What is the Atonement?

How this Church Father Made Me Rethink the Atonement

He's started out as a Protestant, he's discovering Catholic truth bit by bit.

The First Adam was abandoned by God. The Last Adam's human nature asks if this is really necessary any more (meaning it isn't, Christ has already made it superfluous)./HGL

PS, may I give a medical / pharmaceutical analogy?

Not one which requires much specialist competence, simply a thing I learned when I was small. Snakes biting horses won't kill them. But the horse has an immune system that not just will immobilise the snake poison for the horse itself, but will also allow those tapping the horse's blood serum to produce an effective antidote against snake bites.

He bore our sins in His own flesh, as a horse bears snake poison in its system. Not sinning, because He is God, He made all of His body and human soul angry at sin, and created the antidote of innocence.

This is why one should confess or decide to confess before partaking of His Body: so that this anger is not turned against you. If you are repented and absolved, it enters you and drives sin out./HGL
