What Happens if John Henry Newman is Declared Doctor of the Church by Vatican II-ists?

The problem is, An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine.

Even more, what this work is supposed to mean.

"Yeah, in 1800 all Catholics believed the world was from 4004 or 5199 or 5500 BC, now we (sic !) believe in Evolution" ...

OK, isn't that contradictory?

"No, not really, it's development of doctrine, Cardinal Newman wrote about it."

The problem with that argument is, when Cardinal Newman wrote it, he was barely a Catechumen. He was told to write the reasons he had to convert, as they appeared to him as an Anglican. He wrote it before he had proper Catholic instruction, and part of what he's saying actually depends on the idea that there is less explicit early support for some Catholic dogmas than there is. As he had learned the case in the Church of England.

This may not always be helpful to include in his carreere as a Church doctor. After all, everything that St. Thomas Aquinas wrote, he wrote as already Catholic since day 8 after he was born.

But another problem is, will people know what he means, will they read the actual work? Because, as I recall some things, accepting Deep Time would at least by now not be according to the criteria Newman set forth.

I maybe should reread it to make sure.

But anyway, with St. Augustine people also play the game of "he wasn't young earth creationist, he said ..." and then citing the absolutely most quotemined passage in De Genesi ad Litteram Libri XII.

If you read through books 12 to 17 of City of God, you'll see that St. Augustine was Young Earth Creationist as it applies to time from Adam on, at least. And if you get a chance of reading De Genesi ad Litteram Libri XII, whether your Latin is that good, or, for rustier like me, or even non-Latinists, a Budé or Loeb edition, go to books 4 to 6 and see how St. Augustine in not favouring strict adherence to six literal days, actually doesn't lengthen time, but shorten it. 168 hours exchanged for 1 second or less. So, he was a Young Earth Creationist.

I think, but I should check first, that sth similar applies to An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine.

Environ 1/2, je me souviens 51 %, étaient Protestants.

Sicherheitsdienst des Reichsführers-SS (or SD) members withdrew from their Christian denominations, changing their religious affiliation to gottgläubig, while nearly 70% of the officers of the Schutzstaffel (SS) did the same.

Religion in Nazi Germany # Denominational trends during the Nazi period
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_in_Nazi_Germany#Denominational_trends_during_the_Nazi_period

State University of New York George C. Browder Professor of History College of Freedonia (1996). Hitler's Enforcers : The Gestapo and the SS Security Service in the Nazi Revolution. Oxford University Press. pp. 166–. ISBN 978-0-19-534451-6. Retrieved 14 March 2013.

After coming to power in 1933, the upper cadres of the Nazi Party concluded that their worldview was incompatible with Christianity, even if it was considered too risky to state this publicly; because of this, the party was still committed to Positive Christianity on paper.

PPPS.

A question, Sir.

Does Young Earth Creationism add value to your life?

If it does, I think you should care. Whether you believe it's correct, are curiously on the fence or passionately opposed, but not into the marginalising tactics.

If it doesn't, you are not the kind of person (I don't mean "mental type" or "genomic type", I mean social type) whom I'm writing for, and so you are not in a position to tell me whether my writing will or won't add something to someone's life.

Oh, I'm solving more than one problem in Young Earth Creationism ...

It seems you have a tendency to limit essay writing to personal (real life) experience.

I HAVE heard a story, which I have never verified either by history or topography, otherwise known as being on the spot, to the effect that the French Academy accepted the accident of the absence of Molière from its records with a magnificent gesture. It may have been only a tradition about something that somebody planned to do; it may even have been only a tale of somebody about what ought to be done; but it is exactly the sort of tradition that would represent the nation; and it is exactly the sort of thing that Frenchmen would or could have done. The French Academy, founded by Richelieu for the establishment of classical literature in the country, naturally passed over a wandering play-actor and playwright like Molière; just as Oxford and Cambridge would have passed over a wandering play-actor and playwright like Shakespeare. But here the story, even if it is only a story, strikes the note that only the French can strike. For it was said that the French Academy erected in its inner courts a special statue of Molière, with the inscription “Rien ne manque à sa gloire; il manque à la notre” ... and if you want to know what is the difference between the atmosphere of France and England, both of them very jolly atmospheres in their way, you have only to imagine anybody making, or even anybody suggesting, a public apology of that sort to Shakespeare. Can you imagine a huge statue of Shakespeare in Balliol Quad, inscribed with the statement, “Shakespeare never went to Balliol.” Can you conceive even Cambridge rearing a colossal monument to Dickens, to celebrate the fact that he never had a University education — or indeed any other education? If that story about Molière is true, or even if it is a true parable or fable, there is an obvious moral to the fable. The English rather ignore defeats; the French rather exaggerate defeats; but the French do sometimes have the talent of snatching victories out of defeats.

I HOPE it is not a secret arrogance to say that I do not think I am exceptionally arrogant; or if I were, my religion would prevent me from being proud of my pride. Nevertheless, for those of such a philosophy, there is a very terrible temptation to intellectual pride, in the welter of wordy and worthless philosophies that surround us to-day. Yet there are not many things that move me to anything like a personal contempt. I do not feel any contempt for an atheist, who is often a man oflimited and constrained by his own logic to a very sad simplification. I do not feel any contempt for a Bolshevist, who is a man driven to the same-negative simplification by a revolt against very positive wrongs. But there is one type of person for whom I feel what I can only call contempt. And that is the popular propagandist of what he or she absurdly describes as Birth-Control.

LAST year, the representative of all that remains of the Holy Roman Empire was murdered by the barbarians. As an atrocity it has been adequately denounced; and it breeds in some of us rather a dumb sort of disgust, almost as if it had been done not by barbarians but by beasts. Perhaps the only further fact to be noted, on that side, is the fact that this is the only kind of effort in which these clumsy people are not merely clumsy. The Nordic man of the Nazi type in Germany is a very slow thinker, and incredibly backward and behind the times in science and philosophy. That is why, for instance, he clings to the word “Aryan,” as if he were his own great-grandfather laboriously poring over the first pages of Max Muller, under the concentrated stare of the astounded ethnologists of later days. He is slow in a great many things; as, for instance, in releasing prisoners who are admittedly innocent; or in answering questions put by foreign critics or Catholic bishops. We have good reason to know that he is slow in paying his debts; to the point of ceasing to pay them. He is very slow in bringing about the Utopia that he promised to the German people; the complete financial stability and the total disappearance of unemployment. He is slow in a thousand things, from the length of his meals to the lengthiness of his metaphysics. But in one thing he is not slow but almost slick. He is swift to shed innocent blood; he really has a certain technique in the matter of murdering other people; and the prospect of this sport alone can move him to an animation that is almost human. Hitler really killed quite a creditable number of people for one week-end holiday; and the assassination of Dollfuss did show some touch of that efficiency, which the Nazis once promised to display in other fields of activity

These incipits are from three essays within The Well and the Shallows, an essay collection by Gilbert Keith Chesterton.

He is NOT speaking about his personal experience, or only tangentially, like in introducing the subject (I have heard a story).

My blogs are not this.

I own the texts.

Blogger owns my possibility of keeping them here. But not the texts themselves.

I have licenced them* for anyone who wants to print into material books, individual supports, which by definition you can keep and do what you will with once you acquire them by production, gift, purchase.

That's one reason why I do not try to publish my works as e-books, which, if on kindle, as Nicole said, Amazon could just withdraw, selectively from some or wholesale for all.

If I get 100 books into print of some collection**, and a Fahrenheit 451 scenario occurs, I'd like for it to be a chance that some random copy survived on a plane journey across an Ocean, or across a frontier (not sure whether the book refugee would go North or South across the Rio Grande or Tijuana) or whatever.

Yes, the version I am creating right now is digital. I have traditional property over it, referred to as copyright, and it can be translated to traditional property in the low-tech physical support sphere (if you call printing and binding a book low-tech, it's at least low-tech to keep it in your possession and access it***.)

"You can't be against it; nobody can be against it," Archer had cried. "It's simply a Bill to introduce a little more humanity into asylums."

"I know it is," his friend had replied, with some gloom. "It introduces a lot more humanity into asylums. That's exactly what it does do. You'll hardly believe it, but there's quite a lot of humanity still that doesn't want to be introduced into asylums." But he recalled the story chiefly because Archer and the newspapers had congratulated each other on another new feature rather relevant to the present case. This was the greater privacy of the proceedings. A special sort of magistrate would settle all such cases in an interview as private as a visit to a physician.

* He could have meant Hitler, whose beginning involved Oranienburg as soon as 1933. That's 92 years ago. And Mrs. Goebbels somewhat later was OK with her father or stepfather being treated that way. "Incidentally" he died. The horror of it.

Have You Read A Delayed Life?

Dita Kraus, back then Polachová did not lose either father or mother into gas chambers.

But she did lose both.

The father died in typhoid fever.

The mother was malnourished and overworked and, if I recall correctly, ate too much when the Brits came in, and died of that.

I consider the NS administration as culpable of their deaths, and her humiliation (and some were humiliated or even scared worse).

Obviously, her case is multiplied by the thousands or millions.

Now, in Auschwitz, adequate means to clean barracks (notably fast cleaning away any trace of typhoid diarrhaea) and eat properly were denied to Jews. Some NS nostalgics pretend "not the fault of the administration, the Allies bombed supplies, and Jews were made to share "their part" of the resulting hardships. Well, Jews were still being held there against their will, denied to exit to less dangerous and impoverished zones. I can't exonerate National Socialism of innocent deaths. There is a reason, while I have often called myself Fascist over the decades, or Carlist or Austro-Fascist, with my support for Mussolini usually stated as "up to 1938" (carta della razza, I'm against it.), I have NOT called myself a National Socialist. In Sweden Fascist (Nysvenskar) and National Socialist (Nordfront) are two different movements.

Now, perhaps you can guess why I would not take up calling myself a Zionist. All eyes to Gaza, please! Meanwhile, it seems a Norwegian lady of 70 who came with the Handala is being charged (probably in the most fraudulent and mendacious manner known to the former East Block) with smuggling Cannabis. Reuters and AT have not reported on the story, only Israeli media have. How long will Vigdis remain in captivity? Is Netanyahu trying to take a hostage or more of his own as bargaining chip for the remaining hostages?

Frank Turek. On this* video, says this:

[0:34] Of course, I believe in a historical [0:35] atom and I think God created Adam out of [0:37] the dust just like it says. ... When that happened, I [0:47] don't know.

If he believes in an Old Earth, I bet he doesn't.

If the atmosphere was old, when a certain Neanderthal breathed, or, since the carbon dioxide is what he breathed out, not in, when he ate food that had recently done photosynthesis or eaten plants, the carbon 14 level of his food should have been close to if not at 100 pmC. We see wiggles in the pmC for carbon dates I totally agree with.

The problem can be restated. Was Adam created before or after that Neanderthal?

If before, how is Adam not 40 000 + years before the present?

If after, how is he ancestral to all men, since Neanderthals are ancestral to most or all men?

Now, if Adam lived 40 000 years BP, or rather even longer back than that, how is:

  • Genesis 3 not myth or prophecy rather than history?
  • or God fair in His promise of the woman and her seed?

You may consider there is no problem with Genesis 3 being not history. It could be prophecy, right? Wrong, two reasons.

  • There is no tradition whatsoever of Moses having a vision of Genesis 3 (there is one of his having a vision of the creation days, if so, Genesis 1 is basically what Moses saw, Genesis 2 what Adam and Eve remembered ... provided it wasn't 36 500 years or more before the Exodus, of course), and therefore we have no actual reason to regard Genesis 3 as prophecy. For Genesis 1 there is not just a commonsense one, but an actual tradition, hinted at, I think, in Jubilees.
  • If Moses could access the correct details of Genesis 3 from prophecy, how come he got the trade of Adam wrong, or put metallurgy too soon after Adam or how come he got the generations between Adam and Noah, Noah and Abraham way too few?

So, the alternative to Genesis 3 being history is Genesis 3 being neither history, nor prophecy, but myth.

Now the other problem.

God had in Genesis 2:17 compared the lifespan of Adam after sinning to "one day" ... "same day" implying one day, or less than its full length. With that measure, Jesus arrived on the sixth day. Oh, using some kind of LXX chronology of course, with Masoretic / Vulgate chronology, He came late in the fourth or early in the fifth day. That's a reasonable time to wait, especially if Adam also had a vision of Genesis 1 and knew he had been created himself on the sixth day. Finally, only the Jews remembered this. Meaning the Second Temple Jews. But it had been faithfully transmitted orally, as well as the events, to Abraham coming sixth generation with "minimal overlap" ... let me explain. The next generation after Adam that has minimal overlap with him is not Seth, it's the last generation that was born before he died.

LXX without II Cainan

Adam dies 930, the last born before 930 is Mahalaleel born in 795. He overlaps with Adam 135 years.
Mahalaleel dies in 1690. The last born before that is Noah born in 1642.
Noah dies in 350 after the Flood, the last born before that is Eber, born 267.
Eber dies 771 after the Flood, the last born before that is Sarug, born 663.
Sarug dies 993 and Abraham was already born in 942 after the Flood.

From Genesis 12, the chapters become longer, which suggests they weren't originally orally transmitted as previous ones, but written down on papyrus or clay or whatever Abraham used from the go. So, the earlier chapters (minus 1:1 to 2:4 which were revealed to Moses), including the timeline, were written down after five overlaps between six minimally overlapping generations. That's a reasonable scope for oral transmission. Compare between Trojan War and Homer, if a "bard"** recorded snippets of story from homecoming or defeated warriors*** soon after the event, and he was 20, if he then lived to 80, and if the last generation of new bards he effectively raised were born when he was 60, the same amount of oral transmission would be there from events in 1179 BC to Homer composing a kind of wiki with multiple contributors in 750 BC.

So, the transmission is reasonable, and all along this transmission, one could reasonably hope that 1) the Redeemer would come the sixth "day", and that 2) this would be in time to defeat the Devil. That time was if so shortened so that not every Second Temple Jew should fall to temptations and damnation before the Catholic Church was born on Calvary.°

With a waiting time of 40 000 + years, this is not so. Hope would have been given up, promise would have been forgotten. There would be tens of thousands of years in which no one made it to salvation, because no one had heard the proto-Gospel and put his hope on God sending a woman and her seed to trample on a serpent. Perhaps that doesn't bother you, perhaps you think there were centuries of the Middle Ages when no one was saved. But I'm Catholic. The single one and same Church that Jesus founded is in visible continuity still on earth, it has not revived by rebelling against the papacy and the bishops and the councils and the scholastics. It was never gone. Same thing for the patriarchal Church, even Abraham was not starting it wholly anew, he had heard the truth from Sarug when he was up to 50 years old. And perhaps even from Thera up to when he was 75, him leaving in that case after his physical father spiritually died by becoming an idolater.°° The idea of 10 000 years with no visible continuity between Adam and Noah or Noah and Abraham is intolerable.

God doesn't do that. I'm not considering Vatican II as a Catholic council, most probably, but the paragraph 3 of Dei Verbum°°° is spot on, and you'd wreck the first part:

God, who through the Word creates all things (see John 1:3) and keeps them in existence, gives men an enduring witness to Himself in created realities (see Rom. 1:19-20). Planning to make known the way of heavenly salvation, He went further and from the start manifested Himself to our first parents. Then after their fall His promise of redemption aroused in them the hope of being saved (see Gen. 3:15) and from that time on He ceaselessly kept the human race in His care, to give eternal life to those who perseveringly do good in search of salvation (see Rom. 2:6-7).

We would obviously agree on the second part:

Then, at the time He had appointed He called Abraham in order to make of him a great nation (see Gen. 12:2). Through the patriarchs, and after them through Moses and the prophets, He taught this people to acknowledge Himself the one living and true God, provident father and just judge, and to wait for the Savior promised by Him, and in this manner prepared the way for the Gospel down through the centuries.

So, Adam being created 40 000 + years ago, that won't work.

How about Adam being created 7200 years ago, as the chronology I use clearly suggests? BUT with old earth and all dating methods accepted? So, still dating for instance a given Neanderthal to 40 000 + years BP, or Cheddar man to 8300 BC?

In that case it would be problematic to say he was ancestral to Amerindians and to Aboriginees when the Europeans arrived! You'd be making the case for KKK who believe White Men only descend from Adam. The Catholic Church condemned that position when the writing of Isaac La Peyrère was put on the Index in the 17th C. pretty soon after it was locally condemned by Jean de Wachtendonck on Jan. 3rd 1656. Unfortunately, the Index Librorum in the last edition from 1948 which was a site, has been taken off the internet, I cannot verify the exact moment when a congregation in Rome added it to the next edition of the Index. Nope. Jesus died for Black, Yellow, Red and White, because Adam sinned as ancestor of Black, Yellow, Red and White.

Or, you could pretend "carbon dates don't mean anything" ... despite the fact that of all the dating methods, carbon dating is the only one with a high degree of matches checkable by other means. For someone checking for petrol, you don't need to know the exact number of millions of years, you just need to know it's shale (a specific type of rock, I think of calcar) and that it's "millions of years old" ... carbon 14 is used to detect forgeries, like paintings~ or sculptures, and check if such and such a skeleton could belong to this or that historic figure. Since the time when carbon 14 is roughly 100 pmC, it works. We can check that as far back as when we have written chronologies. Or as far back as Troy. The historic date transmitted through the aoidoi (or bards) to Eratosthenes~~ matches the carbon date for one of the levels of Troy.

But for back in the time of Ötzi, we cannot check that that way. If the world is young, like 7000 + years, the carbon level might have still been not 100 pmC but rising towards that value in his day.~~~ However that only works if the atmosphere is young, otherwise, if it was older than 30 000 years, the carbon 14 level would already have reached c. 100 pmC, which one may suppose is the equilibrium point between carbon 14 forming at a certain addition from the outside of the atmosphere and carbon 14 decaying by multiplication by a specific value lower than 1 for a specific time period. 0.5 for 5730 years. 0.707 for 2865 years. 0.841 for 1433 years. 0.917 for 716 years .... each time you half the time, you square root the decay factor. In c. 30 000 years, maximally, that reaches equilibrium, and the solution I propose needs the equilibrium to have been reached very recently. I also propose it reached equilibrium quicker, the production was hastened while God produced shortening of lifespans and an ice age by more radioactivity than we'll see, overall even more than an atomic war, but more drawn out in time, at least prior to heaven and earth passing away in fire. So, a world younger than 30 000 years, even if equilibrium was reached, allows Adam AND ALL HUMAN REMAINS to be within the last 7200 years. It puts Mungo man about halfway between the Flood and Babel, and the earliest human visit (but not remains) to the Americas in that same time span, and Clovis culture a bit later, but still pre-Babel.

And if you believe Genesis 14 is history, my solution also allows a date of c. 1935 BC (when Abraham was c. 80 years) to be carbon dated, as evacuation of En Geddi has been carbon dated, to 3500 BC. But again, after carbon dating, it only works with a "young" earth.

PS, the video involves 4 good arguments against macro-evolution, but unfortunately pretends we cannot know when Adam lived, basically at all, or reject an old earth, and also pretends that Jesus' death and resurrection makes as much sense if Adam's sin was in a totally different setting, basically, which is not true./HGL

~ You may have heard of a painting in South Africa carbon dated to 10 000 years old. It so happens, modern oil paintings also use acrylic colour as a fast way of making some detail glossy, and acrylic is a kind of plastic, so, uses OLD carbon. When you mix old carbon from acrylic with new carbon from linen and from whatever oil was used, you get a medium age. Like 10 000 years.

Trump Seems to be Bitter for the "Lack of Gratitude"

Perhaps he hasn't heard the news that Gaza Humanitarian Fund was partly used as a booby trap, to get hungry people shot.*

The story of absentee landowners, tenant Fellaheen, and new Jewish landowners not respecting the right of whole villages has led to me being stamped as a Marxist and Antisemite.

Marxist, because I agree with the Thomist principle that the rights of a community go before the rights of private ownership or other individual rights.

Antisemite, because I said this amounted to Jews practically stealing the land. They had lawfully acquired a right to receive rent, not to displace the previous tenants.

According to this one, the Fellaheen were not always tenants even to begin with, but sometimes actual landowners.

Is Anyone Imagining I Would Want to Become a Jew?

For some reason I get this recommendation:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcx1C8JYXlE

In converting to CATHOLICISM (starting age 16, completing a few months before 20), there were schedualled meetings, and I usually didn't miss any. With a Catholic teacher. With a group hearing a Jesuit in a city 32 to 41 km awazy, depending on route. And the final year, with a priest in a chapel a few blocks away. I got good at walking.

But there were no updates. However, after converting, I was a regular penitent with that priest up to my military service, for about a year, a regular penitent with another one after military service, up to becoming a trad, and putting the sacramental life (but not the prayer life) on the backburner, and was a penitent with a priest at St. Nicolas du Chardonnet many years later for 2009 to 2011 or 2012, so, two years.

I did not intend to reassess my conversion to Catholicism for a conversion to Judaism in 2009. I don't do so now.

And if any marriage, even to a girl I really like, would involve people telling me to convert to Judaism for her, I'd answer "no, you convert to Catholicism."

I am very far from being fed up with Catholicism, though I have had more than my fair share of runins or other unpleasantness with Catholics, including clergy, and I am even further from being in despair about Catholic dogma being true, I actually find apologetics is one of the hobbies (or actual works, but with a great deal of pleasure) that I'm allowed to do. I'd like it even better if I were allowed to get partners like printers and make money from that work by selling books.

And no, Judaism is not a religion I was raised in to exclusion of others, so my conversion story doesn't even impinge on Judaism that much. In fact, I chose Catholic over Orthodox, somewhat immaturely, the only immaturity of my conversion, partly because Catholics consider unleavened bread (but less crumbly than matzot!) is a proper matter for a sacrament, and Orthodox say, it must be leavened bread to distance us from Judaism. It's in my reversion from Romanian Orthodoxy that I did more proper research into Filioque, Immaculate Conception, and also that Jesus actually did hold a Seder on the Last Supper (Matthew 26:19, Mark 14:12) — Caerularius claimed the opposite. And finally papacy. My teens preference had been partly due to feudal principles. I later doubted, "what if Kallistos Ware was right and papacy is a byproduct of the imperial post of the feudal society?" My historic knowledge now, no, papacy was not invented as a reflex of feudalism. Papacy existed very definitely before Charlemagne (Orthodox will even cite Pope Leo III as a reason against Charlemagne), but feudalism came after him.

So, no, I have no need to convert to Judaism. I really question why the video was recommended to me./HGL

As it is, when it comes to the observations about starvation, we have an Israeli patriot's word for it.

If Handala and journalists had freedom, we might have witnesses from the West, less suspect of bias or indeed having the opposite bias.

I'm not sure his observations about the Gazawis are totally fair, regardless of the starvation situation.

I'm also not sure there were no Jews released from Auschwitz by making a peace deal with NS Germany. And humiliation over 20 + years is longer than humiliation between 1940 and 1945. Bitterness is not always only about starvation./HGL

I can also say, as close to two medical practitioners, I did not want to hasard an opinion of my own on the existence or not of that kind of disease, but I have searched and so far not found any genetic disease leading to the victims getting skinny and starving despite the presence of adequate food. I saw several video captions about a disease, genetic, leading to constant hunger. The images didn't show skinny people, so I suppose it doesn't emaciate you./HGL

Over the last decade, the number of births registered fell from 67,462 in 2014 to 54,062 in 2024.
The number of deaths registered in 2024 was 35,173, which was 286 fewer than the 2023 figure of 35,459.

54,062 born and 35,173 dead in 2024. 18,889 more born than dead.

In France, I just read in Rivarol, France between May 2024 and May 2025 for twelve consecutive months had lower birth rates than death rates. 651 200 died versus 650 400 were born. 800 more died than were born./HGL

Would it be fair to compare Franco to him?**

Thus, Franco and his ministers promulgated the Ley de Viviendas de Renta Limitada of 1954 and the Ley de Arrendamientos Urbanos of 1964, whereof the preamble said:

«The movement to liberalise urban property has to be tempered, not only by the rhythm determined by the economic circumstances of the country, but also by the unavoidable exigence of social justice, which constitute the marrow and reason of being of our political régime. To these overarching principles respond the present reform of the Ley de Arrendamientos Urbanos, a reform which, naturally, cannot consist in the simple and immediate turning around of the juridical system proper to Common Law, while this is not modified to adapt it to the imperatives of our epoch; since we have not yet reached the indispensable economic maturityni se ha logrado satisfacer la necesidad de vivienda por importantes sectores de la sociedad española, nor has one obtained the satisfaction of the necessity of a place to live for important sectors of Spanish society, despite the considerable effort that was realised and the manifest growth obtained during this last decade.».

What was the result?**

Despite the types of interest being very high, the price of the apartments was very reasonable, and more or less everyone could buy himself a small apartment in accordance with his Economic Situation. This, about 77.8 % of the Spanish owned there own house.

Four million new houses from 1961 to 1975. And some more up to 1980. In these days, the majority of the Spanish could have a house paid off in 8 to 10 years, despite interest rates of 10 %. Rents were frozen and contracts needed to be indefinitely prolonged. This was broken only by Partido Socialista Obrero Español. So, I would say Franco was more Bernie Sanders than the Spanish Socialists after him turned out to be. He was not exactly known for chasing homeless into facilities. Or for wasting money on "professionals" ..../HGL

50 Christians Gruesomely Murdered in Nigeria

Christians killed like Burnt Njáll.

In 1000, he counselled Iceland to become Catholic, which it became by decision of the Allthing. 15 or 20 years later, his sons who had been brought up worshipping Odin and Thor, who had had no Christian upbringing, were to be killed this way, because of a feud they got themselves into. The revenge thirsty people who took them down offered Njáll to get out. He refused to survive his sons. So, all of them were killed like Christians in Nigeria. Except the daughters and their brother Kári.

Check the video for details. On the modern case. Or the article about Njál on wiki:

By the way, thanks to Iceland being Roman Catholic, the aftermath ends in reconciliation./HGL

PS. Or check this link, to the actual text in English:

PPS, a witness from Nigeria reflects on "Allah akbar", and I leave this comment:

It means "God is greater" ... it's a truncated citation of the Bible.

For if our heart reprehend us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
[1 John 3:20]

It's actually also a not truncated (in sense) citation of Eliud who was not the wisest man in the book of Job:

Now this is the thing in which thou art not justified: I will answer thee, that God is greater than man
[Job 33:12]

At the end, God Himself said He disagreed with Eliud.

Are Catholic Clergy Helping to Make Knowledge Flat?

New blog on the kid: Are Catholic Clergy Helping to Make Knowledge Flat? · Correspondence of Hans Georg Lundahl: Me and Jacobus de Bruyn on Heliocentrism / Geocentrism and Sovereignty of God · Assorted retorts from yahoo boards and elsewhere: Ascension and Geocentrism (Contra Ortlund and Torrence)

Today we don't ask 2:07 the muses for help we ask notion and 2:09 notion answers but it doesn't remember 2:10 in the way memory used to function it 2:12 doesn't remind you when it matters it 2:14 doesn't bring context to bear unbidden 2:16 it doesn't knit the disparate events of 2:17 your week into a coherent thread it just 2:19 returns what you've tagged memory is not 2:22 recall it's recursion it's what allows 2:24 thoughts to become beliefs and beliefs 2:26 to become character when you offload 2:28 memory you sever that recursive loop and 2:29 you make knowledge flat this is not a 2:31 nostalgic complaint although nostalgia 2:33 certainly plays a part it's a warning in 2:36 a world of flattened knowledge the 2:37 coherence of personal narrative 2:38 collapses you know the data but not how 2:41 it fits together you recall the facts 2:43 but not the frame ask a modern knowledge 2:45 worker where they learned something and 2:46 you'll get a shrug or a vague gesture 2:48 toward somewhere online

I wouldn't say that source is necessarily always the most important part of the frame.

"Somewhere at university" or "in school" (where the teacher recalls university) and so on are clearly not much more informative about whether the info is reliable or not, since some university disciplines aren't all that reliable and since what one recalls from a university lecture may in fact also be "a summary of a summary". Or even more so, what you recall from school.

On the other hand, the internet can have pieces thoroughly aware of this problem and trying to do something about it. The video I just quoted may definitely be trying to do sth about it, by decrying an AI help to fact finding. Here it is:

Cognitive Hygiene: Why You Need to Make Thinking Hard Again

I am less concerned with the tendency as such (knowledge in the Middle Ages could often enough be a summary of a summary, like someone quoting "Agellius" (in fact Aulus Gellius, so "A.Gellius") and his Noctes Atticae without checking in Pliny the Elder's Naturalis Historia which in turn was not itself providing the sources, written or anecdoctically oral, that Pliny the Elder based himself on). And I'm more concerned how this helps to cementify certain cultural outlooks inimical to the faith or natural reason or the law of nature.

I comment on those, and cannot afford my own work to be just "a summary of a summary" because it's polemic, not a work of reference. To some, both the quality of polemic and the quality of really checking out how something is known dashing what amounts to magical thinking in the overconfidence in modern science, can be resumed as "inefficient and quarrelsome" ... they loathe me for it.

Now, if only some Jew or Muslim who might not be an avid student of Talmud or Hadiths himself and still less has patience for someone thinking Rabbi Akiva and Mohammed are wrong, or Maimonides and Averroes are wrong too, if that's their preference, that would be less bad. But when fellow Catholics take up the attitude, it becomes somewhat of a chore. Usually an author doesn't live off people reading his blogs for free because they hate what he has to say, and want to keep abreast of the latest in order to make their latest (secretive, behind closed doors, but available to the gate-keepers) rebuttal, but of a more sympathetic public, willing to pay for printed and bound actual books. And for most authors, this would come from fellow members of their own religion. Richard Dawkins doesn't live off New Agers. Marion Eleanor Zimmer Bradley and Margit Sandemo didn't live off people who prefer going to the Ark Encounter. Much as I regret it, Ken Ham's Ark Encounter, per se not Anti-Catholic, is not getting most visitors from Catholic parishes, who boycott it because Evangelicals, the main audience, have an anti-Catholic tendency.* Vice versa, whatever Robert Barron has to say on Catholicism, or Heschmeyer** and Horn*** (who unlike Barron need to sell books to feed their families), it's not mainly supported by Young Earth Creationists, because Heschmeyer and Horn have the unfortunate habit of defending Old Age compromise as at least possible. But also, because they are NOT Evangelicals. Heschmeyer and Horn are also not bought mainly by disciples of Tovia Singer, and his books are not the most bought by people who listen to Imran N. Hosein.

You see my point. Getting blocked from your own is costly. I could sell among Catholics if they aren't anti-Young-Earth-Creationist. I could sell among Young Earth Creationists, if they aren't anti-Catholic.

Now, Catholics can never everywhere be against Young Earth Creationists, like Christ promised to preserve His Church in His Truth (Matthew 28:16—20). Young Earth Creationists who are Protestant by default, but not fanatically anti-Catholic (not Hislop fans), will not cease to convert. A man claims to be Pope who is probably going to authorise the Marian apparitions at Lipa, in polemic against those who sit in the physical buildings of the Vatican° and arguably he is, like his predecessor, Young Earth Creationist and Geocentric. I cautiously adher to Pope Michael II. But in Paris, no priest celebrates Mass in communion with him.

I was being blocked as a writer on these topics even when I regularly did go to Mass in Paris, from 2009 to 2012. In St. Nicolas du Chardonnet. Because some people can't believe (after seing "Breakfast at Tiffany's") that someone in the Middle Ages was called Tiffany rather than Theophania (same name and the priest at Baptism would have pronounced "Theophaniam" just as in my case it was "Ioannem Georgium" in the Baptism sub conditione in 1993, but she was regularly referred to as Tiffany, in her own day), some writers of historic novels hesitate to call a Medieval character Tiffany. Similarily, what one thinks one knows about Catholic interpretation of Genesis 1 to 11 or of Joshua 10 blocks some Catholics from checking that St. Augustine, an undisputed Catholic authority was actually Young Earth Creationist (City of God, books 11 through 17, would be the go to) as well as Geocentric (De Genesi ad Litteram Libri XII, go to book I), that these positions were never condemned by a Pope who was in his lifetime viewed as Pope by all claiming to be Catholic and in some cases upheld against pioneers of the opposing theories.°°

But not only are they sloppy about the Catholic stance on these things. Their "knowledge" of the supposed "science" that opposes the traditional view and makes the modern compromise "necessary" is also not traceable to observations and first principles. Too often they are content to look at the programme of science departments giving the desideratum that knowledge of the non-obvious should make sense of actual and repeatable observations in the way that makes best sense, and conclude that Evolutionists and Heliocentrics are in fact doing that as best as anyone can in any question related to their academic fields. Never do they stop to ask the questions that scientists are or should be asking.

  • how do retrogrades prove Heliocentrism?
  • why is a residue of 25 "percent modern carbon" the actual age of two halflives, or 11,460 years?

It would be awkward to find answers like:

  • by the absence of God and angels;
  • because the Bible is wrong about the overall age of the universe, and 5000 years ago, the atmosphere was far too old to hold only some more than 43 pmC as opposed to c. 100.

But I think these are the precise tracings of this "knowledge" and as I have been into debating guys even who work on scientific institutions (on their free time on the internet, though even that has tended to get rarer), I am in a position to know it.

My own tables (on alternative Biblical or Bible compatible carbon dating) are not summaries of summaries, though unfortunately they refer to such. Saying that Göbekli Tepe's lowest layer is carbon dated to 9500 BC through ashes of char coals is a summary of a summary. My own identification of that event with "beginning of Babel" in 2607 BC is based on Babel beginning c. 350 after the Flood, when Noah died and ending in 2556 BC when Peleg was born. Doing a similar identification of Campi Flegrei with aspects of the Flood (when the fountains of the great deep were opened, by volcanism disrupting the barriers) permits me to identify carbon dated 39 000 BP or 37 000 BC with real year 2957 BC.

I analysed Mladec caves skeleta as needing reservoir effect, since 30 dead would otherwise have come too soon after the Flood, so, between Flood and Beginning of Babel, I work with two speeds. This permitted me the conjecture, so far not refuted, that in 2935 BC (22 years after the Flood) a sample then dying would have 2.583 pmC, and be dated as 33,160 BC.

And I bring back astrophysics to the questions "what do we see, what can explain it?"°°°

Vigilia sancti Jacobi Apostoli.
Tyri, apud lacum Vulsinium, in Tuscia, sanctae Christinae, Virginis et Martyris. Haec Virgo, cum patris idola aurea et argentea, in Christum credens, comminuisset atque illorum fragmina pauperibus erogasset, ejusdem patris jussu verberibus dilaniata est, aliisque suppliciis dirissime cruciata, et cum magno saxi pondere in lacum projecta, sed ab Angelo liberata; deinde, sub alio Judice, patris sui successore, acerbiora tormenta constanter pertulit; novissime, sub Juliano Praeside, post fornacem ardentem, ubi quinque diebus illaesa permansit, post serpentes virtute Christi superatos, martyrii sui cursum abscissione linguae et sagittarum infixione complevit.

* I was probably asked by an Evangelical on Quora ¿Qué creencias de los católicos se han identificado como falsas o anticristianas? ... Mexican Evangelicals tend to be more Anti-Catholic than US American ones. My response is number XV on Un poco apologética católica. ** Has six books on Amazon *** Has twelve own books on Amazon, plus a minor role in Jimmy Akin's book and exists as target of rebuttal on Amazon. °In 2015 they spoke up against Our Lady of Lipa. °° 1633 condemned Galileo as pioneering Heliocentric. 1860 a council of Cologne condemned the idea of spontaneous and continuous development of the human body (somewhat over the goal if "evolution" is inclusive of the processes that differentiate Black Africans from Asians from Europeans, but they presumably meant "from ape" and "to superman"). °°° Note, many mornings I was in homeless day shelters organised by Novus Ordo parishes and I had some kind of friendships there, even a love interest, the Novus Ordo parishes were quite as dismissive as St. Nicolas du Chardonnet. I think in both types of parish, clergy were active to block me.
