near contemporary of Solomon are wrong. The QSQE assumed that Herodotus was correct about Homer’s placement in the historical timeline, but Herodotus has been shown wrong on many accounts due to the sources he used sometimes being corrupted. The claim that only 19 years existed between Solomon and Homer is incorrect, the consensus claims around two centuries—the earliest recording of Αιθιοπια did not appear in Homer’s text until at least 2–3 centuries after the time of Solomon and Sheba.*

I think Herodotus is being misunderstood. Homer was certainly 8th C or even mid 9th C (850) BC. But Homer was not writing about conditions close to his own day, the War of Troy took place in 1194 - 1184 (according to at least one of the traditional dates, and a very popular one). In my educated guess, Ethiopians were involved on the Trojan side because the Trojan side was in a way a Hittite side. And therefore Hittite material had been reworked into the Iliad. I think the reference to Ethiopia may really mean that Ethiopia sided with Hittites against Egypt in the battle of Kadesh. I think that epic poetry had among other functions that of glorifying the military and hospitable past of the nobility to which it is sung, and that in this case the nobility included quite a few ex-Hittite nobles who after fall of Hattusha wanted to forget all about Hittites, but not all about their own family. Kadesh material was thus reworked into Iliad. Aenaeas being "son of Venus" I have tentatively tied in with Aenaeas being a Hittite noble descended from the Venus-priestess and Sun-Goddess-priestess, the Hittite Empress Puduhepa.**

Now, this has mainly been about past events of interest to historians and, like to myself, to history buffs. I would usually have posted it on my Φιλολoγικά/Philologica blog. Except of course, for this little matter of King of the South in book of Daniel probably having showed his face already, and I mean SALMAN, not Obama. That is the reason why I placed the discussion here.

I came to read the old article by Patrick Clarke through the fact of its being linked to in today's article on Biblical Age of the Earth. Suspiciously, it touches a theme I was publishing on the other day, but does not mention me.*** If they do not want to give credibility to a Creationist who is a Catholic, why are they writing articles on Chesterton, as Catholic as I and less decidedly a Creationist? If they want to show forth no present day creationists they disagree with on any point, how come they have published an article by Benno Zuidam, who also is not in their team? Be that as it may be, I usually enjoy reading them, even when disagreeing with either a Protestant or a Heliocentric position of theirs.

Perhaps the problem is my attitude to Homer. I do believe he lived about 300 - 400 years after the Trojan War, and I still believe he reflects it fairly correctly, except for totally failing to mention the role of the Hittite Empire in it. They may think I am betraying Christianity and cowing down to Paganism, because I accept a Pagan tradition and a Pagan poet reflecting it as being mainly historical. I think I would be betraying Christian claims about the reliability of Genesis, if I were not also thinking the shorter paths of oral tradition between Odin and St Olaf and Snorre, or between Trojan War and homecoming of Ulysses and Homer were also reliable as history, even when they fail as theology.° Or perhaps some other reason which they have failed to mention.

Update or PS:

But he has a point in observing that the Hebrew text does not say ‘Queen of Sheba’ but ‘Queen Sheba’. If it is ‘Queen Sheba’ it is not apparent what is meant. If Sheba was a place it is true that most scholars identify it with Yemen in Arabia, but according to Genesis 10:7 Sheba was a grandson of Cush and the land of Cush was directly south of Egypt.°°

1) How would "Queen Sheba" have differed from "Queen of Sheba" in Hebrew? As far as I recall, the latter is expressed as "queen" in construvtive state (no, I didn't learn Hebrew, ma did, came far enough to read psalms at least) followed by "Sheba". Then how would "Queen Sheba" have been expressed?

2) Sheba being grandson of Cush and land of Cush being South of Egypt does not equate to land of Sheba being South of Egypt. In Black Africa, you have Cushites, but not necessarily all of them. I think it correct that Sheba is in Yemen, and Rahma even in India, and this probably originally in Dravidic and darker population. I think their Ramayana (though Hanuman was neither God nor even "a god", nor for that matter a monkey) records farily accurately the arrival or him there./HGL

Update or PS II:

Patrick Clarke gave an even better answer on point two°°:

Down seeks to dismiss all this sort of evidence by citing Genesis 10:7, while overlooking 10:28 which shows that another Sheba was also a son of Joktan, long regarded by conservative scholarship as a progenitor of tribes in the Arabian Peninsula.

That is, mainly of its southern part, since middle is more like Ishmael, in combination with Madianites who merged into the people of Ishmael./HGL
