Russia and US - Abortions

New blog on the kid: Russia and US - Abortions · Φιλολoγικά / Philologica: Charlotte of Savoy married the future Lewis XI of France when she was 9 - what about her ancestry? · What is Going On Back in the Middle Ages?

Let's give the word to wiki, first on Russia:

Despite a significant reduction in the abortion to birth ratio since the mid-1990s, the countries of the former Soviet Union maintain the highest rate of abortions in the world. In 2001, 1.31 million children were born in Russia, while 2.11 million abortions were performed.[33] In 2005, 1.6 million abortions were registered in Russia;[4] 20% of these involved girls under the age of 18.[34] Official statistics put the number at 737,948 in 2016.*

Then on United States:

By 2011, abortion rate in the nation dropped to its lowest point since the Supreme Court legalized the procedure. According to a study performed by Guttmacher Institute, long-acting contraceptive methods had a significant impact in reducing unwanted pregnancies. There were fewer than 17 abortions for every 1,000 women of child-bearing age. That was a 13%-decrease from 2008's numbers and slightly higher than the rate in 1973, when the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision legalized abortion. The study indicated a long-term decline in the abortion rate.[110][111][112][113]

In 2016, the CDC reported 623,471 abortions, a 2% decrease from 636,902 in 2015.[114]**

As some people are allergic to wikipedia, it can be noted that I will in the footnotes show the footnotes of the wikipedian articles.

Now, obviously Russia is worse than United States, but there is one thing more to it: in Russia, a young woman who gets pregnant is more likely to be pressured into abortion. Or, as some evil feminists would have it, less likely to be pressured not to have an abortion.

Teen mothers are better seen in US than in Russia.

Between 2000 and 2015, over 200,000 minors were legally married in the United States,[10] or roughly six children per thousand.[11] The vast majority of child marriages in the U.S. were between a minor girl and an adult man.[10][12][13] Most minors married were girls.[10] In many cases, minors in the U.S. may be married when they are under the age of sexual consent, which is 16 to 18 for most states.[14] In some states minors cannot legally divorce, leave their spouse, or enter a shelter to escape abuse.[15][16]***

One story features a rapist marrying his victim of 13 and her being pregnant.

In Czarist Russia, that could have happened too.

In Putin's Russia, well, the article "Child marriage in Russia" doesn't even exist in English wikipedia. Here is from another article:

The minimum marriageable age in Russia is 18 years old. However, in some regions, it is common practice for teens to marry before the age of 18. Some may even marry as young as 14 years of age. For instance, in Moscow, the legal marriageable age is 16 and in Bashkortostan, it is 14, with underage marriages in Chechnya as well. In recent years, the idea of child marriage in Russia has sparked legal and social disputes between various communities.

In 2015, Putin lowered the legal age of marriage to 14 in Bashkortostan. This dropped the age of consent for special circumstances like teen pregnancy. However, the number of marriages is reportedly rising as teen pregnancies are increasing. Moreover, the public has agreed to the lowering of the age of consent. This brings up the issue that lowering the age exploits children. The problem extends in regions across Russia that are predominately traditionalists in their views and do not have close monitoring like in the northern and southern Caucasus regions.°

I think it is a very good thing that Putin did so. However, I think it would be better if he did so all over the federation, and for girls even one year or two years lower. In many states of the US, including Florida, this is already so. Or actually, still so.

If at any given point 20 % of abortions in a very abortive country are due to the mother being under 18, arguably being against teen marriages is one of the problems leading to such high abortion rates.

Most of the sources wiki linked to were left leaning and as such against "child" marriage. It should be obvious, I am relying on them for hard facts, but disagreeing with that evaluation.

  1. Russia:
    2016 1,888,700 live births
    2016 737,948 abortions
737,948+1,888,700 = 2,626,648 pregnancies terminated one way or the other.
This means, abortions were, on their own statistics, 281 abortions per 1000 pregnancies.

    US:
    2016 3,945,875 live births
    2016 623,471 abortions
623,471+3,945,875 = 4,569,346 pregnancies terminated one way or the other.
This means, according to CDC, abortions were 136 per 1000 pregnancies.

  2. Wait, perhaps the statistic is rather "per 1000 live births"
    737,948 / 1,888,700 * 1000 = 391 in 2016 in Russia
    623,471 / 3,945,875 * 1000 = 158 in 2016 in US

In 2018, the same type of statistics gave:

    Bulgaria 380, Georgia 375, Moldova 364, Romania 359, Russia 353
Hungary and Sweden come between 350 and 300, with 327 and 317

Croatia had 67 and Poland 3

  3. Ukraine (2018) had less than above worst 7 offenders, namely 247 abortions per 1000 live births.

Let's correct the stats for Russia, namely from "per pregnancies" to "per live births".

    2016 stats as cited above give 737948 / 1888700 * 1000 = [390.71742468364] 391

2018 this was 353. But still more than 100 more than Ukraine.
