Astute observers of my FB Page Might Know: I Share Lots of Pro-Life and Lots of Chesterton

If you are friends with me on FB and actually look me up and have not noted this, astute is probably not the best description you can have for yourself. I mean, if I spend 30 min. on FB, I'm probably sharing at least five of either Chesty* or Lila Rose (or related) or both.

Unless I'm arguing on a FB group for Creation and against Evolution, for Flood and against Deep Time. For Angelic Movers and against Deep Space. For Freewill being real and against it being an illusion of law bound deterministic matter. That happens too.

Some who knew my MSN Group Antimodernism before it shut down in early 2009 will also know that I enumerated four authors who led me to the Catholic Faith in my youth, I can add from ages 9 to 25, to be precise ("don't be!"), these being in chronological order of my becoming their reader:

  • C. S. Lewis
  • J. R. R. Tolkien
  • Gilbert Keith Chesterton
  • Hilaire Belloc.

And the most obvious convert to the Catholic Church among these is Chesterton. CSL converted ... back to the Anglican Church he had stopped believing in after his mother died. JRRT actually did convert to the Catholic Church, but this is little known. He was too old to be received simply when his mother converted** so he had to go to Catechesis in order to convert. I think it was at age 12 he was received. Hilaire Belloc was a cradle Catholic, from an Anglo-French couple. The one person of the four who was first some kind of High Churchish Protestantism and then a Catholic, like my own case, was Gilbert.

So, if you have ever concluded he had sth to do with my conversion, you are right. He did not absolutely determine it, it was actually Tollers who gave me the clue when speaking of Anglicanism in the essay on English and Welsh, and it was in my case a matter of Church history: if the Church of England (that of CSL) or Church of Sweden (my own) were split off from the Catholic Church, I either had to defend splitting off, somehow, and it wasn't restorationism, like Joseph Smith would have defended it, or I had to sooner or later join the original Church.***

However, unlike Newman of whom I back then read only one book, the Apologia, Chesterton both accompanied my conversion and became a constant companion through my reading. So, here is on his conversion:

One part of my own argument was actually parallel to his, about agreeing with Catholicism, and this was the pro-life issue:

The video is slightly inaccurate in implying that Communist Yugoslavia was part of the Soviet Block. In economics, Tito was continuing while Stalin was discontinuing the NEP, the pro-Kulak policy, which as a Distributist I like. This also led to a rupture between Yugoslavia and the Warszaw Pact, I think even before it was actually formed. However, in lots of other areas, like abortion, like anti-Christian compulsory education, like secret police, it was Marxist, which as a Christian I totally abhor. Like Social Democracy has worked roughly speaking like a Fascism in economics° (also to my liking) but also has loads of Marxism, not unlike Yugoslavia. Both economies obviously functioned better than the Soviet Block, but that doesn't mean the societies were necessarily all that human. Man has other sides to his being than pure economics.

But the point is, I was already abortion banner before joining the Catholic Church. When I say abortion is murder, I'm not simply submitting to the authority of the Church, I already knew that before I accepted this authority. It was one of the reasons for accepting it. Dito for my deep hatred of contraception. Chesterton shared these, but I already had these from mother before coming to him.

And as I was also a Young Earth Creationist on the day of my reception into the Church°° (or what I took to be such), you may imagine that my take on the Galileo trial was to a high degree caught by St. Robert Bellarmine defending Biblical inerrancy. I was OK with being allowed to be Deep Timer and Evolutionist if I wanted, I was OK with being allowed to be Heliocentric. I was even more OK with not being obliged to either. The book by Sister Broomé had recommended Heliocentrism as proven scientifically by parallax, but not presented this as obliging the conscience of the faith. At least, Heliocentrism wasn't proven in Galileo's day. Since 2001, I add: nor has it been proven since.

* Not sure I should call him that, many who do are girls. ** When he was 8, I think. *** In my teens I simply didn't doubt that Caerularius split off from St. Leo IX rather than the inverse, in some of my adult years, I did have such a doubt and became Romanian Orthodox between late 2006 and Pentecost of 2009, when a sermon by an Orthodox priest or bishop drove me back to Old Rome, that sermon endorsing contraception, at least implicitly. ° Specifically, the Swedish Fascist Engdahl, admirer of Mussolini and of Perón, said one of his men (Nysvenskar) was also a party member, a high ranking one, of Social Democrats, and helped form the Saltsjöbad policies. While the technical solution is different, both Fascism and Swedish Social Democracy have as obvious at least short to mid term goals that Employers and Employees should get along and the state help out so they didn't make a civil war or attempts of Revolution over wages. °° At this point, in 1988, there was not yet any CCC with its § 283. Sweden was not France and did not have Pierres vivantes. Also, converts were not required to profess an obedience and acceptance of current positions of the magisterium, a profession "John Paul II" introduced in 1990, in a wording that doesn't make the adhesion conditional on its being a traditional position, unlike Trent Session IV (sententiam quam tenuit et adhuc tenet).

Zerschlagt was uns noch hemmen mag
und nach dem Gestern weist.
Die neue Zeit steigt in den Tag
und will den neuen Geist.

  • José Antonio veut de la justice entre ouvriers et patrons, considérant les ouvriers de son temps comme des victimes réelles de malfaits ;
  • il ne la veut pas par le moyen de la révolution ;

Sweden and FSSPX

Do Muslims Get Their Info on Franco from Harun Yahya? · Sweden and FSSPX

Let's set the scene, a bit.

Two known and young Trad Catholics are Nick Fuentes and Connor Estelle. While they are known only as "Trad" Catholics, I don't have pretty much doubt their priests are from the FSSPX. If there aren't, there certainly are people like them at some FSSPX chapels and St. Nicolas du Chardonnet. You may have noted, Connor Estelle, in his interview for The Catholic Herald, came out as in support of Francisco Franco. At St. Nicolas du Chardonnet, I more than once went to the Missa pro defunctis mass for el Caudillo. I always felt a peace, wondering "is this really necessary, isn't he already in Heaven?" (I'm an ex-Palmarian, and Palmar de Troya have actually canonised him, so, to them 20 November is not a day for black, but for, I think red — I think they concluded he was a martyr, not just any saint). I reflected on it in words like "the Church keeps praying up to canonisation" ... a bit like a Missa pro defunctis for Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, also still not canonised.

Meanwhile. Sweden involves quite a lot of people who fought in the International Brigades. Some of those might be prone to compare Franco to Hitler. I think most Swedes would unthinkingly qualify Franco as a Fascist, and in some of the jargons about movements and philosophies, you don't define Fascism as "Corporativism, Antiparliamentarianism, Street Fighting" but as "philosophy of Gentile, Rosenberg and Hitler". In other words Fascism is both defined as sth objectionable and criminal, and applied to things that are not necessarily so, including Franco. To give a taste of the atmosphere, in a parish I often visited, at the time an exclusively Novus Ordo parish, like my own, I knew a family from Paraguay, and once I accompanied the dad and mum to a countermanifestation against a Communist parade. The three of us stood there, he held up a cross, we chanted "we are the black forces" ... the slogans of the Commies were against the black forces. I was more scrupulous back then, confessed, and was reprimanded for that participation. My father confessor by "black forces" probably thought Fascists, and in fact, when I checked with the family from Paraguay, in their country it's the party colour of Christian Democrats. Gasperi or Adenauer, not Mussolini or Franco.*

Add to that, National Socialism was to a very high degree Protestant. And consequently authoritarian, as opposed to rectitudarian (who's commanding matter's more than what's right). The exact same thing is true of Sweden at large. So, what will happen to Catholics who swim in that culture? They will overemphasise the authority structures and Swedish Catholics are very prone to do this equation:

Martin Luther = did not obey the Pope (even when excommunicated)
Monsignor Lefebvre = did not obey the Pope (even when excommunicated)
Monsignor Lefebvre = Martin Luther

So, in Monsignor Lefebvre, they basically see "nearly a Lutheran" who, it being known he appreciated Franco, appreciated "nearly a Nazi".**

Again, when FSSPX say "we have a right to work here, because there is a case of necessity" it's not altogether clear that in Sweden there actually is one, on Lefebvrian principles. A Sedevacantist or a Conclavist or a Palmarian could say "the Novus Ordo is invalid, there is a case of necessity" but FSSPX tends to focus on other things, how Missa versus populum fosters an irreverent attitude, how clown masses and guitar masses destroy reverence altogether, how in some cases this could lead to priests having an invalid intention and therefore offering an invalid mass, especially because "for you and for many"*** was replaced by "for all" ... most of this part of a case of necessity doesn't exist in Sweden. The Swedish translation was "for you and for the many", clown masses and guitar masses don't exist, priests are usually pretty well aware of what Sacrifice of the Mass is ... Sweden is a bit of a mixture of Archdiocese of Paris in respect of World War II politics and Normandy or Var in respect of theology or liturgy. The devout Swedish mass goer who hears a Lefebvrian case for not going to Novus Ordo will say "if you just mean Extraordinary Rite is preferrable, that's not a state of emergency, and if you mean Novus Ordo is automatically invalid, you are Sedevacantists" ... the best actually Lefebvrian case for a case of necessity would be for some Catholics who want to honour Franco and be blunt to Protestants about the Reformation being wrong. I was as discouraged in that, as I was in my Franco admiration.

But they will have no problem saying between Catholics that the Reformation was wrong, insofar as they love telling Lefebvrians they are as wrong as Luther.

It happened in 1993, to me, when I lost friends over coming out as Lefebvrian. It happened again in recent news, as you will see from this video by Anthony Stine:

Drama Explodes Between The SSPX And A Mainstream Bishop

I have my own issue with Arborelius°, whose name he mispronounced this first time, but I'm far from surprised by his ungenerous attitude to the FSSPX. I suspect his worst concern could be, in the FSSPX, people like Nick Fuentes and Connor Estelle aren't treated as excommunicated. Neither are they in Normandy, which liturgically and theologically corresponds better to Swedish mainstream Catholicism. It wasn't Germany, it wasn't Pétain, but the Allies that made thousands of homeless in 1945 by bombing Le Havre ... °° And obviously, if in Burgos you go to Mass every Lord's Day and vote Partido Popular, you are probably pretty friendly to Franco. I mean, Fraga was friendlier to Franco than Gasperi to Mussolini. But never mind all that. Arborelius has let so many Swedes down by accepting to "obey a foreign potentate" (the Pope), by bowing down to statues of Mary, by saying Calvary is made present in ever Mass, by saying if you use condoms you go to Hell, he can't also let them down by allowing one of his flock to praise the former Caudillo of Spain! Or by not demonising as best as he can the priests who will allow their flock to do so.

And I don't regret it./HGL

* In fact, the Falange of Franco combined a blue shirt and a red beret.
** Monsignor Lefebvre also appreciated Adenauer, clearly an anti-Nazi, as well as Salazar and De Valera. Of these, De Valera was once mass server to Monsignor Lefebvre, well before Vatican II or at least before the Liturgic Reform.

Perhaps I Should Just Quit Calling Myself a Fascist, After All

Still Corporativist, still pro-life, but the following is pretty damning:

Between 1926 and 1943, the Fascist regime arrested thousands of Italians and deported them to island internment colonies and small villages in southern Italy. ... The Fascist state ruled Italy violently, projecting its coercive power deeply and diffusely into society through confinement, imprisonment, low-level physical assaults, economic deprivations, intimidation, discrimination and other quotidian forms of coercion. ... Fascist repression was thus more intense and ideological than previously thought and even shared some important similarities with Nazi and Soviet terror.

I note, to my defense, that March on Rome to 1926 was different, and that Squadrista violence initially had some reasons, in defense against the Biennio Rosso ... but stopped too late. Mussolini himself noted that in the Matteotti hearing on January 3rd 1925./HGL

Australia | Canada | New Zealand | South Africa | UK/Europe | United States

Perlasca worked with the Spanish Chargé d'Affaires, Ángel Sanz Briz, and other diplomats of neutral states to smuggle Jews out of Hungary. The system he devised consisted of furnishing "protection cards" which placed Jews under the guardianship of various neutral states. He helped Jews find refuge in protected houses under the control of various embassies, which had extraterritorial conventions that gave them an equivalent to sovereignty. They could provide asylum for Jews.[2][3]

When Sanz Briz left Hungary at night in November 1944, he did not tell Perlasca that he was going to leave,[4] and Perlasca chose to remain in Hungary. The Hungarian government ordered the Spanish Embassy building and the extraterritorial houses where the Jews took refuge to be cleared out. Perlasca immediately made the false announcement that Sanz Briz was due to return from a short leave, and that he had been appointed as chargé d'affaires for the meantime.[2] Throughout the winter, Perlasca was active in hiding, shielding and feeding thousands of Jews in Budapest. He continued issuing safe conduct passes as initiated by Spanish government, on the basis of a Spanish decree passed 20 December 1924 that granted citizenship to Jews of Sephardic origin (descendants of Iberian Jews expelled from Spain in the late 15th century), but it had been canceled in 1930, a fact the Hungarian authorities were not aware of.[3]

I thought the decree about Sephardic Jews becoming Spanish Citizens was by El Caudillo ... I only read briefly about this in a book mainly about Raoul Wallenberg.

So, it was in reality issused by Primo de Rivera (the elder), under Alfons XIII, revoked by Dámaso Berenguer, also under Alfons XIII, and the revocation was ignored by an Italian posing as Spanish Diplomat (with some right as Italian volunteer veteran in the Spanish war).

Giorgio Prelasca, bene fatto ... much as I like the Caudillo on some matters (like banning freemasonry or defending the Church), I'm happy to give credit where it's due.

To another, whether you prefer to call him Fascist or Ex-Fascist (he had broken with La Repubblica di Salò, I think very rightly so), mind you.

Who had joined the National Fascist Party, but obviously not the Republican Fascist Party. Who had fought under the high command of Franco and direct command of men like Gastone Gambara, in the Corpo Truppe Volontarie.

If some people love to give credit to the Red Army for liberating Auschwitz, I love to give credit to the mayor of Assisi (who had been in the March on Rome) and men like Giorgio Perlasca and Ángel Sanz Briz.

So, was Perlasca an Ex-Fascist? In a very banale sense, we must say he was, since he said so. At a certain point, he did not any longer believe in Italian Fascism ... pretty much coinciding with the point where I thought it had gone wrong (until I checked details about the Ethiopian war, somewhat earlier, and saw the great service to Austria was also earlier than I thought).

Perlasca grew disillusioned with fascism, in particular, due to Benito Mussolini's alliance with Nazism and adoption of Italian racial laws that came into force in 1938.

I definitely agree with those two points. So, in my terms, he grew disillusioned with Italian Fascism about at the right moment. He didn't express regret over having fought for Franco, nor should he have. He didn't take a distance from what I take to be the core value of combining Christian tradition and Economic justice of Corporativist type (also used for the economy of Sweden, but Social Democracy there has other, darker, more Marxist sides as well). It's somewhat of an exaggeration when I tend to call myself a Fascist. Apart from this core value, there are two other parts, common to pretty much all Fascisms of the thirties, namely Squadrismo (organising street fighters) and Antiparliamentarianism. I'm half and half Antiparliamentarian, considering what evils Parliaments have voted, but not to the extent of fighting to abolish Parliaments, nor am I Squadrista. But I think it had its place in the Biennio Rosso and when José Antonio (son of previously mentioned Primo de Rivera) fought Caballero.

When I say Christian tradition, I'm aware that some Fascisms, worst of all perhaps National Socialism, or probably or probably certainly, were just playing around with it, much like Social Democratic Broderskapare or the part time Orthodox Church under Stalin. But this was not the case in all Fascisms, the Spanish ones got Freemasons out of and Catholic priests back into schools, and were defenders against Church looters and killers of bishops, of priests, of religious, also rapers and seducers of nuns. I don't think Perlasca regretted that part, defending the Church against those evils.

Too Much Psychiatry in Some Fascisms : Italy

Benito Albino Mussolini was abducted by government agents and was told that his mother was dead. In 1931, he was adopted as an orphan at 15 by the fascist ex-police chief of Sopramonte. Initially educated at a Barnabite college in Moncalieri,[4] he enrolled in the Italian Royal Navy and always remained under close surveillance by the fascist government. Nevertheless, he persisted in stating that Benito Mussolini was his father and eventually, he was forcibly interned in an asylum in Mombello, Province of Milan, where he died on 26 August 1942 after he was repeatedly given coma-inducing injections, at the age of 26. Ida and Benito were officially described as “a danger to themselves and others” but hospital records show that both of them were lucid.[3]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ida_Dalser

If Il Duce basically killed his son through shrinks, that reminds of the US, where the Kennedys destroyed the life of Rosemary.

I think every 20th C. régime, with few and small exceptions, had some evil side. Even Fascism.

Mussolini treated his political opponents (after the street fights ended in 1922 and before the Salò Republic) with more delicacy than his own son./HGL

What Do I Mean by Fascist?

New blog on the kid: Swedes are Not Likely to be Anti-Black Racists · What Do I Mean by Fascist? · Φιλολoγικά / Philologica: "Most Enlightenment Thinkers Were Christians"

If I call myself one, perhaps I don't agree with Umberto Eco's 14 points.

I think that a certain anti-Fascist on the right (more like an US Republican) made a valuable distinction.

  • Italian Fascism, National Socialism, Social Democracy are all related.
  • Italian Fascism is not more related to National Socialism and National Socialism not more related to Italian Fascism than each to Social Democracy.

So, what do all of these have in common? Following the first part of the distinction.

They have in common to reject both Capitalism of the extreme Manchester school, or even too uncomfortably close to it, and instead emphasise workers' rights, while at the same time also rejecting Communist expropriation and instead emphasising property rights. Or to put it shorter : all three try to conjugate respect for workers' rights with respect for property. Me four.*

So, where do they differentiate? Or where does Italian Fascism differentiate from the other two?

  • Italian Fascism as well as National Socialism reject the feminist heritage of Social Democracy, like promoting free sex without consequences, first promoting contraceptives, then later on even abortion.**
  • Italian Fascism as well as Social Democracy (at least previously) rejects mercy killing of the disabled.
  • Italian Fascism up to 1934 as well as Social Democracy reject Racism, while Italian Fascism from 1938 on, as well as National Socialism embace Racism.

On the last one, I'm with the early Mussolini, not the late one.

That's also the case with Spanish and Austrian Fascism, as well as with Portuguese and at least some Brazilian versions***

To be fair to Umberto, he doesn't list Racism as a feature of Fascism. Parts of what he does list are to me unfortunate accidents in Il Duce's version, specifically Il Squadrismo .... I was fortunately not involved in a civil war, like Il Biennio Rosso, so, I can definitely live without features like

3) The cult of action for action’s sake. “Action being beautiful in itself, it must be taken before, or without, any previous reflection. Thinking is a form of emasculation.”
4) Disagreement is treason. “The critical spirit makes distinctions, and to distinguish is a sign of modernism. In modern culture the scientific community praises disagreement as a way to improve knowledge.”
...
9) Pacifism is trafficking with the enemy. “For Ur-Fascism there is no struggle for life but, rather, life is lived for struggle.”
10) Contempt for the weak. “Elitism is a typical aspect of any reactionary ideology.”

But I definitely like points 1 and 2, though not the way he spells it out:

1) The cult of tradition. “One has only to look at the syllabus of every fascist movement to find the major traditionalist thinkers. The Nazi gnosis was nourished by traditionalist, syncretistic, occult elements.”
2) The rejection of modernism. “The Enlightenment, the Age of Reason, is seen as the beginning of modern depravity. In this sense Ur-Fascism can be defined as irrationalism.”

Syncretistic and occult elements are within Christendom very much the opposite of traditionalism. The Nazi Gnosis was less important in Nazism than mostly dechristianised Protestantism.°

Rejecting the Enlightenment is very much not irrationalist, because the Enlightenment itself was less rational than the Catholic "Superstition" it rejected. And remains so to this day.

I totally agree with the Inklings on that point, however much they may have agreed with Eco in exaggerating how important Nazi Gnosis was for National Socialism.

As to n° 6 "appeal to social frustration" — what ideology isn't doing so the last few centuries since the Enlightenment?/HGL

* Pun on "me too" sounding like "me two" ...
** My grandparents who were Social Democrats were so early enough to be it well before the abortion part, and to actually be disgusted by the change.
*** O Integralismo may have been regretted by Dom Helder Cámara as a "sin of youth" ... I'm not so sure. Except, of course, I'm not a fan of Gustavo Barroso's antisemitism, especially if he went further than Drumont.
° Statistics for the Waffen-SS corroborate what I said, on a video seen last month or two months, I got a break-down : c. 25 % each of Catholic and Gottesgläubig (that Nazi Gnosis was officially called so), c. 50 % of Evangelische, which unlike US Evangelicals in the German context doesn't mean very fervently Christian Protestants, but more like very moderately Christian and fervently progressive Protestants.

Preparing a Response to Claims on Italian Fascism 22 - 36

Contacted a certain Pavan Ilaria Pavan, and while preparing the email, the session, here at Georges Pompidou Library, was cut off, with a message it was being cut off for "abusive activity".

Saying Italian Fascism was pretty OK 22 to 36 would normally not be insulting to for instance Jews or any other ethnic group.

The Carta della Razza, from which I have more than once taken vehement distance, was in 1938.

So, Ilaria Pavan claims, what was happening 22 to 36 should still have warned Jews to leave.

She is cited by someone else, and her own paper I could not access. I sent her a mail asking if it and especially how it was in her opinion that bad. What certain very general enumerations of areas in the paper citing her actually mean.

Stating candidly "I never called myself Fascist before reading of the Mayor of Assisi" - she would know perfectly well he helped Fr. Ruffino Niccacci save Jews and he was a first hour Fascist - can not in any way, shape or form be taken as incitation to hatred againt Jews, very much the contrary, and with my Marrano background, except it's Nordic, such a thing would be inappropriate too.

However, some Jews over here seem to get collectively hysteric about my favourable view of early Fascism. Hence they may have taken my adressing this letter or Professor Pavan as an insult to her. They are also regularly not well read on topics like early Italian Fascism or like the Mayor of Assisi - but I have some confidence Professor Pavan is.

So, their hysteria could have led to the shutting down of a session, with results for which I asked Professor Pavan to excuse me.

Or, some security guard who is not a Jew. Or ... but this would not be possible, since I just wrote "Fascist" without the session shutting down ... automated shut down for use of that word. I think that can be eliminated, since lots of antifascists use it too and are arguably not censored over here.

Who Provided Refuge to Jews in Europe?

Here is a quote proposing Sweden was best:

By contrast, much of Protestant Europe heroically resisted. Tiny Denmark fought off the Third Reich to the utmost of its abilities, protecting its Jewish population by evacuating them to neutral Sweden and elsewhere. Finland successfully defended its independence in the face of both Soviet and German machinations. As for Sweden, home to Scandinavia’s largest Jewish population, few if any countries did more to oppose the Holocaust. Swedes provided sanctuary to over 7,000 Danish Jews and over tens of thousands of Hungarian Jews.

Remember When Fascism Was a Catholic Problem?
A historian’s perspective on religious dogma

As Hungarian Jews were mentioned, that refers to Raul Wallenberg.

However, when I bought a paperback about this hero, I noted that in Budapest, he and the Spanish diplomats were dividing the Jews between them : Ashkenazim to Sweden, Shephardim to Spain. It's years ago, but I have not forgotten.

As I don't recall the title of the book, here is a confirmation from elsewhere, via wiki, that Spain indeed did so. Franco's Spain.

During the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), the synagogues were closed and post-war worship was kept in private homes. Jewish public life resumed in 1947 with the arrival of Jews from Europe and North Africa.

In the first years of the World War II, "Laws regulating their admittance were written and mostly ignored."[71] They were mainly from Western Europe, fleeing deportation to concentration camps from occupied France, but also Jews from Eastern Europe, especially Hungary. Trudi Alexy refers to the "absurdity" and "paradox of refugees fleeing the Nazis' Final Solution to seek asylum in a country where no Jews had been allowed to live openly as Jews for over four centuries." [72]

Throughout World War II, Spanish diplomats of the Franco government extended their protection to Eastern European Jews, especially in Hungary. Jews claiming Spanish ancestry were provided with Spanish documentation without being required to prove their case and either left for Spain or survived the war with the help of their new legal status in occupied countries.

Once the tide of war began to turn, and Count Francisco Gómez-Jordana Sousa succeeded Franco's brother-in-law Serrano Súñer as Spain's foreign minister, Spanish diplomacy became "more sympathetic to Jews", although Franco himself "never said anything" about this.[71] Around that same time, a contingent of Spanish doctors travelling in Poland were fully informed of the Nazi extermination plans by Governor-General Hans Frank, who was under the misimpression that they would share his views about the matter; when they came home, they passed the story to Admiral Luís Carrero Blanco, who told Franco.[73]

Diplomats discussed the possibility of Spain as a route to a containment camp for Jewish refugees near Casablanca but it came to naught due to lack of Free French and British support.[74] Nonetheless, control of the Spanish border with France relaxed somewhat at this time,[75] and thousands of Jews managed to cross into Spain (many by smugglers' routes). Almost all of them survived the war.[76] The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee operated openly in Barcelona.[77]

Shortly afterwards, Spain began giving citizenship to Sephardic Jews in Greece, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Romania; many Ashkenazic Jews also managed to be included, as did some non-Jews. The Spanish head of mission in Budapest, Ángel Sanz Briz, saved thousands of Ashkenazim in Hungary by granting them Spanish citizenship, placing them in safe houses and teaching them minimal Spanish so they could pretend to be Sephardim, at least to someone who did not know Spanish. The Spanish diplomatic corps was performing a balancing act: Alexy conjectures that the number of Jews they took in was limited by how much German hostility they were willing to engender.[78]

Back to Ben Freeland.

The only Scandinavian country to truly succumb to fascist rule was Norway. Tiny Estonia and Latvia — which, like Finland, found themselves caught in the middle between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany — were unable to muster much in the way of resistance to the Reich. Latvia was unique among majority Protestant countries for nearly annihilating its Jewish population. Meanwhile, over 75 per cent of Estonia’s small Jewish community succeeded in escaping to the USSR.

Could it have sth to do with fortunes of war, with how Latvia and how Estonia were placed in relation to German troops or near or far from Russian such?

Estonia was next to Finland's attackers, the Red Army. Latvia was next to German expansion East, troups trying to go to Moscow.

When it comes to Jews from either country, I have a special place in my heart for Latvia. There was a konversa who was still Jewish (of Israelite confession) while marrying whom I honour.

Even Germany itself, as much a Lutheran country as a Catholic one, has a paradoxically lower Jewish mortality rate than many of the countries it occupied before and during World War II. In his superb book, The Meaning of Hitler, German historian Sebastian Haffner argues that Adolf Hitler’s antisemitism was more typical of his native Austria and Central-Eastern Europe than of Germany proper, and that his anti-Jewish policies enjoyed less widespread support at home than they did in many of the occupied territories.

Nevertheless, votes for Hitler in 1933 were higher in Protestant parts, like 90 % or more in Berlin. Because they hated Jews? No, but because they loved Hitler's progressive manners and thought Antisemitism was a way to get votes in Bavaria (Austria was not involved) and that he didn't mean it seriously.

Also, Hitler openly announced Antisemitism in 1933, when getting to power, but didn't get started all that much with camps prior to the war, so the German Jews had plenty of time to get elsewhere.

Also, when the French film Rafle came, a news article (LeMonde, I think) stated that Laval (the guy who delivered Jews to German camps) had stated he was proud the Jews were going to get "if not the love, at least the habit of hard work" - in other words, many people who sent Jews to German camps had the impression they were sending them to a Lao Gai, not to a death camp proper.

And Laval was not a devout Catholic:

Laval was born 28 June 1883 at Châteldon, Puy-de-Dôme, in the northern part of Auvergne. His father worked in the village as a café proprietor, butcher and postman; he also owned a vineyard and horses. Laval was educated at the village school in Châteldon. At age 15, he was sent to a Paris lycée to study for his baccalauréat. Returning south to Lyon, he spent the next year reading for a degree in zoology.[3]

Laval joined the Socialists in 1903, when he was living in Saint-Étienne, 62 km southwest of Lyon. "I was never a very orthodox socialist", he said in 1945, "by which I mean that I was never much of a Marxist. My socialism was much more a socialism of the heart than a doctrinal socialism... I was much more interested in men, their jobs, their misfortunes and their conflicts than in the digressions of the great German pontiff."[4]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre_Laval

Austrofascists may have had a greater dislike of Jews than National Socialists, but Austrofascists being devout Catholics, did not so much about it. Also, they defined Jew confessionally, so the few restrictions (no Lao Gai camps!) were not bothering konversos.

Freeman again:

Catholicism’s fascism problem did not go away at the end of World War II. While it did bring an end to the Nazi puppet states of central and eastern Europe, the neutral dictatorships of Franco and Salazar persisted until the mid-1970s.

And Franco and Salazar did not discriminate against Jews, and both had provided shelter for Jews. Freeman seems to like to jump back and forth between "fascism" and partifipation in German camps for Jews. As if they were equivalent, when they were not.

Also, Italy had few Jews deported to German camps, thanks both to first hour Fascists who did not like the turn to Racism in 1938, at least not as applied under Salò Republic, and, not least, to the Catholic population.

Get the book The Assisi Underground: Assisi and the Nazi Occupation, by Alexander Ramati. - I did not know about the Mayor of Assisi:

The rescue of Jews who sought refuge in Assisi, beginning in the spring of 1943, was organized by Bishop Placido Nicolini, his brother Ruffino Niacci, and Father Aldo Brunacci. Only Father Brunacci is alive today and was on hand for the ceremony of thanks. But the entire population of the village collaborated in the rescue, including its fascist Mayor, Amaldo Fortini.

I had never called myself a Fascist prior to reading about Amaldo Fortini. I do not regret it, since it involved lately also reading about Aldo Finzi. Ben Freeman is simply oversimplifying things to demonise more than can be tied to demonic behaviour, like putting Jews (or anyone else) into Lao Gai type or worse camps.

And if Jews seeking refuge started in 1943, this is because prior to 1943, Jews had not been in any danger in Catholic and Fascist Italy. Except of course the few who wanted to marry non-Jews, like when converting to Christianity, having to get somewhere else to do that since back in 1938. As I already stated elsewhere, Italian Fascism was at its best before Carta della Razza ... except for guys like Amaldo Fortini, of course.

I wonder where Ben Freeman earned his degrees in history ...? Wait, I have a hunch, he only studied Social Sciences to become a Secondary Education teacher. Such incompetence being encouraged is of course a wider, if less acute, argument against widespread near compulsory secondary schooling than Columbine High Shooting.

PS: I also read this on Canada:

Even in Canada, support for authoritarian and fascist ideas reached its pinnacle in uber-Catholic Québec. This was thanks in no small part to the ultramontane views of influential cleric-historian Lionel-Adolphe Groulx and the explosive rhetoric of journalist-turned-fascist-agitator Adrien Arcand. Even former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, that paragon of secular Canadian liberalism, acknowledged in his memoirs that his early education in the 1940s at the Jesuit-run Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf in Montreal instilled him with a positive view of Mussolini and other European Catholic Fascists of the era.

So, liking Mussolini is supposed to have been a worse problem than sterilising, maiming, unmanning or unwomanning, hundreds if not thousands of people who happened to be the wrong ethnicity in Alberta and in British Columbia? Authoritarian is then worse than Totalitarian to that author. Not to me. To me, authoritarian is no big deal, sometimes good, but totalitarian is evil./HGL

PPS, that was Ben Freeman again. And, if you did not get it, sterilisation by force is part of what I count as totalitarian, and it did not happen in Italy from 1922 to 1937, and probably not even from 1938 to the end./HGL

PPPS, sorry, it is not "Raul Wallenberg" but "Raoul Wallenberg" - French spelling of first name./HGL

https://www.huffingtonpost.fr/entry/la-canicule-a-fait-bouillir-les-tensions-entre-ruffin-et-rugy_fr_5d178218e4b07f6ca57e0cd9?utm_hp_ref=fr-homepage&ncid=tweetlnkfrhpmg00000001

If in Hendaye your reaction is "this is where Franco made Hitler feel uncomfy, serve him right" ....

... perhaps your Fascism is not National Socialism.

When I came up to Sysslebäck as teacher in Swedish and German for Autumn Term of 1995, I decided to keep quiet about being a Fascist of the Franco-friendly type. Why? People where alive who had fought in the International Brigades.

Some maths for now.

Suppose you are 100 years old, as very few are, how old were you in 1939? 20 years. Suppose you are 95, as some more, but still few, are, you were 15. If you were 15 in 1939, you probably were not a veteran from that war, especially not international brigades.

But in 1995, this was not so. There were people alive in 80's and 90's who had felt very strongly about fighting in those brigades. I have a mother who felt very strongly about geriatrics. A village is a place where things get out. I did not want to give old people a shock which might lead to a heart attack, just because they were fighting for a bad thing several decades earlier. Especially as Franco himself had not exactly wanted his international volunteers from England or Sweden to take part in arms : carrying the wounded or doing journalism was OK, but he didn't feel like bringing Spanish War elsewhere.

So, I happen to have some respect for the National Socialists who exist now in Sweden, on a personal level. I do not agree with their politics. I do not want to be confused with them, and they might not want to be confused with me.

Here is a homepage to a Swedish National Socialist movement*, not mine:

Back in certain times, the founder Engdahl was naive about National Socialism, he took his distance after learning about the camps, but he never took a distance from Mussolini.

The present day view of work, employment, wages, etc on this one has two huge references : Carta del Lavoro by Mussolini, 1927, and a similar policy statement by Juan Perón, Argentina. (Btw, to me "Argentinian fascist" means Perón, not Videla, and Videla I would rather class as something like a "Catholic" and Capitalist Stalinist, as "Catholic" as Stalin was Orthodox - except he went to Church, but I speak of his policies, and as Capitalist as the Commies are in China these days).

In 1992, I mourned for the demise of Engdahl. However, I take a certain distance, because Nysvenskar were not only involved in good aspects of Social Democracy, as Saltsjöbadsandan (in France that would be like "les Grenelles"), but also in one bad one, the eugenics program that lasted to the 70's. Germany can be thankful its eugenics program was in Hitler's régime, that way it ended 1945.

However, today the Nysvenskar do usually, like myself, take a distance from the eugenics program, partly because some of them are Catholic converts, like me.

I am afraid Nordfront might still advocate aborting a baby with Down's**. I only advocate getting fewer babies conceived with Down's by getting younger mothers, or, let's put it like this, if a woman starts getting children at 15 or 20 and has a baby with Down's at 40, getting more non-Down's babies first. That way the baby will grow up with older siblings that can take care of it.

Now, there are people in Paris who survived the camps. What Marcel Kling (if I recall the name correctly) went through was an atrocity. Should they feel ill about my preference for Franco over Azaña?

Let's put it like this, in a book about Raul Wallenberg, in Budapest, he gave Ashkenazi Jews Swedish passports, while Spanish Embassy (of the Franco régime, not of any Republican exile government), gave Sephardic Jews Spanish passports. You showed a key to a house in Spain which your ancestors had left 1492? You spoke some Djudezmo? Bienvenido a España, aquí el pasaporte. And they were not rigorous about checking.

So, no, I do not think someone who survived the camps should feel ill at ease about my support for Franco.

Back to 1995. No, I did not say to people in Sysslebäck I was pro-Franco. I told two people, both of whom very senior functionaries at the school. A little later, there was a rumour among some I was a Nazi and there was a rumour I was a paederast, a boylover. Both rumours were untrue. I wonder where those rumours came from. One possibility is one of the guys could have been ill at ease about my being pro-Franco and could have started a rumour cautiously and in a way so it could not be traced. Other possibility is, in Malmö it had been well known***, and there were freemasons both places, Malmö as well as Sysslebäck.

If Asperger was a Wellfunctioning Cog, in a Deadly Machine ...

  • ... what are other shrinks, later on? Must one physically kill to be deadly? Does provoking and sometimes forcing abortions count?
  • ... why would it be so terrible to be an Austrofascist, when in fact Asperger and Jekelius could start no killing before the Anschluß? Because they came to the clinic before, under Austrofascism? Well, even good and half-good fascisms were a bit blind about the evils of psychiatry! And it was not foreseen they would become killers. Or simply because even now some guys can't see the difference between Nazi and Austrofascist, between after and before Anschluß? Why then the horror of the Anschluß, if you think the régime before it was basically the same as the one after?
  • ... and third, do you know what "the cog" is in ASCII ...

T  84  080  04
H  72  150  06
E  69  210  15
C  67  270  22
O  79  340  31
G  71  410  32  442

Each of the six letters is lower case, add six tmes 32, and there is a space, add another 32. 7 * 32 = 224. So, for the very mathematically minded, what do you think 442 + 224 add up to?

For those not aware, I just read Russel Grigg's review mostly of a book called Asperger's Children, by Edith Sheffer.

Here is the link to the review:

Asperger's Children: The Origins of Autism in Nazi Vienna 1st Edition

Again, I take pride in being Austrofascist rather than Nazi, and in being against psychiatry and in having called out "Asperger's syndrome" as a fraudulent diagnosis, based on rubber definitions, on diagnostic criteria where the fulfilment or not of it would be judged according to personal predispositions of the one judging./HGL

Some Have Taken Tolkien for a Crypto-Fascist

While being patriotic, and while his son was fighting Italians in Ethiopia, he had some sympathy for Italians - but not for Hitler's Germany. He was a patriot for England - but not for British Parlamentarian Democracy. He considered in Hitler's Germany obedience was put to bad use, but he still considered it a virtue the English could learn from.

So, in a sense, even more if you extend "fascism" to include anything beyond Mussolini's original and its contributary Marinetti's Futurist Party (not quite Tolkien's glass of milk!), for instance Franco or Salazar, Tolkien was more or less fascist and not so crypto. He was against the Reds in the Spanish War.

The Orcs in The Hobbit (and later in Lord of the Rings) may well owe a thing or two to the Reds in Spain.

However, he also considered his books were not allegories. Some might take this as hypocritic, a bit like a record company accused of backmasking saying that in their record company all discs are turning one way only, forward - yes, but what about the magnetophone recordings before the actual discs? Well, I trust Tolkien for one, and for another, some who "decode" him are unusually inept at decoding allegories.

"Since their publication, many critics have labored to decode hidden allegories of real-world events in the adventures of the Fellowship. Because of its racial essentialism and black-and-white morality, Tolkien has often been accused of crypto-fascism."

  • There is absolutely no racial essentialism in Tolkien's work, beyond the level like "negros are musically talented" - which is not a very racialist thing to say and also has very little to do with Fascism in the general sense.

There is no "Gondoreans are good" or "men from Harad are bad". Men from Harad were misguided at the start of the war, but one task of Aragorn after it was helping them around in a peaceful way. Peaceful, a part from a decisive destruction of Satanism, that is. And men from Numenor have turned bad : the Ring Wraiths are all originally "Black Numenoreans", and black does not refer to skin colour, but to moral alignment, Denethor sank to Occultism, to Realpolitik and to despair, the kingdoms of the North became dominated by the Witchking Angmar, the foremost of the Nine Ring Wraiths. Hobbits too have sunk low, like Gollum and like Lotho Pimple, not forgetting Ferney. One part of the story is a Rosa Parks turn for the good of the people of Ghân-Buri-Ghân.

It is just that Numenoreans are longer lived and more intellectually talented than some others (Aragorn being a young warrior at 80, like Abraham in Genesis 14), they had the talents necessary for colonialism, and some used it well, others very ill.

Orcs and elves are not human races, and orcs are a twisted version of the elvish "race" or rather kind. No conclusions can be drawn from relation to Orcs or Elves to relations between human races.

And "sorry for the word" (ok, not too much), but it was in use in his day and not everyone using it was ideologically a racialist and he was not.

  • Black and White morality is certainly there in Tolkien - but that is the opposite of the Fascisms which went sour like curdled milk. Italian Fascism was beginning good mannered, up to O ... 79 years ago today, no, tomorrow, with the ban on mixed marriages between Italians (not Catholics) and Hebrews (not confessional Jews), against which, 79 years ago today, Pope Pius XI protested.

Why did it change? Because it believed in an evolving, not in a Black and White, morality.

Hitler's party North of the Alps had even less use for Black and White morality.

By contrast, Franco was preserving Spain from things like Sterilisation and Euthanasia, precisely because he believed, as a Catholic, in a Black and White morality.

So, in having this, Tolkien is actually, if not "antifascist" at least against the bad Fascisms. The nearly bad from start German workers' party, and the going bad Italian proto-version of it.

So, with yet another untalented reading of it as allegory about contemporary things, one can most usefully support Tolkien's aversion to allegory (at least to allegorical reading of his own works apart from Leaf by Niggle).

Nevertheless, while John Last is showing some ineptitude with the above quoted remark, I think that he is giving a not too bad story, which shows that Fascists doing Tolkien have some better inspiration than certain episodes of Mussolini or than Evola. A special bonus for pointing out a contrast between Tolkien and Evola:

"While Evola was theorizing a radical break with modernity, J.R.R. Tolkien was living it. After decades cloistered in the English department of a medieval university, rearranging the elements of Anglo-Saxon lore, Tolkien published The Hobbit, in 1937, followed, almost 20 years later, by The Lord of the Rings."

Mille grazie!

And as Evola might have dreamt of a Pagan antimodernity, Tolkien showed forth a Catholic Christian one, with no little Medieval tinge, not far from Pope St Pius X's Antimodernism.

I am much obliged. Due to this, I may simply state, I have been reading Tolkien for a very long time, especially in formative years and the last years before leaving my last adress in Sweden, I have not been paying attention to Evola and don't intend to too much.
