A Pastor John Mis-Referenced a Study on Divorce Factors

Can I Marry a Woman Half My Age?
Desiring God | 23 July 2021 | Ask Pastor John
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHj7skKgOis

At 6:53 in the video, he states that "one group of statistics that I consulted said that a gap of 10 years increases the likelihood of divorce by 39 % ..."

He concludes, a couple with 30 + years age gap has no chance, as the (increased) likelihood is 172 %.

Now, what he did not understand is, an increased likelihood and a likelihood are not the same thing.

If the likelihood for all other factors is 10 %, this means if the age gap is 30 + years, the likelihood will be 17.2 % instead (still 82.8 % likelihood of not divorcing).

Now, there are a few problems apart from this. Here is the study by the actual expert, but with the age gap statistic left out:

What makes for a stable marriage?
PUBLISHED ON OCTOBER 11, 2014 BY DR. RANDAL S. OLSON
https://randalolson.com/2014/10/10/what-makes-for-a-stable-marriage/

Here is a reference to it by a divorce lawyer:

Age Gap and Marriage
Kelly Chang law and mediation offices
https://purposedrivenlawyers.com/age-gap-and-marriage/

And I know it's the same study, because not only do the staple diagrammes look the same way, but also, the Kelly Chang page actually linked to a link that linked to Dr. Randal S. Olson.

So, the study by Randal Olson actually says a lot of other factors too.

For instance, wedding expense and wedding attendance.

200 + attending the wedding = divorce 92 % less likely. Than reference point, in this case only the couple.
$0—1 k = divorce 53 % less likely than the reference point, which in this case is not an extreme, but expenses the area of $5—10 k.

So, let's take again "other factors at 10 %" ... if I can get 201 to attend the wedding, that lowers the risk to 0.8 %, and if I can get a fairly cheap place where the wedding guests bring their own food, and not pay too much to the priest, that is like ... OK, let's skip that, and take another route. Decimal fractions are easier for me than percentage fractions.

0.1 risk at other factors.
0.47 risk reduction by low wedding costs.
0.08 risk reduction by many wedding guests.
1.72 risk enhancement by 30 + years age gap.

0.1 * 0.47 * 0.08 * 1.72 = 0.0064672

That's overall a risk of 0.6 % of divorcing.

That's one part of what was wrong in how Pastor John referenced the study. He seems to have thought that 172 % increased divorce risk means sth like the 172 % are added to the other risk factors. No. It's multiplication. This reminds me how "5 in 4 people struggle with math" ... if you have heard the quote.

But there is more.

There was no statistics on how number of children in common would affect the divorce risk. I'd say it's higher the fewer you have, and I think Mr and Mrs Duggar are still married despite a very major crisis. By contrast, Mr Hovind ...

He married his wife Jo in 1973 and they had three children between 1977 and 1979.

... is not married to her any more. They shouldn't have waited four years. They shouldn't have stopped after 3.

Obviously, marrying a much younger woman and NOT having children will have a very different effect from marrying a much younger woman and getting ON to making children, because I am still fertile and so is she.

But there is even more than that!

Earlier today, I ran across an interesting study on divorce titled 'A Diamond is Forever' and Other Fairy Tales: The Relationship between Wedding Expenses and Marriage Duration. The authors of this study polled thousands of recently married and divorced Americans (married 2008 or later) and asked them dozens of questions about their marriage: How long they were dating, how long they were engaged, etc. After running this data through a multivariate model, the authors were able to calculate the factors that best predicted whether a marriage would end in divorce.

In other words, the idea behind the risk is ...

  • taken from a poll, not comprehensive statistics
  • and obtained for each variable by analysis in a "multivariate model" ...

And, I was actually wrong about where the study came, from, Randal S. Olson was actually not the one conducting the study, he linked to it ... and the methodology doesn't seem over solid, as said.

Data collection was conducted in July and August 2014. We offered mTurk workers $0.50 to $0.75 to complete the survey. Altogether, 3,370 people completed the survey. We excluded respondents who had a non-US IP address, reported having a same-sex marriage, reported an age at marriage of less than 13 years old, or were above age 60. We also excluded respondents who finished the survey in less than 2 minutes and provided inconsistent responses about age of partner, which was asked at the beginning and end of the questionnaire. After these filters, the final sample consisted of 3,151 respondents

So, if the guy who was 48 and wanted to marry a 24 year old woman refrained from it due to the advice from Pastor John, this could be a question of "doctrines of demons ... forbidding to marry" ...

PS, another guy, who did not specify where he was from, wrote (as if this were a fact all around the globe) that "socially acceptable" involved a "creepiness rule" but this was actually too lenient.
  • The "rule" was a man could date someone half his age plus seven.
  • The guy claimed this rule was way too permissive. But he didn't state where that was so. Obviously, it was not the the case in 17th C. Zerbst:

Has Introibo Discredited the Orthodoxy of Fr De Pauw?

Assorted retorts from yahoo boards and elsewhere: Yes, Homosexual People Already Had the Right to Marry · New blog on the kid: Has Introibo Discredited the Orthodoxy of Fr De Pauw? · Is Trent 24, canon 10 a warrant for arranging someone else's celibacy? · Correspondence of Hans Georg Lundahl: Will This be Answered?

I think so.

Why?

Introibo Ad Altare Dei : Choosing A Marriage Partner In Today's World
https://introiboadaltaredei2.blogspot.com/2023/05/choosing-marriage-partner-in-todays.html

There are things he learned from Fr. DePauw about chosing the right one which are excellent stuff - if you have the patience or the chastity to afford patience.

But it seems, Fr. DePauw's position was, "marriage is a vocation" ...

Never forget that it has always been taught by the Church that there are four vocations given to humanity by God. The word "vocation" comes from the Latin "vocare" meaning "to call or summon." Each of us is summoned by God to sanctify both ourselves and the world in one of four callings: the priesthood (for men only); the religious life (nuns, brothers, monks);the married life; and the single life. Marriage is therefore both a vocation and a sacrament. It must be entered into, like any vocation, intelligently and after prayerful consideration. The most important thing you can do is to pray often .

This is Introibo's words, but claimed to be part of a compilation of what he learned from Fr DePauw.

Now, here is a very different view of what vocations are and how marriage and single life in the world should be classified:

Is Marriage a Vocation?
JAN 16, 2018 BROTHER ANDRÉ MARIE
https://catholicism.org/is-marriage-a-vocation.html

Living well and generously in the state of life (single, married) or “secondary vocation” (priesthood or religious life) we have embraced is the way each of us will sanctify ourselves in our primary vocation, that of the baptized.

I. e. priesthood and religious life are both states in life and vocations. Being married or single in the world are states in life, but not vocations.

It seems to me, this position is the more correct one. At least, they are not usually vocations.

I commented under Introibo's post, not sure he will validate my comment, and I also sent an email to an Opus Dei site, which seems to agree with DePauw and with Introibo.

Historically, I think the idea of marriage as entered only as a vocation (for all and anyone who is married) is tied up with Martin Luther's idea that being a carpenter and a married man are as much of vocations as being clergy. He denied the vocation to monk or nun even existed. It is apparently also the position of Amoris Laetitia. I find Brother André Marie more reassuring to agree with than Bergoglio.

This also ties in with how much individual choice a Christian is supposed to have about his life. Some claim that the idea of chosing one's life is the Satanic rebellion, the Edenic disobedience, the fault of Babel. While Satan was a rebel, he was also and has been since, a tyrant. In Genesis 2, God spoke individually, "thou shalt not eat" and in the temptation of Genesis 3, Satan, the Old Serpent, spoke collectively "you shall be as gods, knowing good from evil" .... Crowley has less claim on being Satanic than either Nimrod or Antichrist, and his "do what thou wilt" is midway between Satan's temptation in its fullness and St. Augustine's "have charity, and do what thou wilt" ... there are Calvinists who pretend that chosing one's own spouse by oneself, instead of getting one from the family is repeat offense of the evil in Genesis 6 "took to themselves wives of all which they chose." This is a very different attitude from Catholic Church law that says the will of the two contrahends is sufficient for validity, even in the absence of parental consent, that disobeying parents is only normally a mortal sin, that the parents cannot force their children either way, that parental consent cannot replace the own consent.

Laun - Schönborn 1-0

As born in Vienna, I cannot totally neglect the supposed "Catholic bishop" and even "Cardinal" who disfigures its Archdiocese.

I am on record as saying homosexuals can marry. I stand by that despite the divorce of Josh Weed.

I am equally, let it be noted, on record as saying "gay marriage" is not marriage. Now, what did the one and the other of these (Laun / Schönborn) say?

But now concerning the question of Cardinal Marx, and not a few of the priests, the answer is simple: one may ask for God's blessing for sinners, but not for the sin. That is to say, one could not consecrate a brothel, one could not bless a concentration camp or weapons which are not explicitly ordained for hunting or for legitimate self-defense. Therefore it is clear that one may not bless a relationship which is sinful; [one may not bless] the mafia; no blessing for organizations or institutions which promote or procure abortions or which propagate ideologies which are against the Faith, antisemitic contents, or other forms of racist thought.

“It certainly is not acceptable to mention the value of same-sex relationships at the same time as mentioning the mafia or concentration camps, as it now unfortunately has happened,” said Schönborn. “These things are not to be compared. To talk like this is unacceptable.”

Additionally, Cardinal Schönborn declared helplessness in light of the “marriage for all.”

“The 'marriage-for-all' poses for us as Church some challenges for which we do not have sure formulas,” he said. “We have to find careful answers to these questions which keep the dignity and the salvation of the souls of the concerned in view.”

For the part "unacceptable" Laun has answered that common denominator is mortal sinfulness. Which is true.

In fact, there is a certain class of mortally sinful sins which are worse than usual, namely "sins that cry to heaven for vengeance". Murder, sin against nature (sodomite, lesbian, bestial, perhaps also solitary), oppression of widows, orphans and paupers, denying the labourer his just wage.

One can debate about whether a mafioso is a murderer. May depend on when and where, but often one may presume mafiosi are so, however, a priest blessing a meeting place of a mafia and the mafia meeting there might have a case for doubting that. I was once in a boy's camp in a dorm called "Mafia BF".* Probably none in that Mafia was a murderer then, and I hope none became one such. But one can hardly debate that a self styled homosexual couple, not simply two men cohabiting as "room mates", like Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson, but a union of "love" in a sense clearly going "beyond" friendship, is involved in sin against nature.

In other words, one can certainly say the comment of Schönborn is insulting to Mafiosi - especially the ones of Mafia BF.** Or there was a Mafioso, when the Virgin was carried in procession close to his prison, a statue of Her that is, the ones carrying stumbled so it looked as if She bowed down over him. Probably a more worthy of blessings than a gay couple, perhaps he has repented if murders were involved. Or perhaps there weren't.

PS, in enumeration of sins against nature crying out for vengeance of heaven, I forgot heterosexual couples using coitus interruptus or other corrupt practises to avoid having more children. European countries having combined licit and sponsored condoms (et cetera) with old age pensions have for some decades given false hopes that people don't need to look after their old age by having children, and this has led to several crises in pensions' systems. Sweden in 2003 declared privatisation of pensions above an insufficient minimum, France recently changed conditions for pension system to the worse, and Germany, when I was in Berlin after New Year 2005 was telling me the young were being harrassed to work and pay taxes so much they could no longer concentrate on having children of their own. Obviously an idea supplementing above arrangement, namely that immigrants would guarantee pensions when children fail to do so, has not been working out correctly. And I have in Sweden online been called a Nazi, demonising immigrants, for pointing this out, for saying they are not stupid. Since I don't think it is their duty to be stupid, I don't think saying they are not stupid (on this matter) is anything like demonising them./HGL

* "Mafia BF" = "Mafia (ex-)Blaue Falken", since same dorm minus me had been called "Blaue Falken" before. Or perhaps even it had been "Mafia BF" before and it became "Blutströpfchen" (after one nosebleeding when chosing new name) my year. That camp was my longest contact with Calvinism, since Austrian Protestantism (usually in Burgenland or Vienna) is Calvinist. ** However, as the other boys were Calvinists on a regular basis, not Church hoppers as ma and me back then, there was no priest blessing that dorm. *** Romae passio sanctorum septem Martyrum fratrum, filiorum sanctae Felicitatis Martyris, id est Januarii, Felicis, Philippi, Silvani, Alexandri, Vitalis et Martialis, tempore Antonini Imperatoris, sub Praefecto Urbis Publio. Normal Bakery vs Art Bakery

There is such a thing as a wedding cake case in US.

Supreme Court just gave favourable decision to bakers.

It seems Mark Shea* missed this (or is referring to other Christian bakers who are not art bakers, but simply bakers) and a Jewish Christian friend of mine missed this too, since he had worked in a normal bakery and said they should have delivered the cake, but could have refused the decoration.

As Mark Shea very rightly observes, a Jewish baker may very well have to deliver cakes to a KKK feast, but he is not required to decorate it with (Mark Shea's brilliant comparison):

“Mazeltov on your promotion to Imperial Grand Dragon of the Biloxi KKK!”

Supposing, of course, the bakery is primarily a bakery and what you order is primarily cakes and art work is an occasional extra.

However, the bakery in question was an art bakery. Requiring a wedding cake of it is like requiring a decorated wedding cake. They have as much a right to refuse a particular cake as a tattoo shop has a right to refuse a swastika tattoo on someone's forehead.

They were willing to provide any other baked product to the gay couple, including, I presume perhaps even, a cake of same type, but not decorated by them, and therefore not labelled wedding cake.

Why do I say this? I failed to contact him and ask him. However, I could check wiki:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masterpiece_Cakeshop_v._Colorado_Civil_Rights_Commission

It cited his petition as:

Whether applying Colorado's public accommodations law to compel Phillips to create expression that violates his sincerely held religious beliefs about marriage violates the Free Speech or Free Exercise Clauses of the First Amendment.

As I checked footnote 9, I came to a pdf for the writ to Supreme court - Petition for a Writ of Certiorari (PDF). - and this is a clause clearly shown (click to enlarge and read):

This means, what was being denied was not sponge cake and frosting, what was being denied was precisely a specific decoration celebrating a specific thing, where Jack Phillips is also refusing to decorate Halloween cakes.

I wouldn't do that, but I would limit Halloween cake decorations to "don't forget to pray for the dear departed" and to things consistent with this. Not to things opposing it. So, let a gay couple buy as much bakery products as bakery products as it wants, but don't let them require a decoration inconsistent with the beliefs of the one decorating.

Precisely as I am a writer and cannot be required to blog pro-gay-marriage or anything like that.

Now, Mark Shea is also making a very much less candid comparison:

He shows a meme I have never seen, a text "Bake My Damned Cake" over a black profile with a cross around neck and a pistol to the neck with rainbow colouring to both pistol and hand.

Now, he continues to describe this meme as typical, here are his words:

It is a fairly typical specimen of conservative Christian self-pity from a nation of conservative Christians, acutely aware of the real sufferings of real martyrs throughout history and around the world today and hungry to pretend that their trivial problems are equal to that.

They aren’t. That’s not to say that there is not a real issue here that needs to be addressed. But the hype (which, I confess with chagrin, I used to buy and repeat) about gays coming to destroy us all is just that: hype. Nobody is putting guns to anybody’s heads. And if we are smart Christians we will stop playing the martyr card and start exercising the virtue of Prudence.

Now, persecution is not always made by pistols to the head. In Communist tyranny from 1917 to 1990 or from 1945 to 1990 (depending on country of the East Block), the pistol to the head was in fact not standard procedure to standard Christian (though Jack Phillips is somewhat beyond standard), it was more on Communists deciding on who could teach and ... here is the point : who could do business.

What happened after 2012 was in the immediate a kind of campaign to close down the cake shop over this refusal.

"And that no man might buy or sell, but he that hath the character, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name."
[Apocalypse (Revelation) 13:17]

There is perhaps upcoming a literal physical character, but there is also a question (including in the taking of such a physical character) of taking on a moral character contrary to commandments or of downplaying the moral character that is consistent with them.

In fact, the other guy who was against the supreme court decision was worried least a "discrimination allowed as per conscience" should be a precedent to discriminate against Christians. A worry I could relate to, but there is an answer : you do not force an Atheist florist to decorate a Marian festival at a Catholic Church - nor should you. There are Catholic florists who are willing to do that art work. There are also pro-gay bakers who are willing to do a wedding cake for a gay "marriage". In Lakewood Colorado, there would not have been too much of a problem finding one.

I have heard the argument that opposing gay marriage would be like a medical doctor refusing to treat someone because he was gay. More, if you like comparing to medicine, refusing to give the opposite to the correct treatment according to irrational preference of patient. If a constipated person wants to take another full helping of white rice, no sauce, and unsugared tea, he can at least not ask a doctor to prescribe that. And if a patient with diarrhaea wants to indulge in eating pizza with alcohol, then adding a sugary flan and a few prunes for desser, he should also not ask a doctor to prescribe that. The measures are counterindicated.

In a moral "medicine" called moral theology also there are counterindications. Such and such being considered or even considering himself a homosexual is not one to marriage. But wanting to marry someone of the same sex very much is a counterindication to that "marriage". So much for marriage as a sacrament.

As to secular society, matrimony is privileged as an institution for procreating and raising children - traditionally, that is. Extending the same privileges to "couples" who will contribute no children to society and who may even want to raise children taken away from their real parents is a horror:

  • like abortion and contraception, because it contributes to an "age pyramid" looking like a top hat, to too many old in relation to the young who should support them, something which may be palliated by importing young from countries which do not have these measures, but only for so long, since people from those countries, if they get numerous while we decrease, are likely to more and more despise our "ethnic suicide" and its contraceptive measures (and perhaps even the pro-immigration part as to immigrants of other convictions or backgrounds);

  • because gay couples on the waiting list for adoption or foster home placements are likely to lob for extending the reasons on which children may be taken away from parents.

Therefore, secular society too should have continued not discriminating against homosexual persons, but not calling homosexual "couples" a thing like "married". Unfortunately, this point of view was not explicitated in the campaigns either in US or France, despite my trying to, and this try has been a reason some discriminate against my blogs (yes, you are free to discriminate about whom you chose to read). (No, you are not morally free to see how sth exposes the hypocrisy of your opponent, but to still not use it because you share some of your opponent's modern superstitions, like in this case the inaptitude of a homosexual, automatically as such, to make a normal heterosexual marriage).

There are other ways of making war on Christians than by gun - like by putting them out of business, therefore into the charity or social responsibility of non-Christians or less fervent ones, into margins where they are less likely to found a family. It is not quite trivial. Mark Shea's applause for the Catholic Church in Poland is not quite unmerited, but not unproblematic:

  • Catholics in Poland have not stayed Catholic on all accounts, it seems Maciej Giertych is a minority on opposing evolution (there was even a Polish "Pope" promoting it, I have heard);

  • Catholics are not to accept quietly to get Catholicism (and I mean fullfledged Catholicism, not whatever Vatican II Sect choses to be content with in the latest compromise) reduced to a mere survival mode, like the Propaganda congregation asking the Jesuits of Gefle on reading of few converts "what have you been doing?" and getting as answer (in German, since the priests were from Germany) "wir haben durchgehalten" (we have persevered). Mark Shea has a tendency to oppose "Christianists" whereever a Christian wants more than himself leading a Christian life by taking up his cross in an adverse society. This is not correct, just as promoting universal refusal to carry arms in defense of one's country is not correctly motivated by saying "if we are invaded, we can make a guerilla warfare or resistance movement".

mail dot com : Turkey withdraws child marriage bill, submits it for review
November 22, 2016
https://www.mail.com/int/news/europe/4775744-turkey-withdraws-child-marriage-bill-submits-revie.html

Opponents argued that the bill amounted to a pardon for statutory rape if the perpetrator was married to his victim and would disrupt efforts to prevent child marriages and sexual assault on children. They maintained that it would, for example legitimize the practice of men taking brides as young as 13 or 14.

The Catholic Church has for centuries allowed girls as young as 12 to marry.

And, NOT JUST when there had been premarital sex.

The one thing that really should change in bill is, marriage should be lowered back to 12 - and then the crime statutory rape should be limited to cases under 12 or men not intending to marry, or when consent is lacking, but that would be normal rape or sexual abuse, not statutory./HGL

Signed!/HGL

Dear Croatian Citizens:

On behalf of all individuals that believe that marriage is between 1 man and 1 woman, we thank you for setting such a great example to the world with your recent referendum protecting marriage.

It is remarkable that you did not give in to the mass media campaigns and lobby groups that tried to sway your vote.

It is our hope that many our nations will follow your example.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]

I have the wish, I do not alas feel very confident about it. To me Croatia is a light shining in darkness./HGL
